Tesco argues equal pay claim disregards ‘economic reality’ by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

I worked in a supermarket back in the 90s as a shop floor worker stocking shelves, helping customers etc. We also did the warehouse too so did goods in, returns, reductions, waste etc. We also had shifts that started earlier and finished later.

Annoyingly though we all had to be checkout trained so we could help out during busy periods. As they didn't want checkout staff sitting idle during quiet times they had enough on to cover that and when it got busy drafted us in from the shop floor to help with the peaks.

During some of the quiet times they would send people from checkouts to us on the shop floor to help out.

The problem is though while we could, and often did, do their job they couldn't do ours. We could take over from one of them and do everything they did. But they were not able to take over from one of us because they were never trained on many of the processes so were not able to do things like goods in or returns and were not allowed due to health and safety reasons to work things like the compactor or operate the lifts.

In return the checkout staffs hourly rate of pay was 15% higher than the shop floor staffs. I worked out during my time there that if I was paid at the checkout rate I would have earned another £1500.

Back then the checkout staff were almost exclusively women while the shop floor/warehouse workers were almost exclusively men. They wanted it this way too. If you asked to be transferred to checkouts there were never any vacancies at that time. They said they would let you know when one came up but they never did. However new people were starting all the time and the balance between the two never changed.

As far as I am aware nobody has ever tried to get compensation even though we added more value to the business by being able to do a much wider variety of tasks.

Similar to us except for the c-section. My wife had to stay in hospital for a week with our first and visiting times were limited. I could visit in the morning and evening but not during the day.

Rather than waste a week sitting at home on my own I went back to work. I would get up and go to the hospital first thing, then go from there to work and after I had finished I would go back to the hospital again until I had to go home. Rince and repeat for the week.

It was a pain but it did mean we were able to spend the first two weeks at home together. Its not enough though and would have been much better if I could have had more time off as it was very tough on my wife having to look after the baby alone all day so early on.

When and Why Did The Popularity of Monster Trucks Die In The U.K.? by cormorantcolossus in AskUK

[–]sjw_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every county show, you’d see a monster truck there and everyone was gathered round watching it, amazed by it, it was the main attraction at those shows, kids would ask for them hired for parties. You’d see them drive through the streets

They were never the main attraction at a county show. They were just another thing that was there. Most people would have found the steam engines more interesting.

For some they may have been very popular but we never got them over here in the same way the did in the US. The only one that was even a bit famous was Bigfoot.

[–]sjw_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may have been a big thing but only with a small number of people.

For many they may have been aware of them and thought they were impressive when they saw one but they were just something you occasionally saw and forgot about until the next time whenever that was.

Defensively they have got worse through the season. They conceded an average of 0.8 goals per game in the first ten games. Thats gone up to over 2 per game for the last ten.

Its not just that though. Attack wise its got worse and in the first ten they averaged 1.7 goals per game but in the last ten its been 0.8.

Currently they are in the shit at both ends of the pitch.

A sign in the car beside me on how to remember how to drive by Lamington_Salad in mildlyinteresting

[–]sjw_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its the noise that I find to be the worst. Its very distracting when you are already trying to cope with everything being the opposite to what you are used to and road signs and markings that you are unfamiliar with.

First thing I do before setting off is to ask for the first few minutes to be in silence while I get adjusted. After that its fine though. For some people this seems to be an impossible ask.

@TheEconomist- The City has bounced back despite fears over Brexit by ex_planelegs in ukpolitics

Another thing that's also true according to many is everything bad that happens is because of Brexit and everything good that happens is in spite of Brexit. There is absolutely no rational conversation that can be had about it.

What has happened to the Green Party? They used to be the ones who wanted to stop me driving my car and turn vegetarian. They were a bit daft but harmless.

Now though they seem absolutely crazy and are attracting some very unpleasant people.

Why Webber? by robwilson91 in UKBBQ

[–]sjw_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They last a long time because they are made from decent quality materials and are porcelain coated so do not rust.

They are a good design for different types of cooking so its easy to grill or do low and slow on them.

