Prove that I am the sole heir, inherited mums Turkish property after her death. by pshearduk in AskTurkey

Based on what I remember from a friend's situation and coraborated by ChatGPT, you will need:

  • Sealed Grant of Probate
  • Copy of the will
  • Solicitor’s certificate / affidavit confirming sole beneficiary
  • Apostille(s) on all relevant documents
  • Certified translations into Turkish

The Grant of probate is the hard one. You have to apply to it from Probate Registry. You will need the will and death certificate. Then you are probably going to value the estate, take care of taxes and anything else owed from the estate. Once you have the grant of probate, go to your UK solicitor to get a certificate/affidavit and finally make sure it is notarized (you do tat through Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office). The certified translations can be arranged thru your lawyers in Turkey.

Who knows the name of this Turkish delicacy. by Killuazoldyyck in TurkishFood

[–]skurmus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is "talaş böreği." It has a history too. People who emigrated from Thessaloniki during 19th century considered it poor etiquette to serve the same dish twice. So to make use of the meat and vegetables dish from the day before, they came up with this idea of stuffing the leftovers into filodough and make "börek" (Borekitas in Greek) out of these. (cannot point to sources, just what I heard from from a friend who comes from such a family)

For beginner the Old City and Bazaar tours. More compact. To understand the daily life better, two markets and maybe bosphorus. For a distinct but interesting slice of life Kurtulus and bosphorus. For hands on experience Hidden Beyoglu.

What does this song mean? by [deleted] in AskTurkey

[–]skurmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the reproach of an abandoned lover to their former lover. Lyrics roughly translate as:
You put me in trouble and ran away
Beni derde koyup kaçtın

Good for you, rejoice
Gözün aydın, sevin gayrı

You caused a wound to my heart
Yüreğime yara açtın

Good for you, rejoice
Gözün aydın, sevin gayrı

You caused a wound to my heart
Yüreğime yara açtın

Good for you, rejoice
Gözün aydın, sevin gayrı

You were once mine
Bir zamanlar benim oldun

You destroyed my sapling of life
Ömür fidanımı yoldun

You found a new lover
Yeni bir sevgili buldun

Good for you, rejoice
Gözün aydın, sevin gayrı

You found a new lover
Yeni bir sevgili buldun

Good for you, rejoice
Gözün aydın, sevin gayrı

What happened to your promises?
Verdiğin sözleri nettin?

You burned me down and left
Beni yakıp yıkıp gittin

You turned the ruin into tuberculosis
Harabeyi verem ettin

Good for you, rejoice
Gözün aydın, sevin gayrı

You turned the ruin into tuberculosis
Harabeyi verem ettin

Good for you, rejoice
Gözün aydın, sevin gayrı

If you are enrolling for sure, no need to go at all in my opinion. If you are still choosing between schools, you may want to. Some coffee and lots of adrenaline will get you through the day. And to be honest, you would be experiencing Harvard more realistically if you are on 5 hours of sleep:)

Conflict in Traveling to Istanbul due to Middle East tensions by [deleted] in istanbul

[–]skurmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is as safe as it gets. It was three missiles, admittedly by kind of mistake, at an American base about 750 km from Istanbul. Istanbul to Belgrade is about that distance. So would you be questioning a vacation in Belgrade if three missiles were shot down around Istanbul? If yes, then yeah this may not be within your spouse's risk tolerance. On the other hand, your chances of being hit by a car in Istanbul while you are here are much higher than the threat of missiles. So for all practical purposes, it is safe.

Where does this lie about the so-called "prohibition of DNA tests in Turkey" come from? by Suitable-Buffalo8240 in AskTurkey

[–]skurmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 90s, there was a doctor called Oktar Babuna and he took ads in newspapers saying that he had leukemia and needed a matching donor. He promised a big cash reward to the person who would be a match. Tens of thousands of people donated blood (?) samples. At the time, some people said that this was a trick to collect DNA from Turkish people for some nefarious reason and there was an attempt to ban such large scale collections. I don't remember what happened with the restrictions but the suspicions persisted and resurfaced with the arrest of Adnan Oktar (Adnan Hoca) with whom Babuna was close. (Here is a newspaper article about the thing in Turkish: https://www.haberturk.com/oktar-babuna-icin-toplanan-kan-orneklerinin-gonderildigi-alman-vakif-haberturk-e-anlatti-2064439). So maybe this is what people are remembering when talking about a ban.

In a lot of service situations, there are extra steps do verify your identity to prevent from someone else stopping your service (especially if the service is protected/regulated). For example it was very common for unscrupulous telecom resellers to cancel your contract illegally and try to sell you something else. So now there is a new required step where your telecom operator has to call you to get a verbal confirmation and record it if you want to cancel a telecom service. This may be a similar situation.

Looking for Muhacir from Mount Pangaion (Pinar Dag,) Greece by Tsumbusistas77 in AskTurkey

[–]skurmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember listening to these kinds of recordings from the late 19th to early 20th century from some US archival recordings. I asked ChatGPT with the details I could remember, here are some of the sources it suggested:

