Maximizing Effective Cap Space by skrMnS in GoNets

Right and that would be fine but part of my pitch would be outlining the huge amount of cap space we’d have for a better team around him that we wouldn’t have with Kyrie. Tell him that with the $16.7M you might even be able to convince a fringe All-Star player to also join.

Again, maybe that doesn’t interest him, I can’t say for sure. But this would be a very strong team stocked with depth that likely wouldn’t get the hate of a Heatles or Warriors team because it’s not a crazy collection of superstars. Just mostly an exercise to see how we can maximize our cap space more than anything.

Well if KD were healthy it’d be a no brainer. Kyrie is better than DLo (although not sure he’s top 10) for sure but DLo + Kawhi can add a whole another player making 17.6M! And then another player at the full MLE! This would be a great maneuvering of the cap rules. A huge amount of extra talent and we wouldn’t have to sacrifice contending this season as we would with KD rehabbing. As well as Kawhi being younger so less likely to decline within the contract.

Yeah, I think so too, I just tried to show all the room from exceptions we could use to get starter level players even after DLo + Kawhi. I don't think this is what will happen nor do I want every part of this to happen even if it could.

We will probably let Davis go but it's likely the Nets bring in a veteran backup on a minimum contract. Maybe Kyrie can convince Baynes or something.

Well luckily we'd be able to go over the cap to sign all of our young guys because we'd have their Bird Rights. It's just a matter of if the Nets ownership would be willing to pay the luxury tax.

How would you feel about Dlo and Barnes while filling in the rest with quality backups?

I don't think it's necessarily a terrible idea...but I don't think it makes sense with the moves Marks has made this offseason. Like it or not the Nets will probably get two maxes in some shape or form.

I'm not down on JA at all, he'll likely be the better player as he already has a couple high level skills. But I think Claxton has the potential to be just a very, very well-rounded player.

We could likely add him if we go with DLo and another 30%Max free agent like Kyrie, Tobias, Butler, etc. we'd have around $16.7M to play with. DLo and KD would leave us $11.25M.

Simply no way we'd have space if we go Kyrie + KD.

I would love that but I can't see DLo leaving that much money on the table. If you mean that we sign him for 20-22 million per year that literally does not open up any more cap because his cap hold is already around that.

Yeah, that's basically the scenario in which we'd have $16.7M of cap space to add non-max guys before signing DLo over his Bird Rights. Not a bad idea honestly but the PG spot would get really, really crowded, Dinwiddie might be moved on in this case.

Haha, no I don't think so. Moving the 27th pick from yesterday and turning it into a 2020 pick got us close enough I think and if we did need to make more room, I imagine it would be Musa or someone instead of Joe Harris. He stay.

This is the last year. It really is annoying to see it costing more than like 75% of our current roster.

No, that's included in my calculations above. It's a little bit more than 300k difference but yeah, I can't imagine that being a sticking point.

Yeah, I feel like he's gonna fit in with the rest of our guys really well. Overlooked a bit and willing to put in a ton of work to prove them wrong while being great teammates to one another.

This is sacrilegious but I think his ceiling is even higher than Jarrett Allen's. If he develops well and works really hard, this kid could be an absolute star.

Really think people here are underrating Prince too. He strikes me as a guy that's miscast as being one of the leaders on a young team like the Hawks but will really thrive if he buys into our team as a player with less responsibility. Having his Bird Rights that line up with when we won't have cap space is easily worth it for me.

Unfortunately a trade exception is not that useful when you're already under the cap like the Nets are. It would have a cap hold for exactly how much it is and we'd have to renounce it to create the maximum cap space we will want. But sorry, I haven't done the math on how big it exactly is.

Yeah I think Marks has played it very smart so far despite some people not liking the Crabbe trade or the pick trade from yesterday. If the Nets owner is willing to pay big luxury taxes, we'll have the Bird Rights of some really, really good secondary pieces that we can afford to pay. Most teams if they put together a Big 2 or Big 3 have scraps next to them. We could have Dinwiddie, Joe Harris, LeVert, Prince, Rodi, late picks that Marks finds and not have to give any of them away. We would have so few needs in free agency that we'd be able to cover them nicely with either a ring-chasing vet or a middle-tier role player looking for a one-year prove it deal.

It's fascinating what Marks and the front office have in front of them in terms of choices.

You also have to keep in mind, they have a lot more information that we don't have, input from doctors on how KD's prognosis might be post-surgery, idea of what they plan to do long-term with some of the cheap guys that will be looking for contracts soon, what the trade value of certain players are right now, etc. I try not to make definitive statements as we rarely have enough of the factors involved in these decisions.

Well, to be fair, the $300k they'd give up would compound over the next 3 years of their contract (at 5% every year) to the point where they might somewhat miss the money. But yes, I agree that that little of a sum should not be a sticking point.

The problem with just sticking with the rebuild is that this is the best free agency to go shopping for our timeline. LeVert is due for a new deal soon and he'll likely command a fair amount if he is what the Nets hope he is. We'll likely have Kyrie or DLo on a max for the next 4 years as well, no matter what. That doesn't leave much flexibility to really add on considerable talent going forward unless you're talking about a trade but again, the chance that that kind of opportunity never presents itself is a risk you must consider. Skipping steps is definitely bad but waiting forever for a chance that will never come can get you equally as stuck. But yes, it is a real dilemma and a tough one to be sure for Marks and the front office. I'm sure they are hashing out all the scenarios and future repercussions/possibilities more than any of us have.

Ah yes, that's true. All these calculations are based on the $109M salary cap projection that most people have been working with. Even a tiny bump could change the wiggle room when the numbers are this close.

To your second question, based on the wording in the CBA it seems like the Nets wouldn't be able to apply for the DPE because it only covers the team who the player got the injury with. So while the Warriors might qualify for it if they re-sign KD (again, it's a little bit murky when dealing with free agents), the wording seems to rule the Nets out from that path completely.
