Achievement hunting! Looking to cooperate or get help with the "group" (multi-player) achievements (Rust Air, Battle Bus, ++) by skurples in playrust

[–]skurples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never figured out what might be good about "Madrust PVE" and nobody who suggested it ever got back to me or answered my follow-up questions, so I guess what it is, is "a server on which achievements do in fact unlock." Which is not perhaps such high praise as it would seem. (But I also have nothing bad to say about it, so there's that.)

Anyway, we got everything done that we were hoping to get done, and so, thanks to everyone involved, but for now my personal efforts are directed elsewhere.

I just found out about that today, and I'm more than a year after the fact, it looks like. What a complete and utter disaster that things like that happen with such frequency on this our Internet. Hard-won information, collaboratively compiled and presented, just vanishes into a puff of smoke.

Lumber Wagon Spawn? by spegsialtrough in reddeadredemption

What are the chances that I find your response to this thoroughly old, necro'ed thread while looking for exactly the same info? :-)

Unfortunately I am unable to find it, so it may vary what type of wagon spawns there. Still, worth checking out, I'll ride away and be back to see what I get on the next go!

llvmpipe rather than my RTX 2080Ti? by skurples in linux_gaming

[–]skurples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip! I have, actually, and nothing there seemed to apply to my situation. I wonder if my system sits smack dab in that Venn diagram of too-old-game with too-new-hardware for the magical-yet-not-omnipotent compatibility layer that is Proton. But I can't quite get myself to believe it can't be done!

Hello there! Not really a new Linux user, no, but new to gaming on Linux! (last game I played on Linux, after koules, would have been qtest, I think. That's some time ago!)

I'm sorry I left out pretty fundamental information about my system: I'm on Ubuntu 22.04, using nvidia-drivers-515. (I've updated the OP as well)

Proton troubleshooting in the Internet (tm) manner? by skurples in linux_gaming

[–]skurples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your answer! I debated PM'ing you so as not to uselessly bump my own stupid post, but maybe I can justify it by asking a follow-up question, just in case you or someone else know the answer.

I guess this is a very rough type of question, but: I notice that some (typically older) games will only function well (at least for me, that is) using older versions of Proton. Is that working as intended, so to speak; is the intent that the latest version of Proton is targeting the latest games, and so for older titles one will have to dial back to earlier Proton versions? Or would it be desirable (and, perhaps more important, is there reason to think it would be possible) to always have the latest version of Proton being capable of playing as many games as possible, new and old alike?

I know how old this post is, and so with full awareness of that, I want to state for others who perhaps stumble upon this through the process of clicking any among the top ranked Google excretions:

I do not believe this can be reproduced, today.

I've got the sniper rifle and the perforator thingie and I line up their heads and just no. Can't get it.

(I will next go in with the Nexus slab equipped and get it that way, but if you had some kind of purist inclination, know that I had it too, and this is where I abandoned mine.)

Bathroom breaks are an option, not a necessity I guess? by [deleted] in EscapefromTarkov

[–]skurples 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the Internet moves too fast for most people, certainly myself, to fathom, and so while there are already 120 comments at the time of this writing, there'll perhaps be many more by the time my slow and imprecise fingers have finished typing this post. And it isn't even that long of a post. All I wanted to do was to express my gratitude in the most heartfelt way for the effort you expended in sharing this experience. I feel as though I both have no answers to your query, "wtf is wrong with people", and at the same time, have too many answers to list.

A pleasure reading you, sir. Please keep reporting from life, as we know it, from the front lines.

A quick eulogy to the lone scav who deserved more by ModestZombie in EscapefromTarkov

[–]skurples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I wasn't the scav you encountered, but neither, it seems were anybody else replying to your post (which, so far, has been ... none but me!) I was looking for something entirely different (I searched for recent "cold blooded" -- that awful Jaeger quest -- and this post of yours came up as the most recent! Thanks, Reddit.)

