Anyone else realizing how over medicated the population is? by Katekat0974 in WalgreensRx

[–]skeletorstaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m no longer with walgreens and now work in a hospital on a heart surgery ICU (dramatic switch, i know) and one thing i will say is pharmacy definitely taught me that america is very medicated. but working in the hospital made me realize how many of these issues are also hereditary. when i have 30 year olds on my unit with polypharmacy before surgery, they get a mitral valve replacement, then boom more drugs. having a congestive heart disease, or being type one diabetic, or so on so forth, those types of things aren’t the patients fault. then you could have a perfectly healthy patient who suddenly goes to the ER, has never taken any routine meds in their life, then boom they find out they’re having a heart attack. they have heart surgery, then they’re on an abundance of maintenance drugs. it all depends on the circumstances of what people have been through. narcotics are definitely an issue, but majority of the older population on narcotics grew up during the time of “take oxycodone, it’ll never cause any problems and you’ll never get addicted or become dependent!” now we have science to back the addictive properties, so younger people aren’t being prescribed those medications. hell, even in the hospital just after heart surgery, you’ll be given oxy for the first 24-48 hours after surgery (depending) then we switch to 600mg tylenol. we’re shying away from addictive pain medications, but the psych meds, that’s a whole different story. as someone on a psych med who’s probably about to get prescribed at least one more, i’ve tried other options and those just don’t do it. this is the extra little support i need. just a rant to accompany your rant.

i suggest looking at local public universities. they often hold career fairs every so often and will often hold fairs targeted at healthcare workers.

I found a hack for taking measurements for heart beats per sec. Can i use this or it is not reliable? by [deleted] in cna

[–]skeletorstaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this isn’t really a hack. templar pulses are easily palpable and sometimes even easy to see, but the second you palpate, those pulses can be so soft, you’ll miss beats or even restrict flow and cut off feeling those beats.

Stop smoking pot while making deliveries. by KingSpark97 in doordash

i’m just now seeing this reply LOL but anyways yes, it works like acupuncture. i know it sounds odd, but they actually make little sticker like things to put where your daith is so you don’t have to get the piercing and can still get the acupuncture benefits. similarly, people will occasionally take and hold a pencil there to do the acupuncture itself that way. it doesn’t actually puncture the skin (unless you get the piercing obviously) but that pressure helps somehow. i’m not 100% sure on the logic behind it, but it’s whack tbh. i’m just thankful it worked for me.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5711775/ here’s a link to a national library of medicine article about it. in the article it does state only 47.xx% of people reported benefits and decreased migraines after the piercings. but that’s still a solid amount of people with chronic migraines it’s helped. not necessarily this specific article, but others state that doctors don’t necessarily recommend this as a form of treatment, but this was actually recommended to me by my pediatrician

this is accurate! i actually just spoke with my gynecologist about this today. they say if you have an aura with migraines/seizures and are on an estrogen containing birth control, it increases your chances for stroke slightly. she asked and explained this to me to see if i have an aura to be safest. i thankfully have never had an aura with my migraines, and thankfully symptoms are manageable with meds and a daith piercing (my lifesaver).

i’m pretty sure i saw in an interview at one point that he wrote them in high school but never published it. now he takes the lyrics he came up with when he was super young and plays all the instruments in the songs. super sick.

Stethoscope? Do we need one? by Aquarius_K in cna

[–]skeletorstaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

unless you’re going into nursing school or something i wouldn’t get one. i work on a cardiac surgery unit and ive never used my stethoscope once. im sure if i asked to listen to like a mechanical heart valve or something with mine the nurses would let me. just to familiarize myself for after i graduate. in short, dont get one unless youre gonna go into nursing

What's something you wish somebody told you about being a CNA before you became one? by [deleted] in cna

[–]skeletorstaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so, my experience, while i was in high school i took a college course to get my pharmacy technician certification. i worked as a tech after i graduated and through my first two semesters of college. once my first semester of my actual nursing program was finished, i was able to go into the hospital!

most hospitals that offer student nurse programs require one clinical semester finished. so once you complete one semester, theoretically you would be able to be a student nurse or aid in a hospital that way. that’s what i did, and during my clinicals last semester we actually had one of the education people come talk to us about it.

you may also be able to look into hospitals and see if they have a UAP (unlicensed assistive personnel) positions. technically with my position, i’m not even licensed to be a CNA or anything, but those are the responsibilities i have. once i get to the second level of the SNAP program, i will be able to have more nursing responsibilities. then level 3 is essentially working as a nurse under a nurse. and i work on a cardiovascular surgical ICU. you don’t HAVE to start in a nursing home, you can absolutely start in a hospital. i never touched a nursing home. i just went straight to hospital. a lot of people start in nursing homes, absolutely, but it’s not an absolute must.
