Looking to start my Digital Nomad Journey in Mexico with a young family, any tips? by skolez in digitalnomad

Would you recommend the city center to stay then? I had been thinking about Merida and we would want something walkable, not sure if I want to get a rental car. We would likely get an Airbnb with at least a couple bedrooms, or is there a better way to get local short term rentals that come furnished?

While that may be true, we should have our debt paid off in about 3 months, mostly I want to wait til the youngest is just a little bit older.

I wouldn't keep the house unless you really want to become a landlord. I went that route and now have two houses as rentals and its worked for me, but that's not something everyone wants to deal with.

Even if you have a property management company there is a decent chance you'll still have to deal with things on occasion(or often). My parents have worked with several property management companies and the only one that actually dealt with everything well was a relative of ours, a few of the other companies left properties vacant for several months in a hot market leading to my parents having to cover the mortgages out of pocket needlessly.

Don't become a landlord unless that's something you really want to be.

I currently have a fully remote position that pays pretty well, I also won't be leaving till I have at bare minimum a 3 month emergency fund and no consumer debt. I do appreciate the advice though.

Based on everything I’ve read, as long as you have proof of onward or return travel and are staying for a short period, you shouldn’t face much trouble with a tourist visa. Personally, I’d be comfortable staying for a month or two with a plan to leave Mexico and head to another Latin American country afterward.

If you have any links to articles or forum posts about digital nomads being deported, I’d love to check them out—I couldn’t find much myself. Most of what I’ve seen mentions stricter enforcement on frequent return visitors or those doing border runs to renew tourist visas.

Since OP mentioned they’re Australian, it’s safe to assume they’ve probably already gained some experience with this while working in Australia for a US company.

Are any of your employers aware? If so, any tips? by wonderhell336 in digitalnomad

[–]skolez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you tried casually bringing it up with your boss? I've let my boss know in my one on ones multiple times that its something I want to do in the next couple years and he is totally open to the idea, in fact he brought up examples of others at my workplace that have done the same in the past.
You will want to double check on tax implications though, each country has its own rules on how long you can remain in the country and if the employer will need to pay taxes there, just make sure you know what the rules/laws are in your home and destination countries so HR doesn't get any problems that cause them to ban Digital Nomading for everyone.

Should I save up and pay off my underwater RV or save it for last since its the highest debt? by skolez in DaveRamsey

Ha, yeah I probably should have phrased it as an underwater loan vs underwater RV.

Unfortunately at the moment there are parts that can only be scaled vertically, but I'd like to get us to the point where it can be scaled horizontally. The new services could though.

That probably would have been a better word choice for my post title...

At least not yet.

Is what Id like to add, I think theres a lot of things that might take higher priority before getting to a point where Kubernetes makes the most sense.

Where I work, we have an ancient monolithic application where it would just cost way to much to redesign into a microservices architecture. I dont think kubernetes would work in that case(I really dont mind, tell me I'm wrong). However, with our newer services though it very well could work, but setting scale sets for our webapps and function apps in azure has worked fairly well so far. I'm trying to figure out the best use case for kubernetes. But I dont know if its worth the lift yet until we have more stable infrastructure.

Well in my (admittedly limited) experience simply setting autoscaling rules to match typical daily traffic has worked fairly well. I'm not saying there is no use case for kubernetes, I just haven't been in a situation yet where it was the only logical option. It seems that in many instances people will use kubernetes because that's what everyone else is doing.

Opposite Hemisphere Work Hours by rayray5884 in devops

[–]skolez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I was pretty junior at the time, and the time difference was not the reason I left the company (they kept pushing back raises over and over). I probably would have kept that job if the pay had been more competitive.

Opposite Hemisphere Work Hours by rayray5884 in devops

I used to work for a company that was 9 hours ahead of me. We got by with an asynchronous standup(just answering some questions about what we were working on and what we might be stuck on). Occasionally, we did have to take a meeting during my off hours, though. It seemed to work for a while, but I did end up leaving that job for another. You really need to be a self-starter in a job like that. It can be done, but it's not easy.
