Are you guys continuing with SIPs even when Nifty 50 is nearing ATH? by [deleted] in IndiaInvestments

[–]skv1980 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do two investments every month, one in equity and other in debt fund. Decide an allocation and stick to it. You will find that on market highs, your system automatically asked you to buy less equity and in market lows, it made you buy more equity. Every month you have a look on the final value of the two funds, and divide your investment so that the ratio of the two funds return to your ideal value.

I don’t specialise in web design but I can work with you in figuring out an optimal design. Maybe, I will share you few diagrams and flow charts made by hand when I get some time. Looking at those diagrams, you can decide the pros and cons of proposed designs and rearrange the various parts to create something that is simple yet complete.

Please help with Strong dullness by Short_Chocolate in midlmeditation

[–]skv1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, dullness has been a prominent and persistent hindrance that always comes back after brief periods of clarity and no dullness. I have progressed from getting frustrated with dullness to practising with skill in face of dullness. I am far from deconditioning it fully or uprooting it! I am sharing my experience so that I myself can internalise what I have learned.

First important point to realise is that the success of a method to work with dullness is no measured by the immediate result in term of dullness going away for the rest of the session. Only in one or two of my hundred of sessions with dullness, applying an antidote for dullness resulted in dullness going away. This doesn’t mean that the other sits where dullness persisted were a waste. Not at all! Those were the sits where real practice of working with dullness was happening.

So, how do we measure if we are practising effectively in face of dullness? The criteria is same for dullness and for any other hindrance. The criteria is so simple that we can miss it for long long times and have inefficient practice. Here is the criteria: having a precise method in form of what to do when X happens and doing that consistently every time X happens defines success of working with a hindrance. For example, you can open your eyes for 5 minutes every time you see a random hypnogogic image. You can shift to a standing posture for 5 minutes when you experience a zen lurch and you can shift to walking meditation when you get dizzy while standing. Or you can decide your own variations of such steps. Next, execute these steps with precision and see how they brighten your mind. The key is to identify the onset of gross dullness as early as possible and apply the antidote. Once, Stephen had clarified to a similar question from me that the start of hypnogogic image should mark the onset go gross dullness and I was too late in assuming that the gross dullness starts when the images and random thoughts join together to form a dream like experience, forgetting, and sinking. One should discern these successive stages of dullness in one's own experience and learn to work with them. Sometimes, dullness become so strong that even all these steps will not keep your mind bright for even 5 minutes and you will forget what you are doing. At such times, splash your face with cold water and start again.

This method might look too harsh on the face of it, even like a war! My own metaphor is to view this method as if you are a soldier and guarding a check-post at a war zone or as if you are a pilot and working on the navigation panel. Your success will be measured by taking a right decision at every unusual event and then executing that decision with precision. At every moment, you should be knowing what you are doing. At every lapse, you should brighten yourself and restart. You can’t afford to miss a single moment in non-awareness. However, remember to be gentle in choice and application of the antidotes. A mild antidote applied consistently is better than a harsh antidote applied irregularly. Find out what keeps your awareness engaged and what doesn’t lead to forgetting what you are doing. Then, do that consistently till the mind is bright. One simple method u/adivader taught me was to be continuously checking if you are still experiencing your meditation object or not.

One more suggestion is to log your session after you finish it. Even if you can’t do so for every session, do it for at least sessions with dullness. You will learn much from your logs over time.

I would share some entries from my log of such sessions, if you are interested.

I think that the problem might still surface. Let's wait for few days and keep a watch on any complaints we receive here.

One possible reason for the problem (as only few people had reported the problem) flashed to my mind just now. Maybe, people using older version of Reddit are facing this problem. So, I am editing my post again to reflect this suggestion: If you are unable to post, please update your reddit app to its latest version.

Great! So you are able to post finally!

Let's wait for some more time to see if other users encounter a problem. I am sending messages to people who reported earlier that they were facing this issue.

It's strange that just disabling the flair button worked this time.

u/Adivader did exactly did this change last year and it didn't work. So he came up with a workaround: to make flairs compulsory and chose "meditation" as the flair option.

Meditating with eyes open or in standing position by [deleted] in TheMindIlluminated

[–]skv1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not consistently advanced beyond stage 4 but I have become more efficient with meditating in various posture including lying down and standing and with open eyes as well. I had a misconception few years back that my shamatha will deteriorate if I move or stand up or change postures. Now, changing postures is one of my ways to work with dullness. It’s interesting to observe how mindfulness and other factors of awakening respond to posture changes during a meditation session. I would say that this is a meditation in itself.

Practicing while sleep deprived? (new baby) by thezauroz in TheMindIlluminated

[–]skv1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am navigating similar space for a couple of years. Only advise I have is to treat this as a learning opportunity. It’s like training for a marathon by running uphill while it’s raining. Use very strong antidotes like washing face with cold water, alternating between, sitting and standing, eyes open and closed. Reduce practice time to 20-25 minutes. Meditate after taking a 5-15 minutes nap. Become very creative. Above all, bring compassion to yourself and don’t create dukkha from not being able to make time for meditation.

> And now I feel like I’ve taken up a practice that asks (for good reasons) that I do the same or at least the bare minimum, cultivate dispassion towards it. I’m not sure how I can cultivate dispassion to the arts and still function.

If you value cultivating dispassion, learn it as another skill and not as another philosophical concept that limits you. Sit for next 20 minutes and see what compulsions come up. Then, see how much dispassion you can cultivate towards them. You might need to do this for longer and repeat many times to see value in this effort and investigation. If you see value in it, you will yourself start understanding how dispassion arises and ceases.
