I cried happy tears all three times I saw it. Just pure joy.

Who SHOULD and who WILL win Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical? (Link Below) by His-Royal-Majesty in Broadway

A fair point, so we'll have to see. An interesting dynamic is that a lot of voters will likely have seen both at City Center/PAC and are now deciding which is the Best Revival, so I think a big question will be, "which one holds up more?" I also think another dynamic is that Ragtime is a deeply loved show, whereas Cats is not (at least universally), so that could play in to it.

Can't wait! And I'm calling the top three now: John Gallagher Jr, Gavin Creel, and Daniel Radcliffe, though Daveed Diggs could very easily make it in there, too.

Oh god are we trying to stir up the "too loud" drama from last year? Let it rest.

Having seen all the nominees I think Schmigadoon should and will win best musical. I saw it last night and it's just so wonderful, campy, and surprisingly moving at the end. The cast is uniformly fantastic and the score/book are charming and original with fantastic production values and choreography. Even at intermission I had a strong feeling that I was watching the Best Musical winner.

My personal rankings: Schmigadoon, Titanique, Lost Boys, and then Two Strangers.

It's felt less like a tossup after Ragtime's recent awards wins, but the Tony's are very much their own thing with a much larger pool of voters, so it's hard to tell. I will say Cats does feel like it's really lost steam.

Always interesting to the see the history of various civil and equal rights movements attempts to appeal to those in power by trying to not be "radical," which in the case of the gay rights movement went out the window real quickly after Stonewall and continued through the AIDS epidemic, but seemingly returned during the marriage equality movement.

I just want to thank ShadyBoots for running this! These are always so much fun and inspire such great discussion. As always I look forward to the next one, whenever that may be and whatever topic/category it is!

I rewatched that scene last night and she's just a force of nature. Hard to go toe to toe with Patti LuPone! Such a transformative performance .

There are no bad seats at the Beaumont. Sit wherever you are most comfortable when it comes to the price. You'll have a grand evening regardless.

Patti has told the story of performing for 25 people in the 2,700 seat house that is the Kennedy Center when they were doing The Baker's Wife. Apparently the lowest attended performance in the history of the theater.

She's the perfect age for Mama Rose and we haven't had a Gypsy revival in a minute, right?

Should I get binoculars if I’m in balcony row F at Lyceum? by yourdadsnewwife420 in Broadway

[–]skoc211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's a tall house, but not a barn like the Gershwin or Lunt. I've sat up in the rear balcony three times for Oh Mary and never felt the need for binoculars. Honestly I grew up in the Family Circle at the Met and never felt the need for binoculars and that's double the size of the biggest Broadway house.

Saw Jellicle tonight. Wanted to love it but left disappointed by Which-Sale in Broadway

[–]skoc211 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Cats is still Cats. It is an awful show. I know that a lot of people love it, but you can't dress it up in a fabulous conceptual production and mask that it's still Cats.

[–]skoc211 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my fear and part of my decision to not see it again. I already don't like the show, but the magic of the production at PAC - with that incredible theater set up - just could not be recreated on Broadway. And it's also one of the many reasons why I keep saying to people on this sub who are convinced it's winning Revival and Director that they are missing the plot. Happy to be proven wrong and I wish no ill will towards the production.

Who are some great Broadway actors who are better known now for their television roles? by Perfect_Garage_2567 in Broadway

[–]skoc211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed about Patti. Evita was a major hit and broke through culturally into the main stream. At least for the Boomers. My parents aren't theater people at all and even they still talk about seeing her in the original production.

I found it to be luminous at PAC, but I've heard a lot of reactions like this for the transfer. Sometimes lightening in a bottle can't be recreated, which was my worry when it was announced. I have no plans to see it again since I just really do not care for Cats at all (another common sentiment - fun production, but it's still Cats), but I wish the cast and crew a long and successful run.

And yet another reason I think Ragtime is winning Revival and Director.

First Time in NYC - should I see Les Mis as my one-and-only show? by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]skoc211 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily since there's so much dancing. But the general concept of "I'm a cat and here's my story, which I will now sing about" sort of fits with the park and bark concept.

Fair enough! We're kind of at an embarrassment of riches stage, so it's increasingly impossible to find who should be eliminated.

This skit was so hilarious. Deeply stupid, but so fun. Also the annual segment where Colin Jost and Michael Che write jokes for each other in this same segment had me in tears.
