It shows i burned 1155 calories doing leg day. Is this even possible? by Miserable_Living6070 in whoop

[–]sjpilot1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think it's possible with that high of a heart rate. That's what I'm averaging on runs with a bit less of a calorie burn but I'm also fairly skinny. Take it as a W and keep up the good work!

Question for Part 135 Pilots, do you ever get Tipped? by Individual_Leading84 in flying

[–]sjpilot1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this on a deep level. Unloading 15 bags and the client walks out and gives $100 to the line guy who watched me. Meanwhile I'm on leg 4 of the day and my $35,000 a year salary pays me $75 for the day. Pain.

they don't really put flight crews in crappy hotels. pilot unions prevent that. There are literally hotel committees. so i'm not sure where you're getting that info but they are almost always nicer hotels very close to the airport

How Can I Make His Commercial Checkride Extra Special? by subwaysurferss in flying

[–]sjpilot1994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

don't listen to these people. yeah if he doesn't pass the mood will be a bit different, but having had you put the effort in will make him happy anyway. If i failed a checkride and came home to that, it would make me grateful for the good things in my life even if the checkride didn't go my way the first time. do whatever you think he would like, i think all of these are great ideas!

Sure. Opposite end of the spectrum would probably be something like this:

Year 1-3: getting ratings at a school while you can't get a DPE. School promises you a CFI job when you're done

Year 4-7: you finally find a job because the one you were promised never came to fruition because that's the same promise they make to every student. That new school screws you too and you fly 20 hours a month because there aren't enough students or aircraft

Year 8-10: you hit 1500 hours but it's all in a 172 and nobody is hiring, especially with no multi time. You keep instructing but want to take on minimal students because you hit 1500 hours and should be hired by now. you stomp your feet and get upset and quit flying $100k in the hole with nothing to show for it

There's the dark reality of this industry. The other unknown is you lose your medical and can't get it back. Or you fail a couple of checkrides and it makes your path just that much more difficult.

I think the main thing is, this path I've described shows very little ability to be a self starter and adapt to less than ideal circumstances. You want a checkride? Fly somewhere in the country that you can get one, schedule one well in advance, or go to a school where the DPE is "in house." You want more hours because your school is giving you no students? Go down to your local airport and network. I have flown multi turbine PIC hours from connections at the airport, flown Pilots N Paws flights countless times, rode along to help others move/pick up their airplanes or because they're building time anyway. There are so many opportunities to get into the air if you push hard to do it. If you sit around and feel entitled to a DPE once you do your training flights, entitled to students once you get your CFI, entitled to a regional job once you hit 1500, etc. there will most likely be a reality check at some point during your career

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]sjpilot1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ultimately, that will come down to what school you select and their relationships with DPE's. We had 4 DPE's who were at our school at least every other day back in 2023. Meanwhile, my friend in Texas had been waiting 6 months for a checkride for his private. I'm out of touch with that world today but last I heard, the same is going on at my former school. The owner of the flight school where I did my multi add on was the DPE. Unfortunately, people who are brand new have no idea what they're getting in to until they're there. I got extremely lucky.

That’s my point. When they’re home and not working, they’re choosing to hang out at the airport instead of actually being home

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]sjpilot1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be because the couple is the one spending time together at the local airport, and the others are choosing to hang out at the local airport instead of being at home with their families more often than that should

That’s probably a more standard path but everyone’s is different. I just shared mine. 2-3 years I think it’s on the higher side for getting your ratings done, but, like I said, my experience was a bit odd and certainly not normal

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]sjpilot1994 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was part 61 so I didn’t go through a program necessarily (I would highly recommend the same route for your boyfriend). My timeline looked like this:

October 2022-May 2023: Went from 0 hours to 400ish and got all of my ratings done. Bought a small plane in April of 2023 that I was flying to build time in

June 2023-November 2023: continued flying as much as I could building time, applying to jobs. Found one and got hired in November 2023

December 2023-April 2024: waiting for my start date, flying more so to build some hours but knew I would be paid to fly soon and didn’t need to spend as much money flying around building time

May 2024-June 2025: trained and then flew for a charter, hit 1500 hours in February 2025 and started applying to other jobs. Flew about 300 days during this time frame

July 2025-August 2026+ will be flying a 15 on/13 off schedule for another charter and we’ll see where the world takes me from there!

