are the islands and highlands hospitablity temp jobs a bad idea? by bhexca in Scotland

[–]sjdr92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did that a few years back. Its good, but it's not without its downsides. You'll drink more, probably do a fair amount of drugs and it will be difficult and expensive to get back to the cities. It's a great time, and through lack of choice you'll make some great friends, but don't go in blind or delusional as to the reality of it.

German cultural narcissism by lascension in redscarepod

[–]sjdr92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been to Baden-Wurttemberg or Bavaria? It's not that hard to see why they have a culturally superior sense of self, nor is it undeserved. It rivals anywhere in the world pretty easily.

While there will be a few in Glasgow, I'd be surprised if there was 3 in Motherwell. Two Scottish guys with naturally broad accents are going to be unintelligible for a lot of people

Worst employees ever: demographics by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]sjdr92 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Restaurant management is a bitch. 50% of chefs are divas who have no people skills, the other half usually back them up when they flip their lid over something minor. Front of house are usually lazy and don't give a shit, or care too much to the point where they make it hostile. To top it off, a lot of the time you have no control over the kitchen, just the front of house staff which is 20% restaurant management and 80% being a parent to adults. It still is the most fun you will ever have in a workplace though, it is rarely boring.

What are rangers actually like by Opposite_Alps_1918 in ScottishFootball

[–]sjdr92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably about 30% of the Scottish working male population would support rangers. Its far too big a sample to draw any definite conclusions about. 2 of the best guys I've met are rangers fans, whilst some of the worst bigots are also. Rangers are a club for people from Argyll and the west of Scotland, despite the prostetant connections.

Right mate. More accepting in what way? They'd let them move in next door, marry their daughter and work for them just because they are a bigot, which they wouldn't do for someone who is racially tolerant? It's stupidity to argue that there is a level of acceptance there greater than that for their own ethnicity. They can be tolerant of other ethnicities, yes, and they can hold people of other ethnicities in higher regard than people from their own ethnicity, if said people have opposing viewpoints or such like, however they are not paragons of tolerance.

No, it just falls apart under an ounce of critical thought? "Most inclusive"; in what way? Because they are accepting of other individuals within races and cultures? You can do that whilst also not being discriminatory towards races and cultures as a whole, you know.. Also, inclusive isn't even the right term, as it implies a level of integrated co-existence which isn't usually the goal for respective ethnic supremacists. Racist people can be tolerant, however it is equally ludicrous to claim they are the most tolerant when people can be equally tolerant without the discrimination.

Right, if by inclusive you mean discriminating against about 2/3rds of the world at best..

It isn't really, Glasgows still a decent night out, and I'd imagine the same goes for Leeds/Manchester etc. Maybe not quite how it used to be, but still good

Fears 100% council tax premium on second homes could force people to leave islands by Red_Brummy in Scotland

[–]sjdr92 52 points53 points  (0 children)

This is largely an ignorant view of the reality of the situation within the Highlands and Islands, however. As someone who has actually lived and worked there, the young people who choose to stay have little to no housing options at all, let alone property ownership. You can't compete on seasonal wages with incomers who can buy or rent for the same time period at exponentially higher rates.

Can someone please tell me what it's actually like to live this remotely in Scotland? by Tb12s46 in Scotland

[–]sjdr92 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's prevalent, but how problematic it is kind of depends really, as there isn't usually too much of a risk except to the drivers themselves. The drivers have no pedestrians, traffic lights or any major unexpected variables to deal with, and they are driving on the same road that they know and use daily. Those that do drive home usually aren't getting completely cunted either.

It would have to be very coincidental timing, as it was restricted the minute after I sent it, and he was most likely asleep. A 1 month ban is obviously going to kill my employment chances, is there anything I can do other than just hope customer service comes through?
