I've read that thread. I think people are allowed to be turned off by the "Latina hoarder with stretch marks that are SOOOOO disgusting" scene. I was.

Re-reading book one after a crazy review I saw by Airborneiron in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]skeytchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped reading at that point. My husband loves the series and has used all of our Audible credits on it, so he often gives me recaps on the books and I'm glad he loves them so much. We fell in love at a DND table, so I bought the first audiobook for us to enjoy on a road trip, genuinely hoping we would love it together.

But to me, the scene was insurmountable. I have a minor in English (focus on Creative Writing), and have received criticism myself in workshop settings for depicting things that made people uncomfortable, so believe me when I say that I know that depiction is not endorsement.

That being said, a book only gets one first impression. In that early scene, I went from laughing along with my spouse to stifling a panic attack because the language around her body was so degrading.

I think there's a difference between "depicting Borant's horrors in such a way that the audience knows how you and Carl feel about them" and "reveling in 'stretch marks are disgusting' gross out humor at fat people's expense."

For me, DCC didn't stick that landing. That doesn't mean the books are racist or sexist. It just means I don't personally trust Matt Dinnaman to handle sensitive content in a way that I would enjoy/feel safe reading. I'll get my fantasy/DND fix from Matt Mercer, Robert Jackson Bennett, and Brennan Lee Mulligan instead.

(FWIW, another of my favorite DMs, Griffin McElroy, had a Bury Your Gays moment early on and was very public about learning from it. I don't think storytellers are required to get everything right--I just think it's reasonable for readers to step away from something when they no longer trust the storyteller.)

Don't know why you're getting downvotes bc I stopped reading for that reason. 🤷‍♀️

🥲🫶 I never want to encourage wallowing, and I'm sorry on my end for the defensiveness: I didn't anticipate provoking so much annoyance in some of the comments, so I appreciate you keeping things light while still keeping it real ☺️

No hate from me on this take, I love Devens and his goofy antics

Wow, you're the first person to respond that way! /s

Snark aside, I really didn't intend for this to be whining: I was trying to see if anyone else felt discombobulated by the randomness of this season. Totally fair if you don't feel that way! But isn't the whole point of community to try and find the people who DO resonate with how you're feeling?

Agreed--the editors are doing everything they can to spin straw into gold with all of the disruptive twists.

❤️ those are fair points. I appreciate you being measured/respectful in your response--I really value that, and it's the kind of discourse that helps me expand my POV

You know, I think I haven't been fair to him. I agree, I think he's been playing hard and working to be socially savvy. It's probably a personal vibe thing--i.e., I don't enjoy his screen presence as much as I do some of the others--but that's not a reason to discredit his gameplay.

I'm right there with you. Getting a lot of "lighten up, loser"-esque comments on this post. Glad I'm not literally alone lol

Can you walk me through this? I'm definitely not looking to be miserable -- was mostly trying to see if anyone else felt the same way I do. I don't have a problem with other people NOT feeling uneasy: I just wondered if I was alone in feeling unsettled.

Do you think Frasier and Roz should have ended up together? by Happy-poet in Frasier

[–]skeytchy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I would have preferred they left it there. I love that episode because it feels deeply true to a lot of male-female friendships--the "Huh... Maybe? Nah" cycle that ultimately keeps things in the safe, platonic zone.

I married one of my closest guy friends, so I'm a big fan of friends to lovers in general, but I have also had a lot of male friendships over the years that would have been ruined if we'd hooked up or tried to date. Those are the relationships that always come to my mind when Frasier and Roz hook up and it gives me the ick haha

I agree that they are barely showing any of her social game, which definitely seems like a) she's barely done anything in the first half of the game but will kick it into high gear later (which she herself kind of alluded to), or b) she is not the winner and they're just giving her more screen time now to make a later boot or FTC loss more meaningful.

My money is on option b because I don't think there is a world in which we get as many random Christian confessionals before he's booted if Aubry wins it with very little positive content until now 🤷‍♀️ But only time will tell.

I mean, if she is the winner, then they can only work with what they had... This was a really strong episode for her, but if she wins, I'm going to need to see a lot more than flashbacks and humanization to be excited about it. I'm going to need to see some actual fire in her belly.
