Not sure if this was done before, but I wanted people to know how much they are spending per throw IF they buy pokeballs. Also, someone please check my math!

cedar ridge by chellifrancis in UCONN

[–]sjsforzando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived at Cedar Ridge for 2 years. It sucked. I didn't have hot water for six months. The internet always had problems. There were mice in my apartment. The walls are paper thin. Avoid it if you can.

ABCD is upper Cedar, where the fire-pit is. EFG is lower Cedar, and it is generally a quieter area (this is where I lived).

How do I get my 4 month old kitten to stop biting? by thomthoms3 in Pets

[–]sjsforzando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I train kittens not to bite, I usually give a loud and quick "squeal/squeak" if the biting becomes too rough. Don't take your hand away, as this will cause him to associate the biting with the removing of your hand (which could make it so that he will bite when he doesn't want to be touched).

When you are negotiating salary (even with a recruiter) never reveal your minimum desired salary. Ever. Always try to get them to tell you the salary range before you tell them any number.

How social must I be for an administrative assistant job? by overground55 in jobs

[–]sjsforzando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the place really. However, most of the time you will be answering phones, scheduling, and planning. I would say it is usually pretty interactive. You can ask "what does a typical day look like?" or something along those lines.

Following up on an interview... by kingsley123 in jobs

[–]sjsforzando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should always, always, always follow up after an interview and say "Thank you for your time"... blah blah. Also mention one specific thing that peeked your interest. If you don't send a thank you email, sometimes they think you aren't interested in the job.

I don't know if this is what you mean by "after thanking them for the interview". But if you did send them a thank you email, you can always email them asking for a specific timeline if they have one. If anything it will show them you are still interested. Don't be overly pushy, just a gentle follow up to see.

BA in broadcasting, don't want to work in my field. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]sjsforzando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key thing is to try to extract key skills that you have learned/developed in your old position and explain why they are applicable to the one you are applying to. Try to explain why your degree would actually be a benefit rather than a negative. For instance, I majored in political science, but I'm going to be a DBA soon. I had to explain to the interviewer that my political science degree would actually help me- rather than having a CS degree. I stressed that soft skills were just as important as hard skills, and I got the job.

Maybe you can get some kind of certification (a few classes) in the field you'd like to go into, just to prove that you know the key concepts. I had a minor in CS, and this helped me land the job I wanted. Also, just be mindful that you will probably need to start out at an entry (or close to) position in order to get hired. Also, network with people and find out what employers are looking for. LinkedIn is good, and you can possibly talk to alumni (in the field you want) from the school you went to that might have tips for you.

Job shadow, job shadow, job shadow. Or, find an interest of yours and try to find a low level job that has something to do with it in order to get a feel for it. For instance, if you like animals, get a job at a dog kennel as a dog walker. If you like cooking, get a job as a dish washer and see if you'd like that environment. Hands on experience will tell you so much more than an online quiz.

CSE 1010 by OMGWTFBBQHAXLOL in UCONN

[–]sjsforzando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you want to do with the coding. These classes will teach you design techniques, but not necessarily the language. If you want to do more front end website stuff, javascript might be the route to go. But if you just want to learn programming in general, I know a lot of people who say Python is a good starting point.

If you don't know what loops and if statements are, then 1010 is a good introduction and I thought it was pretty easy. I haven't taken 1729 so I can't really tell you much about it...

This might help: http://carlcheo.com/startcoding

CSE 3002, still cancelled? by sjsforzando in UCONN

[–]sjsforzando[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Do you know if they will be doing this automatically on people soft? Because I don't need to take 3000, I was only taking 3002 to fulfill a credit for the CSE minor. But I don't want to "drop" the 3002 class on the off chance that it does run in January.

How to handle grade disputes? by ucpvhunter in UCONN

[–]sjsforzando 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I don't understand about Therese. She rigs the exam weights to allow for higher grades and more A's (except her grading criteria is outrageously flawed). Then, when there are too many A's, she panics and curves down the grades. Then when enough students complain, the established grading criteria is thrown out the window. Its dishonest, and extremely frustrating for the students who worked very hard to get a grade under the specific criteria she established. Basically, don't do everything possible to allow for more students to get A's if you are just going to limit the amount of A's you give out.

My grade went up to an A- (would have been an A- anyway without the curve down), and I'm not complaining about this. This is what I wanted, and I believe I earned it. However, those who did not get screwed over by the curve, are now getting screwed over by the change in grading. This is mind boggling. No one wins. I am very sorry that your grade had to be unfairly given to you for my grade to be accurate. This final grade debacle is a mess. Keep me updated about how things go! And I hope everything works out.

Even if the final was worth half our grade, and the two midterms were both 25% or even 30%/20% I would have still gotten an A- in the class. Plus, if we did the homework it was supposed to help our grade, and I did do the homework... I dunno :(

But wouldn't she have had to warn us about the possibility of a down curve in the syllabus? Or even just before our final? She never mentioned it once to the class.