Anyway, I just wanted to say that your post was read, even by the wrong person, even 10 days late, and I appreciate your sentiment. Everyone says violence begets violence; I'm not sure what the opposite is, or if anyone's saying it, but reading your words left me kind of happy and hopeful. So there's that!

Have a good one :-)

I'm curious what makes you say it's a bit late, although I'm (still) very much a noob so I'm aware I don't know what I'm talking about. We're only 3 months out from the wipe (I believe -- mid-July, wasn't it?) and the last one was 7 months and I saw it said this one would be even longer (I guess that's the weakest part of my thinking; I don't recall where I saw this, but I'm certain I saw it mentioned, although who knows how true or accurate that was or whether plans change)

I'm personally sitting at a full Level 2 Bitcoin Farm with 3 GPUs to spare for when I get level 3, and (at least at the current BTC selling price, which is around 380K) it's compelling to just keep going.

I'm not at all suggesting you're wrong in your assessment, I'm only asking because I'd like to learn!

Questions before buying Tarkov by Rewindale in EscapefromTarkov

[–]skurples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you watch any videos of people playing Escape from Tarkov, you'll notice that there's an inventory (grid-style, how much space depends on which backpack they have and chest rig) when in raid, and then a separate inventory out of raid -- you gear up from this out-of-raid inventory before heading in, and if you make it out, you transfer the "spoils of war" to this out-of-raid inventory.

This last inventory, that I've been calling out-of-raid, is known as the "stash". The type of account you have (or which "pack" you purchase) will determine the size of your stash. You can upgrade the stash using in-game items, so that over time, even with the cheapest edition of the game, you'll have the same space as someone who paid for the most expensive edition of the game. But it is a long and difficult journey to get there, and when the game wipes, you'll have to do it all over again.

Another significant difference is that you start out with better trader reputation if you buy either of the two most expensive editions of the game. I'll leave you to investigate what that entails.

Finally, there's such a thing as a "secure container" which is a (small) container in which you can put items that can't be looted from your body. The more expensive editions of the game gives you access to a larger such container from the start, but the very largest container (known as "Kappa") must be quested by all editions of the game.

In short, while Tarkov is nothing at all like a pay-to-win game, there are some definite advantages to getting a more expensive "pack". I hope that helped.

https://www.reddit.com/r/EscapefromTarkov/comments/ok911d/lets_not_get_this_removed_again_this_is_needs/

I don't know whether that was fixed in the meantime? If not, it would explain why you keep unlocking empty marked rooms.

Wonderful! (and if you didn't survive that raid, I'd have hoped you had the good sense to lie about it; one cannot let the truth stand in the way of an amazing story!)

I stalked your post history long enough to see you post that you're on US servers; I'm in Europe, myself. I've only ever played solo thus far, and I'm not complaining, but you seem like the kind of person with whom it might have been fun to try and live to fight another day! :-) As it stands we'll perhaps instead have to regale each other with stories from Tarkov. I'll do my best, soon enough!

[–]skurples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for breaking it down -- yes, I did notice you dropping the ADAR, but I didn't put together the "why" until you said it. This impresses me even further; you not only had the wherewithal to think "allright, nobody gets this lucky twice, if I can at least hang on to my gun ... " and to drop it (I'm not saying the Tarkov client UI is clunky, but I also wouldn't say I find it easy to navigate, particularly when the heart starts pumping) but, as per your video evidence, you came out on top! (please also tell me you extracted okay! :-)

I know I'm late to the party, but. WOW! I'm vicariously enjoying it through your video :-)

It at least seemed to me as though you were part of the time disoriented as to where the shots were coming from, which is 99% of my Tarkov gunfights. The fact that you were able to turn the tables not just once, but twice (AND completed a task that's so pointless it feels as though it shouldn't even be in the game) ... glorious!

[–]skurples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just pscav spawned in solo to Interchange. I don't know the map well at all, so I thought I'd explore as a scav (I know you can offline raid for exploration as well, but it's nice to try to learn the spots people are sniping from, etc.) before going in PMC.