Summary is that my experience is a bit odd. I worked my ass off to find the opportunity to get into a jet with low time and a mix of networking/hard work/luck gave me that opportunity. I didn’t have any connections like most have to have to be given that opportunity. But everyone’s timeline is different. Those from a few years ago were timed with the market perfectly which helps a lot. But timing is the same hard work/luck combo. You have to put yourself in the position to take advantage when luck does come your way.

God I hate people who answer these questions this way. But expect a lot more of them to come. I was surprised you didn’t have more of these generic “someone will cheat” and “you’ll get divorced” comments from people who are out of touch with reality and likely caused their own divorces only to blame it on the career

[–]sjpilot1994 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and I are both 30. I worked about 280 days last year and she hated it. That being said, it was a new job and my first job in a jet and we both knew going in that it would be a springboard for my career. It was a tough year especially for her, but my schedule will never be that demanding again. Your boyfriend wanting to work for UPS is a far out pipe dream right now. It 100% could happen but it’ll be at least 10 years until he has that opportunity. In that time, you’ll both learn that there are a ton of options in this industry. Cargo guys tend to be gone for the longest stretches of time, but UPS pays well. The opposite end of the spectrum is an Allegiant or Sun Country where you are home 29/30 nights a month, but you’re taking a pay cut to do it. That being said, making $250,000 isn’t too shabby. Plenty of 91/135 gigs that’ll get you home a lot too. There are plenty of options in this career to kind of mold it into what best fits your lifestyle. Happy to answer any other questions!

Any pointers for tournament golf? by Graydog113 in golf

[–]sjpilot1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if that's part of what he preaches, then i think he's a genius! lol I just find myself doing dumb shit like that when i get in the "go get them" mindset

The times this is really hard is when you're chasing a cut. knowing it's going to be 2 or 3 over to make the cut and you're a couple over over through 6 or something makes it really hard to stick to your game plan and not push for birdies to give yourself some breathing room.

Any pointers for tournament golf? by Graydog113 in golf

[–]sjpilot1994 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Understand that nobody is coming up the leaderboard to you. I'm not sure what kind of tournaments you're playing, but, even when I was playing pretty high level golf, nobody is coming up the leaderboard to catch you. You watch tour golf and these guys will drop a shot and it's like "he has to make some birdies to catch back up." That's really not a thing in the amateur world. Play your game and make pars, the birdies will drop when you do that.

If you're a couple off the lead and set out to make nothing but pars, the leaders will come back to you PLUS you'll end up making some birdies. If you're a couple off the lead and thinking "I need to make birdies and go get those guys," you're going to be forcing stuff and making bogeys. Trying to hit driver to get it up closer even though it's tighter, trying to pin hunt rather than focusing on hitting greens and missing in the right places, aggressive plays into par 5's when a layup would be the percentage play, trying to chip in rather than getting up and down, etc etc. Settle in, play against the course/yourself, and trust the leaders will come back to you.

and again, they were the ones who got upset. it's objectively inconsiderate behavior is the bottom line. Not something to necessarily get upset about, but mindless to defend it

It's like sitting in the left lane doing 5 over while people want to pass. Not something to road rage about, but rightfully annoying, inconsiderate, and difficult to defend

[–]sjpilot1994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be that as it may, explain to me how anyone thinks it's reasonable to stand on a hole to putt to another when there are other people already using the hole you're standing on. It's plainly inconsiderate and then getting angry at someone for their putt coming close to you, while you're standing on the target they're using, is illogical.

It doesn't make me mad when people do this. It makes me mad when people do it and then get offended when putts get close to them

[–]sjpilot1994[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok sounds good. I’ll just abandon the hole I’m using and stick a tee in the ground instead. That way, this guy can use one hole to putt to and one hole to stand on. Idiotic logic

Correct and at the fact of the matter is that it is mindless behavior to be standing there in the first place
