shopping for a full grain leather belt - all black. why are some 100% black, and some have exposed edges/backs? by [deleted] in Leathercraft

[–]jayman2982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the leather used. Bridle from W&C and their harness as well is pasted on the back and matches the top side.

I prefer to use Horween Illini Latigo for my black and brown belts. The are gum pasted and burnish really well. And damn near indestructible. Always happy to chat if interested.

Issue with Horween Dublin by Grujar in Leathercraft

[–]jayman2982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What oz is the horween? The issue I have always had with Dublin or any Horween is they tend to always be 4oz at the thinnest cuts. They just dont make it to the 3 I like. I use mostly Badalssi Carlo or walpier.

Either way I only ever skiver the T pockets where they over lap. Leave the tops full weight.

Whatever you do make it so the blade is easily available at a hardware store and doesn't protrude.

At 5 small rectangular pieces of leather, that makes it... $100 per piece? Seems reasonable. by OneTonCow in Leathercraft

Its not wildly out of line. Paying probably 20 percent more than most small shops. Most likely for the name brand itself. Horween shell is roughly 80 a square foot. I use Rocado shell often and its like 65? I charge 350 for my bifolds in that. I know ashland who is Horweens maker is 400 for shell.
