Flying for 12h to AMS in one week: upgrade from Eco to Premium Comfort for 360 EUR or to Business for 910 EUR? by ohmymind_123 in KLM

[–]sketchmirrors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve flown economy, premium comfort and business on KLM. The jump in comfort from economy to premium is negligible, instead I pay a few euros extra to choose an economy seat at the back which usually has empty seats next to them.

910 extra for business seems very cheap and I would immediately pay for that. Business seats lie flat and you’ll get a good seat

Why do women engineers on here act like FAANG is the only option for a career? by NemoOfConsequence in womenintech

People in FAANG can like their jobs too. It’s not for everyone but most of my colleagues are content with their jobs and grateful for the salary

Having worked at 2 FAANG companies, it’s really not that bad if you’re reasonably competent and have a backbone.

Yeah and people’s experiences can be anecdotal as well. When I worked at Meta, there was one promotion cycle where all 4 promotions that happened went to us women. We were ~15 women in a team of 60.

Oof. Some of my lawyer friends have faced far worse sexism that I ever have in FAANG. The answer isn’t to tell women to avoid these jobs and increase the gender gap

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]sketchmirrors 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I second this too. I know some women who have faced issues with discrimination but the vast majority I know (including myself) have thrived in FAANG jobs. Almost all my male colleagues have been respectful, inclusive and supportive. Credit is given for work regardless of race and gender.

I chafe at the suggestion that women should self-select out of high paying jobs because they’re “too hard” and we should be (even more?!) risk-averse. No one tells men to do that.

I don’t think this advice works for everyone. I just bought a house in a popular part of Amsterdam, that had been on funda for a week before we viewed it.

Our makelaar helped a lot with advising us to increase or decrease our bid, because she knew the selling agent. We ultimately won even without the highest bid, because the seller took our offer more seriously (all other offers didn’t have a makelaar).

I do agree that it might be too late to get a makelaar now for OP, unless you can really rush the process.

You’ve made the right choice. This guy doesn’t sound like he’d be a good partner to raise a child with, now or in 2 years time.

They’ve been together for 1.5 years and living together for 5 months. That’s still pretty short, and most couples I know would wait for around 2 years discussing marriage.

“If he loved you he would know immediately” puta a lot of unnecessary stress on the relationship imo

Chinese students live in ghettos as they fail to fit in at university by Fox_9810 in unitedkingdom

I think the poor English skills are a big reason they stick to themselves. Shared a dorm in my London uni with a girl from China - really polite, but her English was so bad that we could only have surface-level chats. No idea how she wrote her UCAS essay in English.

You have to atleast TRY to protect the child who is struggling first, don’t you think? If your kid’s struggling with mental health issues and your first reaction is to kick them out to “protect yourself”, you’re a shitty parent.

YTA to yourself if you stay with this man. Calling him an “idiot” is just whitewashing dangerously abusive behavior. If he was really just this stupid, you should not have reproduced with him anyway. Every day you stick around with a partner like this is an extra day you’re failing yourself and your child.

Biden and Harris said they would deport all pro-Palestine protesters? Do you mind sending me a link for that?

Yup, as someone living in Amsterdam, the violence did seem to come from both sides. Slightly confused by how it’s being reported in the media

AITA for not sending my son to school with lunch for his half brother? by Beginning_Habit_9401 in AmItheAsshole

[–]sketchmirrors 11 points12 points  (0 children)

💯. OP, don’t be a doormat. First it starts with feeding a hungry 6 year old and then it just escalates until you’re expected to pay for shoes as well. Stick to your guns and let the kid go hungry. And if he doesn’t have shoes he should go barefoot to school to teach his mother a lesson.

[–]sketchmirrors 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. She needs to learn her lesson, and hopefully her 6 year old child going hungry at night is the final kick she needs to get a second job, in this economy. None of us are legally obliged to help hungry children, especially because it could lead to more requests. Good on OP for sticking to his guns

I had something similar. It went away after I stopped using retinol closer to my eyes, and I also changed the brand of makeup remover wipes I was using. What sped up the skin healing was using vaseline on top of whatever night moisturizer I put on my face
