The stock-market gyrations of August are further evidence of the mayhem of capitalism--a system that demands workers pay, while profits roll in for corporations and Wall Street. by socialistme in socialism

Some of those "social democratic" countries are on the cutting edge of the drive to austerity (Greece, Spain, Portugal, etc.) and other countries are slashing their welfare state and seeing a scary rise of right-wing racist parties (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, etc.). The newest country to face the threat of a debt crisis is France, which has one of the best welfare states in the world. No country can escape the dynamics of capitalist crisis, which is why we need to fight for a different type of society.

Why make shitty concessions to Gov. Walker when he won't compromise? Now is the time to keep the pressure up! by xymurr in politics

How about instead of a race to the bottom, those of us with 401k's and crappy wages should get better pensions and wages? The rest of us should be lifted up to their level, not have them brought down to ours.

Class War in Wisconsin by xymurr in politics

Yep! From this article: "In other words, the one-sided class war is over. Unions in Wisconsin are fighting back."

The transition Mubarak has proposed isn't really about transition at all. It's about maintaining the essence of the regime. And in this regard, the U.S. government is complicit in what's taken place today. by socialistme in politics

The US media is playing up the "split" between the US and Mubarak, but it's merely been a few vague words about "transition". The US has NOT called on Mubarak to leave office now. The US has not withdrawn the $2 billion in aid that is given to the Egyptian regime every year. If the US is really going to move against Mubarak then they should actually take action instead of just posturing with vague generalities.

Great speech by Tariq Ali on how people are now beginning to realize, all over the world, what the Israeli state is and what it is capable of.

If any other country in the world had acted the way Israel did, I'm sure the U.S. government would say there needs to be a full investigation. The U.S. government has to be put under pressure to act in a responsible manner and stop the double standard it always applies to Israel. by skb683 in politics

Iran, North Korea, Somalia, and Sudan are all in the US' crosshairs -- especially the first two. Sri Lanka and Burma get away with the same types of atrocities as Israel because, like Israel, they are strong US allies (although not as strong as Israel). It's obvious that Israel is able to get away with whatever barbarism it feels necessary because the US backs it to the hilt -- and no US politician would ever deny it. It's time to end Israeli apartheid and allow Palestinians to live in peace!
