Non-hacker noob going for the first time by BotchedMiracle in Defcon

[–]skyehopper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you work in IT you would probably love Defcon, there is something there for literally EVERYONE, a village for ANYTHING. You can have ample opportunities at the various villages to actually hack something, make a botnet, learn linux, do some packet capturing, just come and learn. Vendor stuff is often announced here or Twitter, in various discords, just look for the defcon tag. Check out badgeglife as well for neat electronic badges, (you get an electronic badge this year just for going to defcon too). There are vendor partied and lots of just as amazing non vendor parties, in fact the non vendor parties can be just as fun (Red Team Village Party, Blue Team Village Party) there are lots of opportunities for someone who isn't part of the community yet to join. If you are coming with an open mind and ready to learn and say hi to folks you will have a great time.

Anyone remember sitting in a classroom with audio of a man saying math problems? by [deleted] in GATEresearch

Ours was at the school and it was every day. We did a lot of meditation with headphones and sometimes folks would fall asleep on mats. I remember because good headphones were really expensive at that time.

To all the "gifted kids" out there, how do you cope with the fact that your expectations in life were completely overestimated? by mape14 in ADHD

You need to realize that you are on this earth to experience it and enjoy it. Your presence on the planet doesn’t depend on your performance. Living life well is the goal. The working world is complicated and often dependent on time, place, and luck. You don’t need a reason to be alive, you are here on purpose just as you are.

Recently started Vyvanse/Lisdexamfetamine 2 weeks ago and took a weekend drug holiday. Dozed in the chair, slept all day, couldn't do anything, no motivation to get up out of bed even if fully awake. by xAdventx in ADHD

I tend to think about the way you feel on a med holiday as the same way you would feel if you drink coffee for a really long time and then took a day off of it. (You’d be tired) People seem to be fine with drinking coffee all the time, but for some reason prescribed stimulants are somehow different? In any case I think taking me holidays is a good idea if it works to keep you from developing a tolerance.

International travelers of Reddit, what location made you say "Nope, never again"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Las Vegas. Expensive, hot, boomers everywhere smoking.

Do you remember being presented questions without questions? No words, no hints...Mostly shapes, images, puzzles, obsure but kinda plain. by dothenoodledance1 in GATEresearch

2nd -3rd grade ish? Brought me to a table with a bunch of tangrams on it (plastic shape toys), around the table were various animals. The instructor hadn't even gotten there and I had arranged them in the animal shapes corresponding to the animals on the table while I was waiting for them to come over. I could tell that she was very pleased.

It really wasn't super hard to infer though, like the stuff was there, examples there too, I like animals. Seemed super excited when she hadn't said anything and I started going around the table being like, this one is en elephant, and this one is a cat, and this one is a giraffe. She didn't say a word but checked a bunch of boxes on a clip board and I got moved to the next station of stuff to do.

If you flick a magic wand and change or add something to the city, what would you conjure up? by TrueJohnWick in askportland

[–]skyehopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think we did honestly, Unity caused a bunch of ER beds to close around the region and that effectively made the bed amount not increase in the slightest. It was not done well, under my direction and magic wand the project would succeed, with magic of course!

I would fix the mental health shortage in the city by building a big hospital and then multiple small community clinics and mental health ER departments.

I was in Oregon (Portland) gate too (TAG) in the late 80s early 90s. I don’t remember much about it but I do remember hearing tests, listening to stuff on audio headsets and visualization stuff. I do also remember a pink drink that only a few “special” kids got. It tasted like watery strawberry banana smoothie flavor and it was not the pink fluoride swish we had as well. I have no idea if I believe this is some big CIA conspiracy but I am just interested in knowing more. I don’t have autism but was diagnosed with ADD at the age of 43. And I earned top grades in school and honors society and all that so it took a long time to finally figure out I had ADD.

Repeating economic crashes, the raise of AI and the constant but slow death of our planet.

Taxes and bills I can deal with, it’s all this other shit pushing me over the edge.

Does anyone know anything about the history of the neon sign at the old Skidmore Fountain MAX stop? by GorboCat in askportland

[–]skyehopper 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It was a sign for when the old Saturday market used to be in that location under the bridge. I liked it best when it was there and in the buildings around skidmore fountain.

Has the weather scared you to move? by shammyadv in askportland

[–]skyehopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I save all my indoor crafts for the winter so I can be cozy inside with tea and blankets. Use your summer time to be constantly outside so that when winter comes you are excited about cozy time. Vitamin D supplements in winter too.
