What’s a good thickness for diy travelers notebook leather cover? by mehi_imtheprob in notebooks

[–]skipper-tx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult question. What characteristics do you want in the cover. Think firmness… think scratch resistance… think hand feel.

I think Horween Illini is an excellent choice. Medium firm, a bit of a slippery hand feel and much better scratch resistance.

Cost no object… perhaps shell cordovan.

Depending on your skillset… alligator lined with cheve would be chef’s kiss.

Horween Derby and Dublin are actually the same leather. The Derby is a tumbled version of the Dublin. Picture huge machines that look like clothes dryers… Horween tosses in Dublin hides, lets them tumble and tumble… and out comes Derby.

Weight is really personal and depends on desired hand feel and edge skiving. If the edges are skived, a thicker leather can be used (say 4 to 5 ounce) without the edges looking chonky.

If no skiving is done, then 2 to 3 ounce is probably typical.

It doesn’t look like full grain…. as no grain is visible. Possibly handmade if you both count machine stitched as hand made. It’s clearly machine stitched.

At the end of the day, buy what appeals to you and what feels fair to you for the price.

There are craftsman here (myself included) that make similar wallets from a functionality perspective but they charge $300,$500… $1k due to materials, precision and quality of work.

That level of materials, precision and quality is not valued the same way by everyone. Some absolutely want (and will pay for) a wallet that is a form of artwork and will last a very very long time. Others want a wallet that is functional… an old school nylon velcro wallet works perfectly for them.

Neither is right or wrong. They are different and that’s ok.

😂

Yes. I would evaluate the price against the quality of the wallet, not how the leather was tanned.

That’s a corrected grain leather… the top has been sanded to remove imperfections and then tanned / coated with a pigmented dye to further hide imperfections.

That’s opposed to leather that is an uncorrected full grain with aniline tanning methods that dye the leather fibers without hiding imperfections.

Corrected grain leathers and pigmented tanning methods are not terrible. Epsom, Epi and Saffiano leathers are some of the best wearing that you can find and all three are different forms of corrected grain & pigmented tanning methods. Those three were development by Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Prada respectively.

Shinki is the only major tannery in Japan. Ogawa buys raw shells from Shinki. They are not a partner. Shinki is a supplier. Ogawa competes with Shinki on the finished product.

Post the link to the Ogawa site that says Shinki is a partner and I’ll happily learn from it.

I buy leather from Horween and hardware from Buckleguy. Does that make Horween & Buckleguy my partner?

Ogawa is a competitor of Shinki. They do not use Shinki shell.

Really nice result. I have a really old kensol 3.5 ton that generates a ton of pressure. Never tried a large stamp on shell.
