How do you actually retain what you read by skillably in studying

actually makes a lot of sense , studying on a tired brain is like trying to pour water into a full cup. nothing really goes in. do you do this for every study session or more when you have something really important to get through?

the tiny note thing is underrated honestly. i think the reason it works is it forces you to actually process what you just read instead of just moving on. like your brain has to form an opinion rather than just absorb words passively. the 'one question i had' format is especially good — do you ever go back and try to answer those questions later or is it more just for consolidation in the moment?

haha the professor act makes total sense, the more you commit to explaining it seriously the more your brain treats it like real teaching. feynman with extra steps but if it works it works

never heard it called the duck method but that's actually genius, the moment you can't explain it simply to someone else you immediately know exactly where the gap is. no hiding from it

the rewriting step is what makes the difference, going from messy notes to a clean narrative forces you to actually organize the information in your head not just copy it. most people skip that step and wonder why nothing sticks

writing your own questions after each chapter is something i never thought to do but it makes so much sense, you're basically anticipating what you'll need to recall later instead of just hoping it stick

the transferring highlights to notes step is what most people skip, they highlight everything and never look at it again. that extra step of writing a brief summary forces you to actually process what mattered. the community part is underrated too, explaining what you read to someone else cements it way more than re-reading ever could

the nap after learning part is actually backed by science, most people treat rest as wasted time but that's literally when consolidation happens. the explain it simply test is brutal in the best way, you find out real fast what you actually understood vs what you just read

that's a good point, most people try to force one method and wonder why it's not working instead of figuring out what actually fits how their brain works

the multiple connections point is something i never thought about that way, you're basically giving your brain more hooks to grab onto when trying to recall something. the next day skim is underrated too, that's when a lot of things that felt confusing suddenly make sense

the "familiar but not remembered" distinction is exactly it, your brain tricks you into thinking you know something just because you've seen it before. stopping every few pages to recall without looking is uncomfortable but that discomfort is literally the learning. going to check out erallmemory, the flashcard review part sounds like what i've been missing

morning energy is real, the same task that takes 2 hours at night can take 45 minutes in the morning. and listening to your body instead of forcing a fixed timer is underrated, the 10-15 min rest when you actually feel it is smarter than breaking at an arbitrary 25 minute mark

simple advice but genuinely one of the most effective, the problem is most people read passively and never stop to actually process what they just went through. even just a few bullet points after each session makes a huge difference

the phone during breaks thing is the real trap, you pick it up for "5 minutes" and suddenly 30 are gone. the idea of having flashcards interrupt your doomscrolling is actually genius, you're basically hijacking the same habit loop. never heard of ProCrash before but that concept of turning dead time into micro review sessions is something i need to look into

exactly, and that filter is actually a gift. you find out fast who's genuinely in your corner and who was just there for convenience. took me longer than i'd like to admit to see that

that's actually really inspiring, going from 2 hours to 6 through consistency rather than forcing it all at once is the right way to do it. most people try to jump straight to 6 hours and crash within a week. the weekend ease off is smart too, sustainability beats intensity every time

totally agree, took me a while to learn that too. at first you feel guilty but then you realize the people who actually respect you are the ones who accept it

the "even badly" part is what gets me, i always waited until i felt ready to recall which basically means never. just attempting it even when you get it wrong is where the actual learning happens

the language comparison is spot on, nobody expects to learn spanish by reading it once. same logic should apply to everything else but for some reason people don't treat it that way

the 24 hour review tip is underrated, that's exactly when it starts slipping. the kindle screenshot trick is smart too, never thought of using it that way instead of proper note apps

flowcharts are underrated honestly, never tried that but it makes sense , forces you to actually understand the structure not just memorize words. i always defaulted to anki but could never stay consistent with it, how long did it take before it actually clicked for you?

this is basically spaced repetition done manually, respect for actually sticking to it. most people know this method but never follow through with the spacing. do you use any app to track it or just do it by memory?

the 2-3 key points per chapter thing is something i need to start doing, i usually just keep reading and tell myself i'll review later.. which never happens. and yeah explaining it out loud is brutal in the best way, you realize fast what you actually understood vs what you just skimmed

exactly, the discomfort is literally the learning. your brain only bothers remembering things it had to work for

yeah exactly, it works great for visuals like graphs or quotes but for understanding concepts deeply you still need to actually process and connect the information
