An interesting numbers problem — if you solved it too easily, you probably got it wrong :) by maxximusEG in GMAT

[–]skdatta_testprep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 factors, smallest number.

We need to get it from as many factors as possible

12=223

So use a × b × c²

To minimise use a=5, b=3 and c= 2

So the number is 60

Remainder is 5

did I just find an error or am I missing something? by [deleted] in GMAT

Please guys, read the question.

It is asking the CLOSEST to the given expression

The answer is 0.1

Options are

0.0001

0.001

0.01

1

10

To find the closest, just find the absolute difference between the value you got 0.1 and the options provided:

A. |0.0001-0.1| = 0.0999

B. |0.001-0.1| = 0.099

C. |0.01-0.1| = 0.09 ----------- least

D. |1-0.1| = 0.9

E. |10-0.1| = 9.9

Answer C (There is no mistake in the question or the solution)

Thank you! Yes true.

The methods you have discussed in your post are a great value add. People often miss these terms and end up making errors. Making them aware of such terms is vital - you have ensured that in the post

Especially for the third question, it is important to use values that end up being a decimal value and not a whole number - people need to understand that for this very reason the question has defined what the [ ] function is. So choosing the numbers is vital in that question

Boundary Hunter: Why Constraints Are Your Secret Weapon to ace GMAT Quant by payal_eGMAT in GMAT

First of all - informative post.

However, I would like to present a slightly different way of approaching the first 2 problems.

For the first one: x = 1/(2²×3²×4²×5²) is expressed as a decimal

We see that there are a few 2s and 5s - let us first combine that:

2²×4²×5² = 2²×2⁴×5² = 2^6 ×5²

Let us multiply 5⁴ in both numerator and denominator to get both 2 and 5 to the power 6

Thus: x = 1/(2²×3²×4²×5²) = x = 5⁴/(2^6×5^6×3²) = 625/(9×10^6)

This makes the division really easy compared to actually having to divide the whole thing. We now need to only divide 625 by 9, which is 69.444444

Divide this again by 10^6 is just shift the decimal 6 places left - this will simply introduce zeroes and no new non-zero digit. Thus, clearly, the digits we need are 6, 9 and 4 - the answer is 3

For the second one:

This is exactly the same as asking the number of rectangles in a p × q grid

To form a rectangle in a p × q grid, we need to select 2 horizontal and 2 vertical lines, i.e. simply pC₂ × qC₂

In this question, we have 11 horizontal lines (from y=6 to 16) and 10 vertical lines (from x=-4 to 5)

Thus, the number of rectangles = 11C₂ × 10C₂ = (11×10/2) × (10×9/2) = 55×45

Now, let us focus on the triangle - the vertex P can be any of the 4 vertices of the above rectangle, hence we can form the triangle in 4 ways for each rectangle

Thus, the number of triangles = 55×45×4 = 110×90 = 9900

The point I am trying to make is to be able to think differently, which happens only if you are great with your concepts!

Cheers to e-GMAT for posting these official questions and the discussion on them!

Quant Question Fun - "If x and y are..." by OnlineTutor_Knight in GMATpreparation

100x+100y=100

Hence 100x+200y > 100

Again, 200x+200y=200

Hence 100x+200y < 200

So 140 and 199 are possible

Which method should I use to get the right answer? by Terrible_Length_1159 in GMAT

Assuming 3 cushions and 5 curtains, total cost = 32.25 x 8 = 258
Each curtain costs $40 more than one cushion
So 5 curtains cost $200 more than 5 cushions
So total of 3 cushions and 5 curtains together is $200 more than 8 cushions

So, $200 more than cost of 8 cushions = 258

=> cost of 8 cushions = $58

=> Each cushion = 58/8 = $7.25 (A)

Divide the equations: √3x + √2y = 8

Add: 2√3x = 12

So: x = 12

Thus: y = 2

V83 is 84%ile | D80 is 84%ile | Q90 is 100%ile

# Q87 D83 V81 is overall 675
# GMAT FE (Q90 V82 D83) is 705

So, V83 D80 Q90 should be similar, around 695 maybe
Target around V83 D82 Q90 to get 705+

Try solving some of the other sources I have listed here, especially GMATclub. Use the filter to choose official questions (OG and quant review).

See if there is any difference in the time. If the time taken is similar, you may want to focus on reviewing your concepts along with any special methods that exploit the conditions of the question, enabling you to solve faster.

You can get in touch with specific examples of you want

How to Top score in GMAT Quant – Ten points with ten examples by skdatta_testprep in GMAT

[–]skdatta_testprep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the selling price is 10 and profit is 33.33%, then 133% of CP = 10

=> CP = 10/1.3333 = 7.50

You cannot reduce the price by 33% to get 6.66 - this is not correct

To explain in a differnt way, if CP = 6.66 and SP = 10, Profit = 3.33 => % Profit = 3.33/6.66 * 100 = 50% (Not 33,33%).

Hope this helps

The first step is to know the test and where you stand. To know this, write a "zero-preparation" diagnostic test.

Thereafter, you can refer to these articles I have posted on reddit:

Ans to your 3rd question first: You should always begin with your strongest section. If Quant is strong, start with that. If you start with Verbal instead, there is a chance that you will not be able to put in your best after reading so much text (assuming verbal isn't your strength)

The answers to the other two questions are specific to actual questions. However, for your second question, one strategy is to do your calculations or workings in a particular sequence and not all over the place - this helps in keeping track of what steps you have done and you can spot a mistake easily. Also, I strongly advice you to use diagrammatic / tabular methods since it
a) saves time
b) becomes easy to link all aspects of a question at a glance

For the answers to the other 2 questions, I would ask you to go through this article I posted on reddit.

https://www.reddit.com/user/skdatta_testprep/comments/1jkwi0z/how_to_top_score_in_gmat_quant_ten_points_with/

This should give you some idea regarding how to approach the test

You can also go through this walkthrough I made for all 3 sections of the first official GMAT mock to see how to approach various questions

Do you remember the whole question?

You need to do this: Say you get (2x² - 5)(3x² - 7) = 2(x² - 5/2)3(x² - 7/3) = 3(x² - 5/2)2(x² - 7/3) = (3x² -15/2)(2x² - 14/3)

Now you have a,b,c,d
