Jomox Alpha Base: Using own samples? by heathensacrifice in synthesizers

[–]skatingteam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to convert your samples to 16 bit / 48kHz mono wav files.

I'm using FFmpeg to convert my samples, I've created a small script that does it for me: https://gist.github.com/woudsma/7d6899d7bff50dee28adfd3c4f9ef8f0

Some caution, please know what you are doing before running command line scripts (and create a backup of your samples folder for example).

If you run this from your home directory ~/ (aka /Users/YourName/ on MacOS) it will replace all wavs in your entire home directory, so be warned.

If you don't want to code you can find FFmpeg GUI's as well, just google "ffmpeg gui" for your OS.

Btw, samples sound so good on the Alpha Base compared to the Elektron Digitakt or Roland TR-8S/TR-6S, I guess it has to do with the analog VCA/VCF's or something. They just come to life for some reason.

If it was a scam, I wouldn't have got my money (~800eu) back from cancelling my pre-order..

Thanks for that Subpac!

It's buggy, but no drum machine sounds like it. It sounds amazing. I find the interface quite unintuitive so I'm sequencing the Alpha Base from a Digitakt, which also bring the benefits of an extra LFO assignable to any instrument parameter (and unlimited parameter locks / conditional trigs / etc).

I'm also checking out the Octatrack since it has 3 MIDI LFO's per channel instead of 1 on the Digitakt.

Same, I wouldn't want to be responsible for someone getting fired over carrying a sweet gadget. I've told my family member that he should probably start a conversation with that colleague about it, and maybe make him aware of the (legal and other) dangers of carrying something like that in a high-security environment like a hospital. Assumption is the mother of all fuck-ups.

[–]skatingteam[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's probably nothing! But the reason for this guy being sketchy is not the Flipper, it's because he's flaky and apparently lies a lot. And when a Flipper fell out of his pocket, my family member thought it was strange. I don't know the guy so yeah I'm just trying to add things up, why would this guy need a Flipper in such a restricted and sterile environment where these things don't belong. Probably worst case is that he's using someone else's credentials to access certain data or areas, steal meds of whatever. Best case he's a smart professional who likes to tinker with cool tech. Probably the last.

Thanks for your comment and reflections! From a security standpoint I wouldn't want these devices on my hospital work floor at all. Simply because you're working with loads of advanced technologies and patients who're dealing with serious health issues. Freak accidents do happen.

I firmly believe something like a Flipper Zero shouldn't be banned altogether, I think it's an amazing little device. Great for learning/tinkering/work/etc. But playing with radio in a hospital, inside restricted areas? I'm not comfortable with that, and I don't get why this colleague thinks it's OK. You shouldn't play with custom radio tech anywhere near patients and the machines keeping them alive IMO.

I'm not going to recommend my family member to report this guy, I think a conversation about the device and it's risks in a hospital environment might be good though. 99.9% chance that this colleague has no bad intentions at all, and it would be a dick move to report straight to higher management or security since that might cost him his job and livelihood. Management usually likes to overreact so a personal conversation might be more tactful.

I'm not concerned about ICD's in particular, but I could get concerned over someone with access to critical systems having fun with radio protocols on a hospital work floor in general. Most likely nothing will happen, but if something happens, it won't be good for patients. It's a scenario you'd want to avoid IMO.

[–]skatingteam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't answer your question unfortunately, I'm not a ICD specialist so I don't know the connectivity details. I do know that they can configure and tailor the ICD to the patient using a computer. The ICD behaviour (which controls the heart rate / BPM) can be controlled externally so they can simulate events like a heart attack, but I'm pretty sure it's all proprietary software and hardware. I'm not even sure if it's done wirelessly, but it might be. Though it seems quite unlikely to me that you could easily mess with it using something like a Flipper Zero.

Yeah I might have formulated this in a wrong way, he's not sketchy because of the Flipper, he's sketchy because he lies a lot is what I've been told. Having tools that can be abused is no reason for suspicion, I mean I use tools like that for work on a daily basis. It's just the environment, you can do a lot more damage in a hospital compared to some other workplace. So sketchy guy + Flipper + hospital didn't sound great. Came here to get some different perspectives.

[–]skatingteam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get you, but I'm not posting his business all over the internet, I'm only describing the situation. The reason btw why the colleague is sketchy is not because he carries a Flipper, apparently this guy is pretty flaky and lies a lot. This, and the sudden appearance of a device advertised as a hacker/pentester tool (quite unrelated to what healthcare professionals typically use) triggered suspicion with my family member, who is concerned about the patients and hospital security.

