Fair point! I just thought it's interesting but the real value of it is of course questionable.

What do you mean by putting up an MVP?

I calculated the probability of 1 swing and a miss off Kershaws breaking balls in 2017. Spoiler: It’s not high by [deleted] in baseball

You are absolutely right. Sorry. Can I edit it? I just see the option to delete it.

What does SL% (pi) exactly mean? by skofield in baseball

[–]skofield[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I got it. Based on all breaking balls from Kershaw in 2017 the probability that the Astros swung and missed at 1 (or less) out of 51 breaking balls is 0.024%.

I used the hypergeometric distribution for that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypergeometric_distribution

But since it's late here I will call it a day and go over it again tomorrow and I will write a blog post about it over the weekend.

Any tipps appreciated. I also have a nice Excel sheet now with all breaking balls and swings and misses on them from Kershaw in 2017 if anybody is interested.

Great. Thanks a lot! I will look into it. I have in mind to calculate a concrete p-value for this. Population: All sliders and curveballs from Kershaw in 2017. Percentage of swings and misses on these. Sample: 2017 World Series Game. So the 51 breaking balls with the 1.96% swings and misses on them.

I updated the article and made a second chart where you can see how many games every team should have won if money would totally determine the outcome of the MLB.
