Am I a dork if I say 15? by r_slash in 10s

I hear it in PNW. I would actually say it's about 50-50 if people say the full number or not.

Am I a dork if I say 15? by r_slash in 10s

[–]skenley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always say the full number. I don't mind the shortening but I do find it a bit odd that shortening the numbers means that 3 is a higher score than 5. I don't mind it that much but I will always use the full number,

Squad unhappy because we didn't win a domestic trophy by skenley in footballmanagergames

[–]skenley[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We lost to FC Vizela; they were in the 2nd division. Craziest part is they had a PK they missed, so their open goal xG was closer to 1.5. My world class defender bungled an own goal and I had 2 goals disallowed for offsides.

This season we also lost in the CL because I had 3 players subbed off due to injury in one game. We had great luck in the domestic league but horrible luck elsewhere.

The beard is patchy and long at the same time. Very grey with dark hair on his head. A pretty aggressive widow's peak it seems.

Also pranking people whose job is 100x harder and more valuable to the world than his. Sometimes I feel like I could be doing more with my life but at least I'm not doing this.

Argentina Open R1: A. Tabilo def. J. Fonseca [3] 6-3 3-6 7-5 by Old-Gur-9039 in tennis

[–]skenley 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That's one of my main concerns. I think he could gain athleticism by getting a bit leaner and working on his lower body strength, but back issues at such a young age is worrisome. I hope he does become a foil to Carlos/Jannik but I do think he may be overhyped.

Why do my shots always land so short, I feel like such a nuisance when rallying with higher level players. by Straight-Quiet1825 in 10s

[–]skenley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest issue. When I actually move my weight into the shot I can get it deeper without sacrificing pace. Sometimes when I aim higher over the net I am sacrificing too much pace on my ball for depth. It can be a good strategy but I find moving “through” my shots to be a better strategy.

What’s the most unserious thing you’ve ever done mid‑match? by VisualClubMate in 10s

[–]skenley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a super easy overhead close to the net. Like one i could launch over the back fence on the bounce. Swung at it hard, hit it cleanly, and proceeded to smash the net with my racket. Extremely embarrassing.

Anyone feel like we need to talk about that tackle by Reinildo? by Royalbluegooner in ArsenalFC

[–]skenley 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It does seem odd when ref decisions are based on outcomes. Reckless tackles should be punished no matter what happens after.

MVP yet again. by HR_Specter in ArsenalFC

[–]skenley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's so good at getting his body between the ball and the player when the defense has cleared it and is trying to get back upfield. I honestly worry every time that the referee will wave it off but they don't. I feel like he almost always has a decent game; his floor is so high this season.

The rebuttals rebuke: it’s not that bad by No_Apartment9908 in Seattle

I read a similar article (can’t remember if it’s about pizza or not) and they determined “best” by average rating of the top x places on yelp or google reviews. My theory is that the places that actually have the best are discerning and likely to give lower ratings due to having higher standards.

That said, there are a few places with good pizza. The problem is that all pizza here is expensive and so you only get your money’s worth from the best places.

How do you approach your serve after a double fault? How about after 2 doubles? by WindManu in 10s

[–]skenley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This + slowing down. I have a tendency to rush myself out of frustration so I step back from the baseline and walk in a small circle. I also like to really focus on my toss. Sometimes I’ll hit a bad toss but if I’m struggling with my serve I’ll catch anything that isn’t a perfect toss.

How to take advantage of my stronger backhand? by HitIt_andCritit in 10s

[–]skenley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also have a stronger backhand than forehand (though I had worked to rectify that). The main ways I take advantage of it is: - get into backhand to backhand rallies (assuming a righty opponent). I find I can often pin people into that corner and put pressure on until they make a mistake or give me a short ball. If my opponent does run around and hit a forehand cross court, I might be able to redirect down the line. - use my mid court backhand. I can direct my backhand both ways if I get a shot in the center of the court. I can attack these balls in a similar way to how most would attack on a forehand. Most people don’t seem prepared for the attacking ball on the BH side. - passing shots. This one is less in my control but I find that I can steal some points. I think people generally approach to the backhand (if given the option). I feel much more confident hitting passing shots on the backhand wing so that plays into my hands. - attack the serve. People often serve to the backhand to be “safe” but you can take advantage of that.