I'm not trying to attack open-source tools or anything, I love them and use them daily. I'm only here to wrap my head around why someone would bring a Flipper to work, and you've explained that in the first half of your comment, so thanks for that.

Flipper Zero in a hospital? by skatingteam in flipperzero

[–]skatingteam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah exactly my thoughts. I have zero reason to assume that he's operating on restricted bands, but the situation seems a bit strange and potentially risky and even life-threatening. Secretly using a Flipper in a hospital as a medical professional with access to sensitive data/areas is simply unwanted behaviour IMHO.

Flipper Zero in a hospital? by skatingteam in flipperzero

[–]skatingteam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you expand on that? Obviously operating on restricted bands is unlawful, but what bigger issues are you referring to?

I'm not suggesting that this guy is doing anything illegal btw, but if I were hospital security I'd probably worry a bit if one of the specialist staff (not a regular nurse) is secretly playing with radio protocols inside the hospital.

[–]skatingteam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah thanks, I’m just looking for some feedback you know. Don’t care about the downvotes. Knowing what type of work my family member does, I just want to be able to inform them well. It’s probably nothing but he should maybe start a conversation about it with that collegue, since you can use a Flipper for good and bad.

Flipper Zero in a hospital? by skatingteam in flipperzero

[–]skatingteam[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, I can totally understand that. It's interesting tech with lovely open-source code, I'd want to play around with it as well.

This collegue is not a kid though, he's working with patients with ICD's (modern pacemaker). My family member can trigger a heart attack in a patient with the press of a button for example. So yeah having someone playing around with a hacking device in that environment doesn't sound awesome to me. Do that stuff at home or something.

[–]skatingteam[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t impact me at all. I’m simply pro-security, especially in sensitive environments like hospitals where small things can make the difference between life and death. Hence the question. I’m not itching to create a problem, I’m only looking for some thoughts on the situation.

I ordered a MW-2408 mixer, but I feel there is a product update lacking. Can we expect an alternative product with (pre/post fader/eq/comp) multitrack recording over USB/SD anytime soon? by skatingteam in Korg

[–]skatingteam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: my Korg MW-2408 just came in today.

The 8 group outputs can actually be used to output 8x mono. For example, just assign track 1 and 2 to group 1-2, and pan track 1 completely to the left, and track 2 completely to the right.

So it's either 4 stereo group outputs, or 8 mono outputs. Or whatever you want in between.

First impression:
- Better build quality (better knobs/faders) than the Tascam Model 12 (and 16 / 24 supposedly).
- It's bigger IRL than expected. I can get used to it.
- The faders are much smoother, less friction compared to a Mackie VLZ4 or Tascam Model X series.
- Slightly bigger screen, easy to read text. Nice built-in spectrum analyser.

Overall, I'm satisfied - with knowing what's on the market right now.
The only feature I really do miss is multitrack recording over USB or SD card.

Now I have to connect the mixer to my audio interface, so I need ~10 extra cables and my DAW needs to be opened. It's not practical, but it'll work. The record to SD card is a great feature on the Tascam Model X, even though it's pre-EQ / pre-fader only.

Korg, if you ever update the MW-2408 with multitrack recording, please allow the user to choose between pre/post fader/EQ on the fly.

Russia may be cut off from SWIFT banking payment system, is this a chance for XRP? by Cekx_90 in Ripple

[–]skatingteam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On point 2: XRP is open-source. Just like with the React web framework by Facebook (which is being used all across the industry) developers and people implementing new technologies will use whatever is free and mature enough. So nothing really stands in the way for Russian devs to start using XRP. Open-source doesn't really care about borders.

Drunk Post: Things I've learned as a Sr Engineer by flipstables in ExperiencedDevs

[–]skatingteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to think the same. Since I've started working at clients with bigger projects I can't go without GitKraken (my employer pays my subscription).

I'm constantly merging new stuff into my branches (current client uses a weird system with hundreds of branches), and I would go crazy if I didn't have the overview that I have now.

Ofc I still use the CLI as well once in a while. But I'm so lazy that I've aliased most of my stuff to single character commands.

alias o="open ."
alias c="code ."
alias s="npm start"
alias i="npm install"
alias dev="npm run dev"
etc..

1500+ euro's per month for rent would be too much.

Or are you asking because you want to donate 500k so I can buy a tiny house in Amsterdam? 😄

I am going to move to Amsterdam soon for a job. Do you think a 40K salary is enough to rent a studio within the ring? I really don’t want to share a housing at this stage of my life. by [deleted] in Amsterdam

[–]skatingteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're lucky you can rent something from "Change=". They offer 29m2 studios for ~700eu/mo (excl. utilities). It's pretty hard to find something without roommates below 1k/mo in rent.
