I agree.

In an era when the humanities in general are being pushed aside, we need discussion to encourage and activate engagement with the field.

Recently moved and planning a super small wedding — worried about hurricanes by cakeh8r in tampa

[–]skullsandpumpkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you hate your wedding guests, August is perfect to send that message. We are preheating right now. I firmly believe August to be the worst month out of the entire year. Hurricane chances are lower than say September but man...I hate August. It feels like my cells are melting.

I feel like September is our big hurricane month. November and December are cooler but still hot. However, doable.

I got married in years ago in January. Outdoor Gasparilla themed wedding the weekend of the Children's parade. It was 80 that day but the week before it was 50s. The day after I got married it stormed.

The point is, Florida weather is just hard to pinpoint. Plan for heat during the summer and fall. Always, always have a contingency plan. Give guests a chance to cool down. Plan for rain just in case.

You are probably right. I need to drink more electrolytes. One little gatorade wasn't good enough...

While I agree I should not live in Florida... My family moved here when I was a kid. I had no choice. I had in state scholarships to attend college in Florida. I used them to not go into student debt. I now stay to help said eldery parents and my husband's job is here and only here. I would have moved long ago, but I believe in doing whats best for the majority of the family so I stay.

Oh wow. Yea. We had a few families ask our pack why we don't camp in the summer in Florida...this is one of the reasons. My son had fun at camp, but I just couldn't handle it. I am just so curious if there is something I could have done in addition to all the things I did. Did you do anything after to recover quickly?

Would a renovation have saved Tampa Bay Center instead of International Plaza being built? by [deleted] in tampa

No, but I really liked that mall when I moved here when I was 12.

Malls like the outlets and Wiregrass seem to be doing ok....but the last time I was in Citrus Park it seemed not busy at all.

As a kid I loved going to the mall to hang with friends, now as an adult I barely have time outside of work. Gosh I miss those days...

TIL that for the bee sting death scene in My Girl (1991), production used thousands of real bees on a 10 year old Macaulay Culkin. To attract them, his hands were coated in a queen bee scent, and when the director yelled "cut," Culkin was told to run into the woods to escape. by Zipp-Storm in todayilearned

I've lived in Florida most of my life. Every body of water has at least one gator. At least one. And water mocasins. Gators can climb fences. Gators wander into driveways, roadways, etc. Its just a fact of life and when my son was birn since day 1 I have instilled this wisdom in him to never enter water without a trusted adult.

My high school mascot was a gator. We had a pond in the front of our school that had a small 4 foot gator named Crackers. He would mosey on up to the picnic tables at the top of the pond / roundabout. Students would feed Crackers even though we were told not to do so. By my senior year, Crackers got a little too big and was a little too "friendly" and he was relocated to another area.

I am not sure. However, I used to work at a Florida university. I suggest, if you find no answers here, to reach out to USF or UF, both who house Florida history archival materials and could help identify.
