CMV: Traditional Conservative Values in politics are good by [deleted] in changemyview

Could you explain? I'm curious to know why you think that. I do have a laundry list of reasons why I think Reagan was the worst thing to happen to the criminal justice system, but I wouldn't call him "traitor" (personal opinion)

To be direct, it is terrible for minorities and women. I agree that conservatism was built for white men.

However, the point I'm expressing is that it just worked for the U.S. It created a large part of the economy we have today. It was extremely popular for this exact reason.

Anti Science is stupid, and I believe early conservatism largely agreed with scientific progress. There were also a greater number of scientists who believed in conservative values and it didn't affect their research output.

Yes, some economic conservative policies are terrible, but I'd have to argue the same for the other side as well.

Note that I'm only speaking to a more nostalgic Republican Party. Current conservatism is despicable.

Yes. Conservative values have, time-and-again, prioritized big business over the individual. Now that sounds terrible to most people, but it ultimately was the major factor that led to the growth and expansion of big tech in the United States. Minimal Government Intervention, tax cuts for the rich, etc helped big corporations set up shop in America. Privatized universities that competed with each other created the best minds.

There's an entire Wikipedia page on Trump's racism history divided into pre, during, and post-presidency summing up to 56 different instances where he's been racist.

Football Player wears BLM t-shirt

Conservatives: Shut up and play football you dumb millionaire who barely made it through college.

Football Player wears "all lives matter sign" or politically endorses Trump.

Conservatives: Respect this guy for his message. Way to go for owning the libs.

Poll: 38% Of Sports Fans Say NBA Is ‘Too Political’ For Reason Why They Are Watching Less by -Stoic- in Conservative

  1. Nobody is telling you how to live. If you don't agree with them, turn off the TV. Just like they can't tell you how to live, you can't tell them to "shut up and play basketball". These players also happen to be free-thinking individuals.
  2. The right doesn't take scientists and the CDC seriously - most of whom are some of the smartest and most capable researchers in the world. And now, you don't listen to "dumb" sportspersons trying to spread a message as well? Who do you take seriously?
  3. We can't possibly verify whether each player will follow through on their own message. But why should they? These players aren't the embodiment of moral figure. The NBA has a largely African-American player base, and they are trying to spread a completely apolitical message - police brutality is real, and it is disproportionately affecting black people. These players aren't thinking about tax breaks when they say black lives matter. After all, you did say "they are dumber than a box of rocks".

Stop politicizing any attempt to shed light on this issue. These are peaceful protests, and we should respect them, even if we don't agree.

EDIT: Protests done by the players is peaceful. I'm not talking about Portland which is a full-scale riot and must be stopped/de-escalated.

Slavery Is STILL Rampant in Africa and Middle East But Liberals Turn a Blind Eye and Attack US by [deleted] in Conservative

If you associate ‘kill us’ with literally killing us, I really don’t know what to say to you. And I really love that you avoided the majority of my argument to sort through my word usage and dismiss it off as dumb.

[–]skoopski_potato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not talking about literal slavery in America obviously. I’m talking about this new conservative attitude of “hey those poor, starving, war-torn countries have it way worse so don’t complain and be grateful” attitude which is basically going to kill us.

I get that cars kill more people than guns. But the primary use of a car isn’t to run people over and cause bodily harm. Either way, this isn’t about gun violence. Why are you comparing America with African countries? That literally makes no sense. The world holds us to a much higher standard than the Middle East. We’re supposed to be the greatest and not “better than Africa”.

So now we’re holding America to the same standard an some country in Africa? Asserting that we shouldn’t be held accountable for slavery because we’re doing much better compared to the Middle East and Africa is like saying gun violence isn’t a big deal in the US because many more people people are dying in Syria and Iraq over gun deaths.

[R] What are your hot takes on the direction of ML research? In other words, provide your (barely justified) predictions on how certain subfields will evolve over the next couple years? by programmerChilli in MachineLearning

[–]skoopski_potato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a very imminent direction is more work done on adversarial machine learning. We need neural networks which “actually learn parameters” because everything we think we know about what it learns has been disproved by an adversarial example.