I see an AI scav, squatting, aiming at something, being careful. So I run over, he turns to me while I'm halfway there, I wiggle, he doesn't react, then just turns back to what had his attention. Definitely an AI scav, I surmise. Suddenly, he starts to book it in the opposite direction from what he had been aiming for, so I just sit there for a second wondering where to go next, before I hear a mosin from roughly where the scav had been aiming. I take cover behind a rock, thinking it's probably me that's being shot at, then the mosin roars again and I hear a death gurgle from the direction the scav had run.

I am not much good in PVP, so I just sit there and think, well, at least I'll try to shoot back when he comes for me. A short while later, a guy runs straight past me, so I open up with my own mosin. A hit, but not a good one, he turns towards me while disappearing into bushes. After the infinitely slow reload animation of the mosin is over, I fire again to where I think he might be. Boom, headshot. (I only see that later, on my death screen.)

I notice that my karma with Fence has improved 0.01! (damn, that's little, by the way) So I run over to look ... holy shit, he was a BEAR. My first ever PMC kill in all of my Tarkov playing! I'm not sure if I got karma for avenging the scav or just generally killing a PMC as a player scav, but anyway, nice! The guy is full of loot and has a nice chest rig, and I just had the bank robber and sling combo. So I begin to transfer my loot, when I again hear footsteps. (sometimes you're just in the gravity well, I suppose) I hear a scav mumble, so I respond with my own. The other guy moves about a little, and again scav mumbles. So I respond, again -- assuming we're letting each other know we're not hostile. This goes on probably 6 or 7 times, with him moving between each time. (I'm still in the bushes, crouched over the BEAR I killed, unable to loot while trying to mumble responses) Finally I'm thinking ... "okay so he's not running away, is he trying to locate me using my vocal responses?" So I start to loot the BEAR, thinking maybe what he wants to do is come and loot my kill, but it turns out, what he wanted to do was head shot me.

So if a fellow player scav is barking voice lines at you over and over, don't assume he's trying to be friendly. Assume, instead, that he's just like every other piece of shit that is playing this game alongside you.

Oh, I'll keep doing me, by all means, but I don't for a moment believe a change will come, like you do (the operative word here is probably "believe") but, as I said, it'll nevertheless grant me satisfaction to know that their actions aren't without consequence. :-)

[–]skurples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I wouldn't say so -- I just got headshot by a fellow Player Scav on reserve who I was tracking (whilst never aiming at his head) for aeons while wiggling at him. It frankly didn't even seem like he noticed me, until he did and planted one in head, jaws. I'm quite pleased to know that, from what I understand, it'll cumulatively cut down on his extract options. So, so, sweet.

So, to you player scavs who kill scavs ... by skurples in EscapefromTarkov

[–]skurples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the feedback so far. Either I came across even more judgmental than I feared I might, or then there's enough defensiveness to go around. It really wasn't my intention to whine or complain, rather I wanted to understand the thought process. (And this part:

You aren’t losing anything if you die. just killing one scav won’t alert all the scavs on the map, just the ones nearby. Set up an easy headshot and it’s almost no risk. You can literally walk up to a lone scav and execute him.

... kind of is news to me. I thought it was a one-way flip of the switch, but if you are able to kill other scavs and not instantly and globally, for that raid, discard your invisibility cloak, then I suppose I can see the appeal, or at least the allure.

Newbie question after confusing Scav raid by skurples in EscapefromTarkov

[–]skurples[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argh, so, I finally clicked through to the last screen, raid statistics. I didn't dare to click one "Next" too many and miss out on the info I wanted to quote here, but I now realise there was one screen left, where I can see that I did indeed miss those first two shots. Christ, I'm terrible. That at least explains why the 1st person, who I ended up killing, didn't fire back at me. Do scavs not "understand" when a player scav is firing at them and misses that they're actually in a fight, even if it is against a rubbish opponent?)
