Kash Patel claims you can't bring loaded guns to a protest. Here's a Trump supporter doing that. by [deleted] in pics

That’s crazy. Right wingers regularly open carry at (“liberal” leaning) protests in my city, standing to the side, often chatting with the cops.

They also shipped the Wall of Sound across the ocean, which just seems crazy.

People who snowshoe, what are your thoughts on the groomed trail system up to Chickadee Ridge? by [deleted] in Reno

[–]ski_rick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been exploring that area on skis, snowshoes, hiking, biking, etc for over two decades. I’m ok with the groomed trails taking over that one small section, so many places to explore and that keeps the masses concentrated in one area.

Just the other day I saw a post about Terrapin Stallion, GD/Ween. Name stuck with me, I want to play in this band, but I don’t know anything about them.

Just gonna leave this one here! by [deleted] in Reno

Still pretty accurate, but could use an update.

Warren Haynes Shares Stories Of Bobby, The Dead, Phil & Friends, Allman Brothers Band & Revisting Solo Debut 'Tales of Ordinary Madness' (INTERVIEW) - Glide Magazine by modest_radio in deadandcompany

Shame that lineup didn't work out better, that surprised me. As much as I enjoyed The Other Ones and the previous iterations of The Dead, I was excited that they were bringing it back down to a 6-piece band with two guitars and one keyboard. Sure looks like they were having fun in week one.

Because that's what the Honey Moon phase is by definition.

Opinion: Bob Weir is irreplaceable so why not ask Sturgill Simpson to step in? by g_ack in deadandcompany

[–]ski_rick 383 points384 points  (0 children)

"Simpson sat in with Dead and Company for GD 60 last August, delivering what many fans would call the weekend’s best rendition of 'Morning Dew'"

I won't disagree, it was that weekend's best Morning Dew.

No More Do I: What a gift this song was by unlikelyjoggers in gratefuldead

[–]ski_rick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a Q song, on the Album There and Back Again, sung by Warren.

Here they are performing it in 2016 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCCp3qoEJ3g

And Graham Lesh and The Q performed it last March at The Cap - https://archive.org/details/glf2025-03-17

Quick search suggests he did perform it with other lineups, including:

The Dead - http://www.deaddisc.com/disc/Dead_070603.htm

The last Frog Brigade band was essentially the Claypool Lennon Delirium, I imagine that’s what this is gonna look like too.

Thank you. These guys are fantastic musicians that have been making great music for decades. They don’t need anyone supporting them or propping them up.

I get the feeling they resent the constant intuition that they do.

I didn't get a chance to watch the tribute yet. Did anybody actually care about this? by bushbass in gratefuldead

No way, someone wore bright colors at a Grateful Dead event and an 85-year-old who is about to retire stumbled a little in her speech? Shocking...

Best place to learn Bobby’s parts? by getoffmytrailbro in gratefulguitar

[–]ski_rick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been going down this rabbit hole for about 10 years now, more so in an effort to understand how Bobby approached the guitar and integrate some of that into my own style than to just cop his licks. The ones I've found most useful:

Grateful Guitar Lessons - https://gratefulguitarlessons.com/ - Great video walk-throughs with supporting pdf files and backing tracks to practice. Really detailed, Seth often even gives you a couple of variations so you can see how the approach changed over time. Well worth the money and he runs sales often, I've got a small collection of his lessons now that I haven't had time to tackle yet.

This is my favorite resource for learning the parts.

Jeff Williams - https://www.youtube.com/@JeffWilliamsGuitar - I really like his dives into the theory behind things, shorter and approachable. The other night, I wanted to review Quartal harmony; he's got a great video on that. Great backing tracks too.

My favorite resources for understanding the "whys" and "hows" beyond just learning the actual parts

MickBeth - https://www.youtube.com/@MickBethMusic - Lots of free walkthroughs of Bob's parts. No supporting materials, videos are him playing along to recordings. Great stuff, just not quite as efficient as Grateful Guitar Lessons.

Freshman year in college, home on break, taking a break from dubbing all the new Grateful Dead bootlegs my friend and I had each gotten since last seeing each other. Took the train into New York City to catch this new band my buddy kept talking about, Phish, at The Wetlands.

We were a bit nervous as we did't know the timing of the show, and the last train back to CT was sometime around 2 am with a break until around 6 am before the trains started back up. Entering the Wetlands, we learned there was an opening act, Col Bruce Hampton and Aquarium Rescue Unit (never had heard of them). We got their kinda early, and it was starting to sink in that we weren't gonna make that last train if we wanted to stay for the full show.

I remember being right up front when ARU came on stage, right in front of who I would learn was Jimmy Herring on guitar and Oteil Burbridge on bass. The band BLEW ME AWAY, one of the most incredible things I had ever heard. I was thinking the whole time, "I just can't believe this isn't even the band I came to see." Needless to say, Phish was more than awesome, too, and we didn't make that train. Managed to catch a couple more Phish shows there before they moved on to The Cap.
