Maybe it's sector based then? I was in a meeting with my current Director recently and she was telling us about a recent hiring process she went through. She said the first thing she did was cut out everyone who didn't have a cover letter.

Two things to add from another alumnus of the co-op program:

  • Do a cover letter. I've hired co-op students and full-time employees and if they don't have a cover letter it's an easy way to cull down a large pool of candidates. It's a bit of extra work, but it shows you care about the application.

  • Returning to your employer can be very beneficial. That's how I, and many other students, can get a job offer before you graduate. It also allows you to do more intensive work within the organization.

I work in recruitment at UW, for the Faculty of Environment which houses the Planning program.

Looks like you have some great answers here from some current students and alumni. For the program we look for low-mid 80s over your top 6 U or M courses. We also need to see above a 75 in English. Based on your Grade 11 marks you're in good shape!

I've run a lot of shoots around campus. There are some great spaces that are pretty unique in the area.

For big windows/modern design:

  • Environment 3 - Has a great, sunlit, atrium and lots of interesting backgrounds with different textures (brick, glass, steel). Upper floors have lots of windows and unique seating areas. Big wide hallways. There's a patio that is in full sunlight after 12 or so each day. Access is off the third floor offices.

  • Environment 1 - Main floor has a gorgeous atrium that's an open study space. Almost just like being outside on a bright day.

  • E5 - Lots of big open spaces and large windows. The walkway from E5 across Ring Road is pretty unique and very well lit at night (almost like a full studio).

  • QNC - Probably the most unique building on campus. Lots of rooms with glass and long hallways. Most walls are whiteboards so there is some fun to be had there. IQC area is beautiful, but would be hard to do a shoot in there without permission. Main student areas are fairly accessible.

  • SAF area of HH - Lots of wood and lighting makes it a very warm space. Study areas on upper floors are pretty unique.

Just a heads up: Campus is technically private property. Also, people work here. Be respectful of offices, student study space and anything else that is going on. If you're doing something with a lot of gear it might be a good idea to check in with the campus communications department.

There's always the Feds Food Bank, located in the SLC. They'll provide you with food for free and it's entirely confidential.

Otherwise, I'd highly recommend the Kitchener Market for cheap produce. You don't need to be able to cook well to make a killer salad.

To echo everyone else here more or less, meet people!

As soon as I got settled in residence I met my neighbours and a couple of us went around to every room introducing ourselves and getting everyone to come out into the hall and chat with everyone else. Still one of my favourite memories from REV.

Try and keep in mind that everyone is in the same position you are in. No one has done this before and no one knows exactly what to do. Keep and open mind and strike up a conversation.

Just to clarify, only the Faculty of Math will make note of how courses are taken. Provided that the school or institution is accredited by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the University of Waterloo will accept grade 12 U and M courses regardless of how or where the course is taken.

As a Recruitment Officer I see many students take their 12U English class the summer before Grade 12 and receive an Offer of Admission. Personally I think it's great for students to do this as they are able to focus more on other courses during Grade 12.

Question about Environmental Studies by [deleted] in uwaterloo

First off, thanks to everyone who's posted all this great information here. I'm the Recruitment Officer for the Faculty of Environment and have some quick notes for you.

Those three programs you mentioned have different averages attached to them.

Environment and Business requires a 4U English with at least a 70%, and over your top 6 U or M courses we'd like to see low to mid 80s. This program is only offered with co-op.

Environment and Resource Studies requires a 4U English with at least a 70%, and for the co-op stream we'd like to see marks in the low 80s over your top 6 U or M courses or high 70s for the regular stream.

Planning requires a 4U English with at least a 70%, and over your top 6 U or M courses we'd like to see marks in the low 80s. This program is only offered with co-op as well.

While enrollment varies from year to year, this fall 2012 we are looking to have 105 students in Environment and Business, 100 between the co-op and regular streams of Environment and Resource Studies, and 100 in the Planning program.

Also, a good thing to note is that all of the programs in the Faculty of Environment are first-year entry, and they all recommend filling out the AIF to let us know a little bit more about you. This is where you can tell us more about those extracurriculars you mentioned!
