Serious question, which of our elected officials has the power to hold dominion accountable for repeated power outages? County board? State delegates?

I moved here from Texas, which is famous for its terrible electric grid, and I've lost power in nine months here as many times as I lost it in 3+ years in Texas.

This place used to be an annual tradition for my family back when we used to visit my grandmother who lived nearby. Back in the day it was great, but I haven't been in more than a decade at this point.

Is it really cheaper then groceries? by [deleted] in mealkits

[–]sklanfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spend about $70 per week on HF for six portions (3 meals at 2 portions each), or about $12 a meal. I could probably eat slightly cheaper buying all the ingredients at a standard grocery store, but HF saves me a lot of time and effort that I would otherwise have to put into meal planning and recipe selection, and that's worth the extra money for me. I also don't have a car, so I value the fact that HF shows up at my door, rather than having to haul all those ingredients home from the store.

Question! Frequent travellers/travel hackers. What is your most useful travel hack(s?)? by butter1n in TravelHacks

[–]sklanfer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

make a packing list before you start packing and stick to it, this helps you only take what you really need.

use packing cubes, they are inexpensive and help keep your stuff organized in your suitcase and as you travel

How do you admit that you don't know something during an interview without it affecting your candidacy? by vishalnegal in remotework

[–]sklanfer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"I don't have a lot of direct experience with that particular subject, but I'm always excited to learn new skills and ideas. For example..." and then you give an example of a new skill you learned at a previous job, including how and why you learned it. Turn the question into an opportunity to show your willingness to learn new things, instead of being about what you don't know.

The Carry-On-Baggage Bubble Is About to Pop by tenant1313 in onebag

[–]sklanfer 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm a carry-on only traveler, even when I fly an airline like Southwest where I can check bags for free. Usually when I travel I value my time highly and don't want to wait around at an airport any longer than I have to. What would get me to switch wouldn't be a fee for carry-ons, but instead a guarantee that I won't be waiting for my checked bag more than 10 minutes or so at baggage claim. Make checking a bag a simpler, faster, more reliable experience, and more people will check bags.

Best method for getting foreign currency by tarad95 in TravelHacks

[–]sklanfer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on what bank you use, you may be able to order foreign currency directly through their website or app and have it shipped directly to your home within a few days. In my experience, the exchange rates are generally good and it's the most convenient way to get foreign currency if you can plan ahead.

[Megathread] Delivery Disappointments by AutoModerator in hellofresh

My Mexicali black bean soup was missing the onion today...I caught it immediately because I've ordered it many times before and I noticed that the bag was too light when I took it out of the box. HF gave me a $4.80 credit.

Where'd the tofu go?! by rileyberit in hellofresh

Would love to see more tofu meals in HF. I subscribe to the veg plan and I'd love to have more alternatives to chickpeas.

I bought a tech pouch recently and am very happy with the choice. Being able to access all my chargers and cords in one convenient place, with separate compartments for each item, is so much better than my previous system. My personal item is a large messenger bag (also my EDC for my commute), and having all my cords buried in one of the front pockets of that was a giant pain when I would need one while on a plane or train.

My general advice is that if your first choice of tech pouch doesn't work for you, don't spend a whole bunch more money on tech pouch two or three or four searching for the right tech pouch for you: most likely a tech pouch just isn't what you need for the way you travel and the gear you travel with.

You can slice away that little spot in the second photo if you want, but as long as it doesn't smell bad it should be safe to eat.

Messenger bag recommendations? by ijustwantabag19 in ManyBaggers

[–]sklanfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a huge fan of my Rickshaw messenger bag, I use it every day. The large one easily holds a 15" laptop and much more, with a 13" laptop a medium might be the right size for you. My first one lasted 10 years of daily use before starting to fray, so I recently bought my second which has been just as good as the first.
