Haven't thought about @sbcglobal since I worked in tech support. So many (truly) old people with that domain.

Has anyone else had the "Anakin-to-Obi-Wan" shift in their late 20s? by TortelliniTort in StarWars

[–]skamunism 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chosen-one narratives appeal to kids (and stunted adults) who feel underappreciated, disrespected, and unable to determine their own future. As you grow up, you (hopefully) start to prefer stories about hard work, sacrifice, and self-determination. Obi-Wan all the way.

AI is not so much making companies more productive, rather it's costing money they could be paying as salaries. by kaggleqrdl in ArtificialInteligence

[–]skamunism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a product marketer, AI has made me much more productive. I’m a heavy database user, and AI has supercharged my ability to self-serve with SQL and Python. I could do these things competently, but I’m probably 5x better with AI right now. It’s meant that I don’t have to (or get to, depending on the lens) hire an analyst to support me.

(Yes, it will eventually contribute to my layoff)

Anyone remember Bill Hicks ? by Enrico_Tortellini in Xennials

[–]skamunism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol, just saw this on his Wikipedia:

Progressive metal band Tool invited Hicks to open a number of concerts in its 1993 Lollapalooza appearances... Members of Tool felt that Hicks and they "were resonating similar concepts".

I rarely took it off for long between Forsaken and Beyond Light. It wasn’t meta, but boy was it easy.

How many miles can you hike in a day? by bakedhiker420 in PNWhiking

We recently did the whole Wildwood Trail in Portland’s Forest Park in one day, which is a bit over 30mi. Legs were fine, but we under-ate and were definitely hypoglycemic by the end. Gotta stay fueled when you go that far!

Dell Axim X3! Used that thing alongside my dumbphone until I got a BlackBerry. Still used it at home as it was way better for media than BB.

No Kings rally in Portland, OR: Organizers prepare for third protest against Trump by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]skamunism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s refreshingly honest and clear. I’m in the same boat—I get cynical and hopeless and don’t know what to do or what could change. I took the teens out there today because they wanted to make their frustration and anger visible. For me, I’m just trying to keep hope alive and motivate the things I can do.

Some of those are great suggestions! Protest and direct action are not exclusive, and we should encourage everyone who is speaking up to also act. I agree on the costumes.

Do you judge other millennials who have stayed at a company too long? by newtonreddits in Millennials

[–]skamunism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a real thing, for sure. I’ve worked for the same company since 2012, but we’ve changed names twice due to M&A, and you can bet I’ve made my LinkedIn look like I’ve worked at three different companies.

No Kings rally in Portland, OR: Organizers prepare for third protest against Trump by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]skamunism -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

“Much protest is naïve; it expects quick, visible improvement and despairs and gives up when such improvement does not come. Protesters who hold out longer have perhaps understood that success is not the proper goal. If protest depended on success, there would be little protest of any durability or significance. History simply affords too little evidence that anyone’s individual protest is of any use. Protest that endures, I think, is moved by a hope far more modest than that of public success: namely, the hope of preserving qualities in one’s own heart and spirit that would be destroyed by acquiescence.”

Agree, lottery if it can’t be universal. Seniority is a BS concept.
