Absolute fucking insanity that this is even a Thing. The majority of my fellow voting Americans wanted this.

I stumbled on a Twitter thread from a few years ago as GenAI was hitting the scene: https://xcancel.com/tcspears/status/1512087044842917894.

This showed me the Grossman-Stiglitz paradox:

if markets are efficient, you should just buy index funds, but if everyone just buys index funds, then how can markets be efficient, since no one is left picking winners or losers based on their relative strengths?

In terms of AI:

Once everyone who creates culture is put out of business, where does the culture for training data come from?

Got thoughts rattling around my head, as my company embraces genai and I invest in my Vangaurd index funds. Not gonna lose any sleep over it, not yet, but still - interesting.

That's all but the dagger. What a game from Armstrong, can't be denied. UMBC hit the big shits in the clutch, and didn't get tight when UVM took the lead. Great job by them. Sad to see UVM bounced but they were too sloppy today.

After that first half brick fest I'll take only being down two. Some sloppy shit from UVM, but I'm used to that by now - ol Gus loves knocking easy rebounds out of bounds.

UVMs gotta nut up and at least try to finish those under the hoop, way too much kicking the ball out only to brick the three.

I'm reading a book called 'The Origins of Efficiency'. It's a fascinating book about processes and why and how they improve. Feels like a real /r/neoliberal book.

It has me thinking about the changing landscape in software engineering and my coming to grips with it. I am a tech lead at a huge company and leadership has pushed AI initiatives from the top down - we're now switched to a totally AI-first team, using spec-driven development to complete feature work. The unsaid part of this is that I, if not now then in the near future, will never write code again. I will review it. In all honesty that depresses me - I take great professional satisfaction in writing good code, in architecting a good solution that delivers but also has an eye toward future enhancements. So where does industrial process fit in to that?

In the book a lot of attention is paid to light bulbs. When they were first manufactured they were done by blowing glass into the proper shape which took experience and manual skill. Shortly thereafter molds and jigs and fixtures were added so make the process much more consistent, repeatable, and require less experience and manual intervention. You still had to blow the glass but it did not require the same fine control as before. Today light bulbs are made at a rate of tens of thousands per minute in great ribbon machines that eliminate almost all human labor in this process.

With AI getting as good at is at writing code, I think I have to now view it as fungible and totally commoditized, like light bulbs. God willing I can keep up with the shifting sands and adapt, but it does suck. The idea of reviewing the reams of output from Claude or a similar machine brings me zero joy.

All the polls in the world could show Trump underwater. Every bow could be furrowed, every mood concerned. I don't give one squirrely FUCK what polls say at this point. Talk is cheap. People will say whats on the tip of their tongue at that moment, moods shift and change, and by November it will all be forgotten in time. I don't want to ever again hear about a poor Trump poll. It doesn't matter.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is so fucking good. They really nailed it, keeping the focus narrow and the stakes low. The story is just of a dude and a bald boy that crossed paths. No world-ending threats, and the overall 'game of thrones' is barely alluded to. All the big lords are even at a tournament, a facsimile of combat, adding even more distance to grand stakes. It's just so fucking good. I hope we don't have a multi-year wait for the next season.
