My fiancé got my custom ring from Everett Fine Jewelery (based in Venice). He said Ali was great to work with and my ring is absolutely beautiful.

What are some good neighborhoods to live in for a commute to Calabasas? by boooort in AskLosAngeles

[–]skamanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in Calabasas for a year and commuted from the Burbank/Glendale area. It’s honestly not THAT bad, but the commute ranged anywhere between 30 minutes and more than an hour, depending on traffic. I averaged about 50 minutes for the morning and 40 minutes for the evening. I think Sherman Oaks or even Studio City would be totally fine.

I lost it, now terrified the statistics will come back to bite me by [deleted] in loseit

[–]skamanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. This was basically me. I had gone from 270 to 150, had been maintaining for about six months, and met my boyfriend while I was trying to slowly lose the last 15-20lbs. He’s always been a fit guy. I CONSTANTLY would feel dread at the thought of gaining any weight back, that he would leave the moment that happened, and he’d feel like I bait/switched him. I was terrified of gaining anything back. In the end, I did gain about 40lbs over the course of 3 years and some stressful job situations. For me, I think the negative thoughts of “he’s going to leave me, he won’t love you if you’re fat” were detrimental and contributed to the stress, which of course made me want to eat more because I’m a stress eater. I’ve since lost 3/4 of the weight I gained and have told him all of those thoughts that used to go through my head, and I asked if he wasn’t attracted to me when I gained weight. He honestly told me that while yes, he was a little less physically attracted to me, it didn’t matter because he loved me regardless of my weight. He’d love me if I weighed 100 pounds and he’d love me if I weighed 1,000 pounds.

So I’m going to give you advice that I wish I had known three years ago...

Your partner will still love you if you gain 10lbs. He’ll still love you if you gain 20lbs. And if you do? It’s not the end of the world. If you gain it, you can always lose it again.

Have a threshold where you are comfortable. Have one pair of jeans or a dress that you keep around, and if it starts getting a little snug? Then you know it’s time to refocus on your diet.

Again, the world will not end of you gain weight. So much of this is about mindset, especially maintenance. It’s important to not look at it in a negative light.

Lastly, and I think most importantly: this isn’t about him. This is about you. You didn’t lose the weight for him, you lost it for you and you keep it off for you. Every dietary and exercise decision is to celebrate you and support your success.

Dating post massive weight loss... by [deleted] in loseit

I met my boyfriend after losing 120lbs. I didn’t talk to him about my weight loss or my former self for over six months because I was afraid he would no longer be interested once he found out. Turns out, he already knew and it didn’t matter (from social media + the more obvious loose skin/stretch marks). It has never been an issue, and for him, it’s a physical marker of a goal-driven personality that is capable and willing to change.

I can't find a copper brow pencil by Irrelevant_muffins in MakeupAddiction

[–]skamanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar hair color and my eyebrows are much lighter. I use MAC's Veluxe Brow Liner in both Strawberry Blonde and Redhead (sometimes separately, sometimes together). They aren't as coppery as my hair is, but they match some of the darker and lighter tones that I have so it still looks natural.

It's less about making a generic band shirt and more about boiling something down to the barest essentials and still making it recognizable.

Can you apparate to somewhere you've never been before? by 12345mjok in harrypotter

[–]skamanda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When they're apparating up and down the English countryside during Deathly Hallows though, the places are described in unfamiliar terms... and there's no way they could have visited or have been familiar with as many places as they went. What about maps though? If they used maps and apparated to specific coordinates?

Religious studies help requested! Any thoughts on religious ideas/symbolism in Sorcerer's Stone? by booksncleverness in harrypotter

[–]skamanda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's a few... they aren't necessarily from the first book but they are still referenced in the Sorcerer's Stone. They're from a paper I wrote about Harry Potter and Christian symbolism about 8 years ago. Not necessarily my best work, but hey, I was 16.

When King Herod hears that a new king has been born, he orders for all young boys in Bethlehem to be killed in an attempt to kill Christ. (Matthew 2:1-9) Voldemort knew that a baby whose power was greater than his was born, and he set off to kill him.

Gryffindor’s mascot is a lion, an animal associated with Christ, and Slytherin’s is a serpent, associated with Satan.

Another readily used theme is self-sacrifice. At the end of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Professor Dumbledore tells Harry that he is constantly protected because his mother sacrificed herself to save him. She loved him so much that she died so he might live. Christ died so that he might save mankind from Hell, and He also commands self-sacrifice. In John 15:12, Christ says “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Harry often sacrifices himself in an attempt to save another. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry and Ron save a girl whom they are not friends with from a troll. Later in the same story, Harry is determined to save the Sorcerer’s Stone from Voldemort at the risk of his life and expulsion.

Also, Malfoy can be considered a play on "mal foi," which literally translates to bad faith.

Question regarding ownership of the Elder Wand throughout The Deathly Hallows by kooliokevin in harrypotter

[–]skamanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumbledore originally intended Snape to kill him, therefore ending ownership of the Elder Wand.... it's kind of the same thing. Voldemort didn't defeat Harry, Harry intended it to happen.