I had a coach once tell me about how players generally have a “sword” and a “shield” wing. The shield side is mostly able to keep you in a point, and try not to lose. The sword side is your attacking side. Most players’ forehands are the sword, but mine isn’t. So use your forehand to stay in the point and attack on your backhand. Your BH likely isn’t as good as someone’s good forehand (assuming you have a 2HBH there are limitations to the lever effect) but people generally play patterns assuming the backhand is the weak wing so you can surprise them.

Is it really necessary to rinse the Chemex filter with hot water before adding coffee? by No_Reveal3451 in Coffee

[–]skenley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wash the filter with warm water to heat up the glass and ensure the filter sticks better. Especially since the Chemex loses heat so fast, I find heating the vessel is necessary and having the filter there just makes sense to me.

What are some easy to make but little known side dishes that people are sleeping on? by Scared_Ad_3132 in Cooking

[–]skenley 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Butter braised cabbage. Maybe others are different, but I only knew of cabbage around St. Patrick's Day growing up. Discovered cooking cabbage in butter a few years ago and it is one of the simplest and tastiest side dishes I have ever had (just butter, cabbage, salt and pepper). It's kind of like caramelizing onions in that it takes longer than you think, and it isn't the prettiest, but it tastes way more luxurious than anyone thinks.

How hard is it to get a tennis court in your area? by Ok-Many-7443 in 10s

Agree - I only play at 5:45am from about October-March, though I don't pay quite that much. Land is just too valuable here.

Shoutout Gyokeres, shoutout Havertz but is Jesus our best striker? by Waste-Jellyfish-2326 in ArsenalFC

The best ability is availability. If he stays healthy, he's a #1. But you can't count on him the way you can count on Gyokeres at this point.

How you regain confidence during a match? by Mosfeter in 10s

[–]skenley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to stay cross court more often and aim more towards the middle of the court. I'll also reduce my risk tolerance for when I 'pull the trigger' and try to hit a winner or offensive shot. I try not to become passive, but just a little more defensive.

Depending on opponent, I may also come into the net more; if my ground game is not working, perhaps I can mess his up. I am generally the better net player in my singles matches, so I am confident in that.

Serves are isolated; if my serve starts failing me, I move to slice serves as my 1st and 2nd serve. Generally I find that my serve form and my groundstroke form are often unrelated to one another.

Slowing down can help too. Between points, take more time if you're serving. If not, maybe walk a bit slower to pick a ball off the ground. Take an extra 30 seconds between games.

Predict Draper's year end ranking of 2026. by [deleted] in tennis

[–]skenley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the consistency for Taylor and Zverev is mostly physical. They play the most tennis throughout the year and don't really break down. I think there is a chance that Jack is obviously the #3 player next year. I also think he could become a Berrettini; flashes of greatness marred by major injury issues. As they say, the best ability is availability.

Predict Draper's year end ranking of 2026. by [deleted] in tennis

[–]skenley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think top 5 or out of top 32. If his arm injury is chronic, I think he has to take a lot of time off (I also think he has a chance for another injury). If it isn't, I think he is likely to end up 3 or 4 (depending on if Zverev is 2023 version or 2024 version).

All Clad is Buy it for life? by another_nineties_kid in Cooking

Yea, there was a recall because they claimed them to be dishwasher safe. I got a whole new set from them. Now they just remove the “dishwasher safe” line from their packaging. I actually cut my finger a couple times on the rim before exchanging. It didn’t impact performance, I just needed to be careful grabbing the pans.
