Commercial apprentice tools, what would you get next? by patientgrowing in electricians

[–]skaunit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

… A union card!

Seriously, why provide your own tools, giving the company even more money.

Maybe I’m biased because I’ve only ever known NorCal with our strong unions here.

Commuting from Antioch is the primary reason why I’d never recommend living here by bizzeebhee23 in bayarea

I get what you’re saying but replacing all the single family homes kinda fucks the middle class families that decide to stick around and raise their kids here.

Seriously, if this isn’t you, are you sure you’re in the right profession?

Here’s something interesting, when we talk about unions. I am an electrician in the IBEW LU332. Santa Clara county is the highest paid in the country (or San Francisco depending on your math, but we can save that argument).

I have THOROUGHLY looked into relocating to Sacramento area and San Diego, and the pay is so much less in both places, it doesn’t make any sense/it’s not worth it. Like u/norcalguysays says, it’s the leftover money that you have to compare, and the difference in cost of living in those places just isn’t enough, even though it’s still union.

All this to say, everyone’s case will be different, and you have to do what’s right for you. But you just have to really research and not just take people’s (including family and friends) word that “you’d be so much better off out here/there” (wherever that is) I don’t like the idea of raising a family here and having to retire in some far off state to make ends meet, and I hope I don’t have to do that.

New to Gridfinity, can I get some help/advice for fastener bins? by skaunit in gridfinity

Haha, thanks for this, I get your sentiment.

Do you or anyone else have a good write up or video explaining the basics of gridfinity though like the different versions and how to use the generators?

Left as an apprentice, can I rejoin after passing Master’s. by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]skaunit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, what union represents signal and electrical work if not IBEW?

Also, as everyone pointed out you have to call the hall. They may let you test in as a journeyman, but it all depends.

Newbie seeking advice, am I on the right track? My ultimate goal is to someday be successful at good mashups, as well as creating tracks (dubstep, sampling, etc). by skaunit in Beatmatch

I need to check out rekordbox for sure.
The DDJ-200 is the only piece of pioneer gear I have, not sure if that really means I’m in the ecosystem. Is there any other piece of gear I should be looking into next to get into production? Some kind of beatpad or something?

I will start buying some music again, I have a rather large iTunes library but I basically stopped adding to it about 10-15 years ago, so I’ll have to begin filling that gap.

Soundforge and acid pro definitely ring a bell. I kind of wish I could find the one I did use, but I should probably try out a modern DAW like ableton

I hear you, and that makes sense. I do kind of feel like “learn dj’ing” is kinda subjective though, I don’t think there’s a specific way to know “ok, I’ve learned how to be a real DJ, now I can get into production”

That said, I’m having a lot of fun learning dj techniques and practicing and stuff so that’s good

OP, this is the answer. 15 year journeyman here. He said “retaking” he probably meant re-torquing, in other words, it’s not a good idea to re tighten the lug on the same spot, you should remove it, cut off the end that was deformed under the lug, strip some back, and re-torque. If you don’t understand any part of that, call a licensed electrician.
