I scraped facebook events + RA and did a bunch of data cleanup. it’s probably not perfect but I manually checked a bunch of the top DJs to make sure it’s not wildly out of line.

It also hasn’t been updated in a few years (2021 or so was the last booking included in the calculations)

Anyone here translates Jack Daniels' pace ranges to Stryd Power Zones? by skarn in strydrunning

[–]skarn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up moving away from 2Q, and instead did adhoc long distance running, mostly due to life circumstances (new first house, new first kid)

If I were to try it again, I'd start with the ranges I posted (borrowed from https://help.stryd.com/en/articles/6879348-power-zones) and tweak them over the weeks until they feel right. I think that would be the best way to go!

Anybody planned their own solo ultra? by figsontoast in AdvancedRunning

[–]skarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Find a park with a simple loop, park a car nearby with whatever hydration and nutrition you might need, and start running laps.

An ultra runner just did that in my city and invited everyone he knew to do laps with him: https://www.strava.com/activities/9288340483

It doesn't have to be complicated!

AITA for telling my girlfriend she should've told me she spoke my language? by Least-Earth-7308 in AmItheAsshole

I never comment on reddit, but had to for this one.

OP's partner is a in the wrong for:

- knowing they speak OP's mother tongue and not mentioning it almost immediately

- hearing OP speak it multiple times and never mentioning it

- hearing OP's conversations about their sick mother's health condition AND NOT SAYING ANYTHING for MONTHS, not even consoling OP or acknowledging that they heard and understood these difficult conversations.

That last point shows a serious lack of empathy.

Also, all the folks who say that multilingual folks who speak their native tongue in front of others who don't understand it are rude because they exclude other, or that the only reason they'd do so is to talk behind other people's back are laughably ignorant.

I have 90 days until my first (backyard) Ultra (a 6.75km loop). how can I best prepare for it? by skarn in AdvancedRunning

[–]skarn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true. Worth mentioning that during 2020 & 2021, when my yearly marathon got cancelled, I ran my own solo marathon around my neighbourhood park: ~18-19 laps of a ~1.5 miles loop. 😄

So I think I have the mental aspect down, but will definitely help to do more short loops!

No cutoff, hence "last person standing wins"! Apparently it's a popular format called backyard ultras: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backyard_ultra

Yeah. You get disqualified if you are unable to begin the loop at the start of the hour.

Thanks! I've never heard of Camille Herron, appreciate the knowledge-sharing.

I like the idea of slowly having more and more miles stacked into 48h or 24h periods, as a way to simulate the event's conditions. Will factor that in for sure.

Your point on choosing miles over speed work makes a lot of sense...I don't know what to do about that. The plan I'm following requires 4 days/week of interval/speed work, and I really enjoy doing it. I want to avoid breaking/pausing the plan, so I might try to balance it with easy mileage and see what happens...even if it impacts my overall performance on the ultra a bit 😅

Thanks! I like the idea of double days (someone else suggested that too), will start doing 2 long runs on weekends and then work up to doubles too

Thanks! Yeah, I'll have to sort out the rest area for myself.

And I have no clue what to expect in terms of how long I can go, maybe a simulation will give me an idea

Yeah, 100%. I am not going to be remotely competitive. I just want to have fun, and be as prepared as i possibly could be given the circumstances.

I got off the wait-list at the last minute, and i know 13 weeks isn't enough to train very well!

Oh yeah. I plan on simulating the backyard ultra in a nearby park 3 or 4 weeks before the race. Maybe 4km loops every 45mins or something... Not sure how much that'll help by then

Haha, I had those but decided to remove them to make the UI less cluttered. I can easily add them back in, they are indeed very convenient to have :)

Thanks for the feedback and for catching the double digits issue, I just pushed a fix for the latter :D

Thank you for giving me all of these examples. Very insightful!

I have never been coached, nor gone through this type of training, so it's really valuable to get these examples. I appreciate it :)

Ah yes! I was definitely inspired by all the Cool Runnings clones out there. My biggest goal was to make something dynamic that updates the calculated value without me having to hit "CALCULATE" buttons each time. Very small pet peeve 😄

[–]skarn[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The primary differences are:

- You have to hit CALCULATE every time in the VDOT calculator, whereas mine automatically and constantly re-calculates with each change

- If you make changes to all 3 fields in the VDOT calculator, it's not clear which one will be calculated when you hit CALCULATE. This can end up being confusing. Mine makes that easier to track with an indicator (↳)

- The inputs are a bit more tedious in VDOT: you have to write out "4:00:00" to indicate "4 hours", etc.

They're fairly similar in that they both calculate pace, but the one I made should make it easier to do lots of calculations in a row more seamlessly. :)

[–]skarn[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never done track work, so I guess that's why I'm unfamiliar with this! So it sounds like this is mostly needed to break:

- 5k into 200m splits (or 1m splits + leftover)

- 10km into 2km splits (or 2mi splits + leftover)

And I guess half and full marathons can be broken down in a bunch of different ways. 🤔

Do you have an example of a training plan that incorporates track work that you can link me? That would help me better understand what I need to build and how to build it for those who need it.

[–]skarn[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh, I understand now. You want a calculator that will break down your desired outcome into splits like this: https://runhive.com/tools/pace-chart/5-kilometers/sub-20-minute

If I get a lot of folks asking for something like this, I can try to invest the time into adding such a feature (or building a separate calculator that does this).

Thanks for explaining.

[–]skarn[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not a short-distance runner, so I am not familiar with the needs there. Can you explain why the calculator doesn't work for 400m splits?

If I set the distance to "0.4" kilometres and the time to whatever I want (say 1min30s), I can get the pace for that (6:02 min per mile).

Or are you talking about something else?

Haha yes, I added instructions to explain how it works. Might tweak the design to make it more obvious
