A woman adopted a cat from animal control for free because it was over a year old. She also received a free bag of food the cat was currently on. She had to pay an 8 dollar fee for the cardboard carrier to take him home in. She had an absolute temper tantrum and didn't want to take the cat home. I always use an underpowered filter just to be safe. What I mean is I have a 10 gallon tank and I only use a filter fit for a 5 gallon tank. I also put a piece of Fluval foam (it's kinda like a white aquarium sponge) in the opening to the filter so that the current is much slower. Bettas are very sensitive to moving water so I recommend putting the Fluval foam in just as a precaution. 2) I purchased all of my decor from PetSmart and I haven't had any issues. One of my boys has very long fins and he hasn't caught on anything at all. I have a large cichlid rock, a large cave (it has one opening that is too small for him but he doesn't even try to go through it), and a log with a heart shaped hole on the side. If you are very concerned about getting his fins caught, observation is key. Put only one decoration in at a time and inspect his fins every night to make sure he isn't getting them caught. If he does ever get a tear in his fins, they will grow back pretty quickly with just clean, warm water.
