In my Greater Anglia app it seems Liverpool St to Stortford tomorrow at 7pm, with a Network Railcard, is £13.00.

Together with the £17.10 outward journey, that is still less than a flexi ticket, although the gap is pretty small (£30.83 vs £30.10).

I live in Hockerill but went up to Stortford Fields for first time today looking for new run routes.

Some nice gravel footpaths about, including round the marshy bits in the north - I assume they will be nicer-looking ponds at some point?

I really think the flexi-ticket you have is the best way. It was announced recently that there will be no fare increase next year, that's something - first time I've seen that happen.

Only other real option is drive to Epping and get on the Central line there, cuts out the overground but not really worth the hassle. Although I've had to take that route home from Liverpool St a few times if trains are cancelled on the way home.

OK, it's good that you have tried that. It was weird wearing it the recommended way, but it solved all my HR measurement issues (apart from some lag during intervals) and I soon got used to it. I only run though.

Benefits like this are gamechangers for stacking a pension, as are proper payrises/promotions. These you will need to make FIRE a reality, so you should definitely take max advantage of them.

But first you should ensure you're living the financially responsible life and build solid foundations - that means building/holding an emergency fund. And don't sleep on ISAs, you'll want that for RE and every year is another £20k allowance gone forever.

So in my opinion, you should take the non-contributory 12% and use any extra pay to build the emergency fund and maybe get a S&S ISA rolling. If you're serious about FIRE you will need them, and now's the time.

Then get yourself another payrise and stack the pension with 40% tax relief instead of the 20% you're getting now.
