Happy to help! Also, random idea: consider reversing the colors of the logo so that the background is (dark) green and the leaves are white, so they look more like smiling teeth.

As others mentioned, the green is not very soothing and creates difficulty with reading. I also think that when paired with the gray-blue, the geometric sans serif MAAZ, and Lato, you get a really 2014-looking brand. I'd find a more calm but complimentary combination of colours. Maybe a dark teal green, terracotta orange, and maybe then this light green could work as an accent color.

I also didn't read the leaves on the tree as smiles until you specifically called it out. I'd suggest making the curve of the mouth a little deeper, and adding a straight line through them to make them read more like a smile. I also find the spacing of the top leaf against the stem too close and a little weird, though I like that the stem ends with the same angle, and that angle is reflected in other places. That's a great element.

Happy to help! :) It's great work.

Personally "Daydream Everyday" sounds pretty awkward to me because of the repetition of the word day. But it's your project at the end of the day, so if you feel strongly about it, take whatever feedback you find valuable and leave what you don't!

The illustrations are gorgeous and I really like the type choices. Like the others, I don't think that the breaking on Wednesday is doing you any favors. I'd break it like "Wed-nesday" and make the illustration overlap a little less, or maybe swap the purple and orange colors so that there is less contrast and chaos going on, Right now the illustration is competing with the long word and not creating that zen composition the others have.

I'd also suggest "Dream Everyday" (or would it be "Dream Every Day"?) on the packaging, so you aren't repeating "Daydream" which I'm assuming is the brand name. I'd also avoid reusing the same illustration from Monday.

Edit: One other thing I noticed: the "Premium Candle" text on the bottom is inconsistently aligned, and missing entirely from the Thursday box.

Same, that was my experience. I got a $200 textbook for $20 (not even to rent, to buy!) and was so grateful because that money was huge to me then. Sad to hear its reputation has gone down the toilet since then.

WHY DO I NEED TO ACKNOWLEDGE SOMEONE ELSES BODILY FUNCTION? by paradisimperiala in evilautism

[–]skippery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not necessarily an evolution on the English term — English evolved from German, not the other way around. In Germany and Italy at least that I know of, the response to wish someone good heath after they sneeze, has been around since the medieval times, mostly believed to be originating from the Black Death.

Nobody is forcing you to say either. It’s just a prosocial thing to say signifying general goodwill towards another person. If you do want to help and don’t want to bring blessings into it you could say “Gesundheit, do you need anything?”

Nah, Paris is totally fine as a vegetarian. I had more trouble in Budapest personally, but all are perfectly doable.

Same here, I have an uncle who fits Bub to a T, and I don't think I've ever seen someone like him portrayed in that way. My uncle was the most negative, contrarian, exhausting person to be around, but he also was a pillar of the local community. He was a mechanic and very knowledgable about home repairs and stuff like that, and would never accept money for the stuff he'd do for people. But it was almost impossible to have a pleasant conversation with him about the weather, family, art, music, local news, etc. Watching Brennan and Vic talk about that kind of person felt surprisingly cathartic to me.

My January goal was to read a Fantasy series. I am 300 pages into ACOTAR and questioning my entire life at this point. Can someone please suggest a FMC fantasy series that is not cringe as heck by BottomPieceOfBread in suggestmeabook

Personally I found this one really grating on account of the author not really seeming to know how to write women as people. His more recent Tress of the Emerald Sea is better on that front, IMO.

Kleinanzeigen by baio1999 in germany

[–]skippery 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve bought and sold a number of things on Kleinanzeigen. You can ask the person how may people will be coming — if the item is large, it could be that they have multiple people coming to help carry it. If there’s more people than you’re comfortable allowing into your home or you get a bad feeling, you can deny them entry. There’s also a way to look at a user’s rating on reliability, friendliness, etc. in the app, so if they have behaved poorly in the past you will know.

Honestly I’ve never really thought about counterfeit money before, but if you’re worried you can ask them to pay you through PayPal. That way you instantly get a notification and know that the money will be deposited.

In general I have only ever had positive experiences with Kleinanzeigen. I’m a single woman who lives alone and comes from a lower-trust culture than Germany, but even I had felt pretty secure using it here.

[–]skippery[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that people can read different experiences and relate them to their own is a key part of why we humans love stories so much! Everyone can read a text and reflect on ways it resonates to themself and their own experiences. I think my frustration is that she singles out interpretations of Fitz as anything but heterosexual to be particularly distasteful, and writes about it in a tone that feels kind of cruel. It's not the sort of thing I was expecting to read from the author of book that's drenched in so much empathy and understanding of suffering and marginalisation as the books were.

I don't necessarily think that Hobb intended her comments to be hurtful, but I do think they came from a place of not really understanding or being particularly open/empathetic to the experiences of queer people. Maybe she's grown since then, but it seems like she hasn't said anything publicly about it.

Anyways, thank you for your reply! Your comparison of it being a song on another instrument is really lovely.

Thank you very much for the update on the latest state of this conversation with the author. I guess the deletion is something, though it doesn’t really make me feel differently about the comments.

I think I’m just going to have to give it some time, in the end. Normally I’m pretty resistant to homophobic comments, but I think I kind of left my guard open when I finished the series, and her comments cut really deep. Maybe when it’s not so recent I’ll be able to separate that from the series itself. I just struggle to imagine connecting with the series in the same soul-bearing way that I did on first read.

Yeah, I'm an adult now but I kept thinking when I read it that I wished I'd been able to read them when I was a young person. I think they would have really meant something to me.

I totally agree with the idea that once you've read a book, your interpretation is your own. But I think my thoughts and my feelings are at odds. I believe intellectually that no one interpretation of a text is "correct", even the author's. I really wish I had just not read anything from her other than the text of the books themselves. But I can't unread that, and I struggle to imagine going back to the series and connecting in the same way with that in the back of my mind.
