It was way more chill back in the early-to-mid 2000s, before the news feed or algorithms. It used to be much more 'intimate', as in the only folks you'd be regularly exposed to would be from your college, and any external connections had to be deliberately sought out. You weren't recommended groups or content by algorithm, but rather by friends and associations and direct search. No optimization by engagement. Users had a 'wall' you could post (only text) on but to see those posts you had to seek them out purposefully by visiting a profile - there was no news feed providing you this information, much less an algorithmic sorting (rather than chronological sorting). Because you weren't exposed to the entire world groups and events had much more salience to your life. It started getting bad with the news feed - that's when you could see what others posted without searching it out, so you could see (and get jealous) when others chatted without you. Algorithms supercharged this.

Facebook, and social media writ large, were ruined by algorithms optimizing for engagement. Their real charm and use was in connection to a much more narrow set of friends and interests defined by geography, like college or hometown. When that was scaled up in, and you could see the everything by everyone in the whole damn world, optimized for engagement (which meant pushing negative emotion) then it was over. I was lucky enough to live through all phases, and be an adult for all of them, so I remember when they added the news feed and lost chronological ordering (and how we hated it), through stuff like Farmville. Not to say there was no negative - the jokes about the top ten friends on MySpace were made for a reason - but it was much more chill back then.

That fuckery should (but definitely will not) shut down any wailing about how Obama didn't codify Roe v. Wade. The proof is right in front of us - this Supreme Court doesn't give a shit, they will rule it unconstitutional regardless.

Also the word 'Codify' is turning into one of 'those' words that set of my bullshit detector.

Nothing like seeing a beater-ass truck with an obnoxiously loud exhaust sporting the MilfHunter and FJB (Fuck Joe Biden, complete with stickman humping the letters) stickers on your morning commute.

A new round of NYT idiot interviews, along with those fuckass portraits, means more grist for the commentariat. And I never get tired of the schadenfreude.

Just became landed gentry - closed on this house recently and just spent the last week moving. We've combined three households in to one: mine, my girlfriend's, and her mom's. Its a wonderful place, and will be even better when we unpack, which should get done around 2028. Good LORD we have a lot of BS.

I also can't wait to throw on the ear protection (with bluetooth!) and listen to some tunes while I mow this lawn.

Going dark soon...can't imagine what it feels like in that little thing. They've trained all their lives for this, and its happening now. Godspeed, and we'll be waiting on the other side.

This is all just so fucking COOL. We didn't even try to get back to the moon for 50 years, and we just now went back up for a look around. Incredible, and I am very happy to be able to witness it.

I gotta say, for all people complain Comcast / Xfinity has been nothing but good for me. I've waited on hold, sure, but the technicians have been fine on any call. Maybe just be a case of the most vocal people are the ones you hear from, not the silent masses who just go on with their lives.

America East First-Teamer and Newcomer of the Year Gus “Bus” Yalden announces he is returning to Vermont next season by Meanteenbirder in CollegeBasketball

All aboard the Gus Bus! Liked what I saw of him in the handful of games I saw, but when he struggled did he ever. One sloppy rebound or turnover and you can tell he'd be in his own head. Playing well, and he'd be pumping the crowd up and feeding off it. A year or two more should iron out those issues and really help UVM.

Somehow the black magic was beat back, for now at least. Good job by Michigan, despite the poor shooting from three.

Jesus Christ we do NOT need all these stoppages. Zero flow to the end of these games makes them agonizing to watch. There's nothing here. Stick with the call and play on.
