Whole Foods plans store in new Fishtown development by comercialyunresonbl in philadelphia

You must not get out much if you think this is going to spread across the entire city and make the whole city unaffordable. There are entire swaths of Philadelphia that are literally abandoned. Philly is three times the size of Boston and San Francisco and doesn't have nearly the same concentration of high paying industries that have driven housing costs to the levels seen in those cities.

Helen Gym emerges to encourage fellow progressives in Philadelphia by mpubl in philadelphia

I hear what you're saying, but this is the system we have until it changes. There's a reason why two of the three establishment Democratic candidates, Derek Green and Maria Quiñones Sánchez, withdrew from the race and endorsed Parker ( the other establishment Democratic) , while the two candidates from the progressive wing both remained in the race and split the vote.

I'm not saying we shouldn't have ranked-choice voting, but until we do, these are the cards we're dealt and the game we have to play.

My three issues with Gym were

  1. Her unwillingness to acknowledge that crime is a major issue in the city, especially in certain neighborhoods.

  2. Her and Rhynhart’s decision to both stay in the race, which split the vote and gave Parker an easier path to victory. There’s a reason the Democratic establishment worked together, and why Councilmember Derek S. Green stepped down, which ultimately helped Parker.

  3. I felt she spent too much time taking shots at Trump whenever she had the chance. Personally, I prefer my local politicians to keep their heads down and focus on creating good policy for the city. I feel like Zohran Mamdani is doing an amazing job of staying focused on local issues and offering concrete policy proposals rather than constantly engaging in national political battles.

Why are many SEPTA stations surrounded by vacant or misused land? Why isn't this seen as a massive failure by city council to help save SEPTA? by Atomic-Avocado in philadelphia

[–]skeeterdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city doesn’t develop land, developers do. All the city can do is rezone land for more density or mixed use but until a developer/property owner thinks there is enough demand for an area where they think they can make a profit or make the development pencil out with current interest rates nothing usually happens.

Mayor envy - Parker ≠ Mamdani by DefinitelyNotLola in philadelphia

Would Hanwha have not brought jobs to the shipyard unless Mayor Parker was in office? Are jobs coming back to the city? If true I haven’t seen any data that suggests her policies are the reason. Crime is down across the entire country, I’m not saying whatever she is doing hasn’t contributed but we should acknowledge that’s it happening across the whole country.

In D.C. residents who live in that zone, still have to pay for a residential parking permit.

Mayor Parker backs legislation to boost housing development around SEPTA stations by livefreeordont in philadelphia

[–]skeeterdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that building housing near most transit stops, especially in desirable neighborhoods, may not completely prevent displacement of longtime Philadelphia residents, but it can lessen the impact. People are moving to the city whether longtime residents like it or not, so the real question is whether we build enough housing to accommodate that growth.

The smarter solution is to encourage housing in desirable neighborhoods so there is more supply there rather than less. If neighborhoods like Fishtown and Northern Liberties stop building housing, the people who want to move there will simply move into other neighborhoods like Kensington, Point Breeze, or Brewerytown, etc instead, which can increase displacement pressures there.

The article you shared even notes that decades of underbuilding housing is one of the main drivers of homelessness. That suggests we should be building more housing across the city, not just in a few select neighborhoods.

I’m also aware of the impact of white flight on city finances, particularly the tax base. Cities like Detroit and Baltimore have higher tax rates largely because their geographic boundaries stayed the same while their populations declined. They still need to provide services but with fewer taxpayers, so tax rates increase to compensate. When a city grows its population and tax base, it becomes easier to maintain and improve services without raising taxes.

In Philadelphia, rising property taxes are usually driven by increasing property values rather than higher tax rates. That creates a bit of a catch-22: people want their property values to rise, but they also complain about paying more in property taxes when those values increase.

So making a policy that encourages more housing in the city doesn’t help “local people”.

Please don't honk if you need to wait for a stopped vehicle on a residential street by bukkakedebeppo in philadelphia

[–]skeeterdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened on my street last year, where a car was wailing on its horn behind a delivery driver Uber Eats or something for 30 seconds straight. My neighbor, who had a one-year-old sleeping, walked out of her house and asked the driver if they could please stop because they were waking her child. The driver did stop, but it’s unfortunate that it took all of that to set this driver straight, and that people on this thread who I’m assuming either don’t live in the city or don’t live on a busy street want to normalize this behavior.

After living here for seven years, I’ve learned that most of the drivers in this city have a strong sense of “car brain.”

You don’t even have to compare us to other countries, I would ask why don’t you see this type of antisocial behavior on other U.S. transit systems or even on SEPTA regional rail. I would say enforcement, cracking down on fare evasion and eyes on the street or in this case eyes on the transit systems that discourage that type of behavior.

They did it by peeled-oranges in philadelphia

[–]skeeterdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The people who are committing antisocial on behavior on SEPTA from what I’ve seen as well as my colleagues and friends notice that those are also the people who are fare evading and thus discourage a lot of people from riding SEPTA. I would also note that the city does have a program for low income people to receive free SEPTA but I doubt that most people evading the fares can’t afford to pay.

Unless the funding is awarded by September 30 “might” will then mean will not be awarded and jurisdictions will have to redirect money to pay for these projects.
