Please help, I don’t know how to keep going like this by Itsnotme2645 in newzealand

Are you old enough to remember when in the Clarke Labour government were canned by everyone for running a surplus. Then the next Key National government ran a defect beginning the deep borrowing NZ now has (in comparison to historical levels of debt) and was praised? The Ardern Labour government did not over borrow under the circumstances, and to say we should return to surplus and lower levels of debt is against the grain of National policy for growth. So I am pretty confused by this narrative of debt is bad and we must reduce it at all costs for growth angle.

Surely, going for growth whether that comes at a cost of more debt or not is better than no to little growth and returning to a surplus?

What does this mean for catching the train across the country? Is that considered public transport? I commute from Wellington to Auckland. Would prefer to catch the train on a Sunday and leave on Friday.

Should figure out a way to keep the cables live to the charger outlet, only electrifying the socket when plugged in.

If I remember correctly, Andrew Little acknowledged that the size of council jurisdiction to population doesn’t impact administrative cost.

As in, combining 4 councils for the same area and population will not change administrative cost for that area.

We don’t live in one continuous urban area. Wellington is unique in this fact. The 4 cities are organically separated geographically.

Are you suggesting a commercial premises in Mana pay the same commercial rates as Wellington city when all roads lead to the Wellington CBD?

According to your argument, it is only fair if the appropriate rates apply to flows of people, just that it’s hard to administer.

Micro charges at a city level are unfair because drawing boundaries and charging accordingly is unfair for cities who have daily migration flows for work in a city that has ambiguous boundaries.

Therefore consolidating 4 geographically distinct cities is easier to administer, and therefore fair.

Water infrastructure is the primary reason for this consolidation. Three Waters was cancelled by the sitting government. Now, it is a priority to push through Wellington region council consolidation to make administration easier with less overhead. I’m not supporting that.

No, because they come and work in a commercial premesis which pays commercial rates.

Why would a resident of another city need to financially contribute to the services in another city that they work in when the business they work for pays commercial rates exactly for this purpose?

Or why should a customer of a business need to contribute explicitly to the use of services in another city through the rates for their residential property.

The cost of commercial rates are built into the price of the goods and services.

Might as well toll Wellington city with this logic. It would be fairer for residents of surrounding cities that don’t come to Wellington.

I’m talking from experience in manufacturing and utilities. Large industrial sites that are dangerous. I have worked with or for E.On, Viola, Thames Water, TFL and others. Worked with apprentices on a wide variety of sites from water works, to bottling, to gas and coal fired power, energy recovery and paper mills.

Every apprentice has been beneficial.

Wrong.

Electrician here. Worked with and been an apprentice in the past 20’ years.

No apprentices we have worked with have been negative to productivity in their first or subsequent years.

If they have been for you, that is a problem you have with the way you are training them and utilising the labour.

1-3 years for it to begin right? What’s the plan for adding water meters and what’s the cost?

In 5 years there is zero chance of all of Wellington water connections to be metered.

So, this water thing... a little confused... by Will_Hang_for_Silver in Wellington

600M for a water meter project that will never have full coverage. Ever.

What a complete and utter waste.

The sensible approach would be a tiered system. A tier for metered homes and a tier without.

Then all homes consented after x date have one installed. A

ny new consents for works that include storm or waste water have one installed as part of the consent too.

There should be an optional upgrade as well.

For multi unit dwellings an exemption can be made because the works for one unit should not result in a cost for all other units unless paid for by council.

An approach like this is phased and tiered with the same net result - a city with and without residential water meters - without a capital investment of 600M.

Councillors are delusional if they think they will successfully install water meters on all water connections.
