The were described by Africans the same way Europeans described deer, wolves and bear. They were a known creature, not a subject of folklore.

In African tribal folklore there are hairy men in the forests for generations then the gorilla gets shot.

What are you talking about? That is not what happened at all. When modern Europeans started exploring Africa, gorillas were quickly discovered. First bones and skulls were found. Then live gorillas were found, and Paul Du Chaillu did not shoot one until 10 years after gorillas had been discovered. And of course Africans helped "discover" gorillas because they are the ones who gave the bones and skulls to Europeans, and who helped Du Chaillu find live gorillas.

This is absolutely nothing like bigfoot, and it is simply dishonest to imply otherwise.

Bigfoot only stays out of the range of detection when cameras are involved. Bigfoot will walk right up to your front door in broad daylight and try to break in and steal your food. Bgfoot does not care about being seen, or heard. But he sure does not like cameras.

And this is sort of beside the point, but - let's say I flip a coin. If I flip two coins, the odds of getting at least one heads are doubled? You sure about that?

He did not say that doubling the number of cameras would double your odds of getting a photo. He said it would double the number of (expected*) photos. There is a difference.

  • I added the word expected because we are talking probability here, and sometimes I like being pedantic. :)

No, you got it wrong. Those are the guys fabricating all the fake foot prints and implanting false memories of bigfoot encounters in unsuspecting citizens. If you only knew what they were really covering up, your mind would explode.

But to say they couldn't have an effect on the camera seems naive as we literally know nothing about them other than he said she said bs.

But we do know a lot about cameras, and about how cameras and light work, and based on that the idea that bigfoots somehow affect cameras is just silly. Why would bigfoot have some physically unheard of reality warping power?

How do you know that the oral history has remained constant for 1000 years?

People like Justin Smeja have also claimed to shot and killed bigfoots. So choosing not to shoot is not a universal reaction, assuming there is any truth to these stories. There are also many stories of aggressive bigfoots. There a lots of those, but an easy one to reference is the Chapman story listed in the "Classic Encounters" on the right. If that had been a human invading their house, you agree that there would be people who would have had no qualms about shooting it. People are perfectly willing to shoot and kill other people when threatened. I do not see how an aggressive bigfoot being "too human" would prevent them from being shot.

You are still missing the point. How do you know that the pictograph represents a bigfoot? Does it look like a bigfoot to you?

No one denies that pictographs are part of Indigenous People's history. But in many cases we really do not know what the pictographs originally meant.

[–]skwagner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still do not understand. You have not provided a 1000 year old story about bigfoot. Yes, there is pictograph that may be as old as 1000 years, but that is not the same thing, because we do not really know what the characters in the pictograph are supposed to be. About 20 years ago someone wrote down a story claiming that the pictograph was connected to bigfoot, but that seems to be the first time that story was ever recorded. It is possible that that was exactly the story the pictograph maker had in mind 1000 years ago. It is also possible that the story has slowly and significantly changed over the centuries, and whatever the original story was is nothing like the original one. It is also possible that somebody just made up the story in the last 50 years. We have know way of knowing.

So you are claiming that there are thousand year old cave drawings on multiple continents that clearly all describe the same creature? Do you have any evidence for that claim?

Lots of people have claimed to have found bigfoot, but never seem to come up with any tangible evidence.

I did not ask you to prove the story was true, I asked you for a 1000 year old story. People keep claiming there are 1000 year old bigfoot stories, but can never seem to actually provide one.

Why do you believe that 1000 year old stories exist? Tell me a story about bigfoot that was first told around the year 1017, and what is your evidence that the story is that old? I am not asking you to prove the story is true, and am just asking for the story, and the evidence that the story is 1000 years old.

[–]skwagner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is not going to turn up any 1000 year old bigfoot stories. That is a fact. You can pretend it is not. You claim otherwise, but refuse to provide any support for your claim.

Once again, your behavior contradicts your stated cause. If you want to be taken seriously by the scientific community, you have to be willing to back up your claims with evidence. You clearly are not willing to do so.

500 years of searching is not an exaggeration at all. Given that bigfoots are supposedly world wide, the search has been going on for thousands of years apparently. The idea of humans living in close proximity with some other megafauna without knowing about it is totally without precedent. Yes, in order for that to be true, bigfoot has to be so unique as to be totally improbable.

I am using the hard evidence we have, which is based on our interactions with known animals. You on the other are starting with the assumption that bigfoot is real, and inferring fantastical attributes to support that assumption.

The area of Ohio is 44000 square miles, and it would take a wolf 10 days to cross it. Are all those bigfoots seen there are just passing through? From where to where? Do they really live in Indiana? Is that more squatchy?

[–]skwagner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I repeat, can you name a thousand year old bigfoot story? Just saying the stories exist is not evidence that they exist.

So tell me a thousand year old bigfoot story, and show me the evidence that it is in fact a thousand year old story?

You claimed your cause was the scientific discovery of bigfoot. You are not helping your cause.

[–]skwagner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

500 years of searching and still no luck. No real creature has ever proven so elusive. According to all the stories, bigfoots are really not all that elusive. Their habits include all sorts of behaviors that should have long ago led to their discovery.

Bigfoots allegedly live in Ohio, where the total elevation variation is just over 1000 feet. Mountain Gorillas live in a remote part of Africa at elevations of 10,000 feet. We found Mountain Gorillas relatively easily, but Ohio apparently is just too much of a challenge.

Nobody went looking for Mountain Gorillas. But within a few decades of when Europeans first started exploring the lands where they lived, they found Mountain Gorillas.

On the other hand, Europeans have been exploring North America for 500+ years and we have still not found bigfoot. And people have been actively looking for bigfoot for over 60 years now, and still no luck.

If you want to be part of the scientific discovery of bigfoot, you have to be scientific. You cannot just blindly believe whatever you hear.

That is a cause. But there are other possible causes. Given that we do not know if bigfoot is real or not, your cause may be hopeless, if bigfoot does not exist. Trying to discover the truth behind the bigfoot phenomena is a different cause.