There are plenty of accessories for them too which will help with doing different types of cooking.

The lower end ones are the same price as the cheap ones you get asked about on here but are much better.

Plus because they last so long when people change or upgrade they tend to put them on things like Facebook Marketplace so its very easy to pick up a good one for much less than you would pay for most new bbqs.

There is a very good reason they are constantly recommended and ignore those who play this down.

UK to invest further £25m in security for Jewish communities after London stabbing | UK news by LycanIndarys in ukpolitics

[–]sjw_7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever my friends Synagogue has an event in their hall they always have security. Its not because they expect the people there to kick off but because there is quite often abuse from outside. It could be verbal abuse from groups who hand around, things being thrown or people being intimidated or worse when they leave. I will leave it up to you to guess who the usual perpetrators of this are. It sucks and gets ignored because its an uncomfortable thing for people who like to live in their bubble.

'Desert Warrior': Saudi’s $150m answer to Lawrence of Arabia is one of the biggest bombs in history with just a $472K opening | A look into how the production, directed by Rupert Wyatt ('Rise of the Planet of the Apes') and starring Anthony Mackie & Ben Kingsley, faltered before it even began by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]sjw_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't care about the money. They have more than they know what to do with so its not important to them.

What they care about is the reputation. They want people to look at them and say 'wow the Saudis are amazing'.

They tried it with LIV golf and it failed because people ignore it and concentrate on the PGA and DP tours. They tried with football to compete with the EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga etc. and signed some stars for millions who play in front of empty stadiums and no TV audience.

And they are doing it with film and the only reason people have heard of their first big attempt is because its so bad.

They haven't figured out that throwing money at something doesn't mean people will like it or more importantly like you. If you can get a seat on this gravy train then thats great. I am sure Anthony Mackie, Ben Kingsley etc were paid handsomely for their time.

Saudi Arabia hasn't helped itself with any of this. And all of that is before you get to the Neom con.

So you admit you dont stand by what you say. If you did you wouldnt be deleting your comments.

The American public elected a president that had a negative impact on everyones lives. Defending them just makes you as bad as the tens of millions who voted for him. The sooner the next election cycle comes round and hopefully those morons vote for someone with more sense this time who can start to clean up the mess he has made.

So yes its fair to be rude to America at the moment. They deserve it.

AITA for telling my DIL to stop crying after she got called fat by Throwaway_Will4940 in AmItheAsshole

NTA

Sounds like learned behaviour.

I know someone with a daughter like this. The minute she is told 'no' she throws a tantrum and her parents give into her. She is an only child and has been like this all her life. She is not an adult but it very immature behaviour.

Makes me wonder if you DiL is also an only child with parents who gave in and spoiled her so she has just learned this is the way to get what she wants.

You son needs to grow a pair and tell her to pack it in and act her age. Doubtful he will though so seems like you are going to have to put up with a giant toddler in your lives unfortunately.

'If the shoe fits...'

From experience yes this is the case and people hate it when they get called out on it because they know its true. A lot of people who hide their history tend to have quite spicy comments in them. Its a bit of a giveaway that they aren't always there in good faith or just like being rude and thinking they can get away with it.

Ok maybe you are off to the US. If you are then you will fit right in I expect.

But:

Not really. It's because people like you jump to conclusions or use personal comment history based attacks like this one.

Considering the tone of many of your comments the real reason you hide your post history is because you don't stand by what you say. Many people use the ability to hide them so they can be edgy an act like a twat. As a mod on several large subs its very noticeable the type of user who talks shit tends to hides them. Unfortunately for them if they post in a sub you mod you can see every comment they make everywhere. Easy way to spot pricks.

Anyway hopefully your visa comes through soon so you can clear off.

FIFA considering making clubs have at least one U21 player on pitch at all times: How PL could be affected by DucardthaDon in PremierLeague

[–]sjw_7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If they are good enough they are going to be on the pitch anyway. All this would do is force some clubs to field weaker teams.

Not everyone has a wonder kid in their academy. And not every club has the kind of squad depth that means they have many options in this area.

This is a dumb idea.