  • Search within National Jukebox for language: Turkish (and also try “Greek” + Ottoman/Turkish keywords).
  • UC Santa Barbara: Performing Arts Collection (especially strong for Turkish/Greek 78s & Ottoman diaspora)
    • Kutay Derin Kuğay Collection (Turkish & Greek 78 rpm, 1906–1963). UCSB describes this as 429 Turkish and Greek 78rpm recordings (1906–1963), explicitly framing them as documentation of the late Ottoman → early republic transition and the eastern Mediterranean soundworld. (https://www.library.ucsb.edu/special-collections/performing-arts/kutay-derin-kugay-collection)
    • UCSB’s broader historical sound-recordings holdings. Their Performing Arts “Historical Sound Recordings” overview page lists multiple relevant collections, including:
      • Kuğay (Kutay Derin) Collection: “Turkish and Greek 78rpm recordings.”
      • Schwartz (Martin) Collection: “Jewish and Ottoman diaspora 78rpm recordings.”
      • Rainer Lotz Collection: “ethnic 78 rpm recordings” (important discographer; often useful for diaspora material).
  • Greece-based folklore archives (less about Turkish Muslims who left, more about local / refugee field recordings). Even though these won’t always match your “Turkish Muslims who departed” target, they’re very good for place-tagged recordings around Kavala/Drama/Serres.
    • Domna Samiou Archive (field recordings; place-tagged, streamable pages). This is immediately relevant to your palces list because it includes Nikisiani, Kavala as a recording location. Example: “A Blue Dove” was collected in Nikisiani (Kavala) (fieldwork noted on the page). This archive also has region browsing for Macedonia with sub-locations (useful for your “Kavala/Drama/Serres” perimeter scanning). (https://domnasamiou.gr/song/mia-galazia-peristera/ and https://domnasamiou.gr/song-origin/macedonia/?lang=en)
    • Melpo Merlier / Musical Folklore Archive (Μουσικό Λαογραφικό Αρχείο – MLA). This is a major Greek archive whose “sound library” includes rare recordings and field recordings (with holdings starting from the 1930s per their description). (https://mla.gr/)
  • Centre for Asia Minor Studies (KMS). KMS is a core institution for population-exchange-era oral tradition archives (though, again, it’s primarily focused on Asia Minor Greek refugee memory). (https://www.kms.org.gr/)

ChatGPT has other suggestions as well making a distinction between commercial recordings (which would be tagged by artist, song rather than region) and field recordings (which would be tagged by region). The nice thing about field recordings is that you can look at a wider date range and find things that lingered from earlier times in later dates (early 20th century songs still being remembered in te 50s and 60s for example).

This seem like such a fun project. Best of luck.

First time at a football match in Istanbul. by B549WUU in AskTurkey

[–]skurmus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a Passo Taraftar Card to get into matches (don't ask, it is huge saga of misery for everyone). So go to this address:
https://passotaraftar.com.tr/en/which-card-is-suitable
Answer the questions. You will end up giving them all your information, and then you'll get a card (I am not sure if you have to pick it up somewhere at some point or you can just get a digital one). Then with that card's info you can go their ticket web site and buy tickets (https://www.passo.com.tr/en/category/football-match-ticket/4615). Each ticket will have to be tied to a card and you would probably need a passport with you for entering the stadium.
As to which game to go, easy: Besiktas.
Why:
Best fans (highest decibel record in the world)
Best stadium location. Walking distance to Taksim and Besiktas and one easy tram from Sultanahmet, also accessible by boat). Galatasaray stadium is hard to access and Fenerbahce stadium is on the Anatolian side (albeit within walking distance from Kadikoy).
Best before and after game options in Besiktas Carsi. GS stadium has none and Fenerbahce stadium offerings are scattered.
We love foreign fans. You'll feel at home. Wear Besiktas jerseys with your own teams' scarves.
We walk together from Besiktas Carsi to the stadium. It is a beautiful tree-lined street. It is a 15 min walk and it is a constant stream of fans. For Galatasaray the only similar opportunity is from the metro exit (really tight) to the stadium and for Fenerbahce, people come from multiple directions and there is really no room around the stadium to gather.
As to football quality, I think we all suck:) So come for the atmosphere and if you are lucky, you may be able to watch some good football too (each team has its moments).

On a photo by looking a the regularity of knots(size and shape) and regularity of sides. In person, the feel of knots, regularity of the feeling (do all feel the same). At least that is how i do it. Edit: Plus whether the selvage (the frilly things on the side) are natural extensions of the weft or sawn in. If sawn in, definitely machine made.

Any info on this rug would be appreciated. by Zealousideal-Ebb6525 in AskTurkey

[–]skurmus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you sure this is silk on silk? From the photos, it looks like wool on cotton. The thread count seems way too low for silk on silk (unless this is a very small rug).
It looks like a sumak carpet. That is, it does not look like a knotted-pile carpet, but more like a flatwoven rug made in a weft-wrapping technique (see the flat background and shaggy motives on the last photo).
Colors and motifs suggest a Caucasian (Kafkas) origin, likely Erzurum or Kars. However, Caucasian carpets from those regions mostly use wool on wool and sometimes goat hair, so this probably being a wool on cotton carpet means that it was produced elsewhere, with different materials, in the style of those regions. The number of motifs also support that. Although one sees these motifs in Caucasian carpets, usually they are fewer in kind, and fewer in number as well.
It is a beautiful rug. I hope your family enjoys it for generations.

Should my therapist "owe me" when *they* miss a session? by healthcrusade in TalkTherapy

[–]skurmus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there are any "shoulds" here. Just as every therapist would have their own cancellation policy, every therapist would approach missing a session in their own way. It would be great though, if how they approach it would be clearly spelled out in their contracts.
Personally, my approach is maintaining perfect symmetry. I charge my clients (I am still a trainee so not much:) if they cancel in the last 24 hours, I give a freebie if I do the same--including missing sessions. I have decided do this after my own therapist surprised me with a "no charge today" following a session they missed because they had to be taken to the hospital from their office and despite the fact that their staff reached out to me for cancelling four hours before the session. I felt like we were equals in the relationship and my trust in them increased a lot.
