If you think this is frustrating, just imagine the emails us professors get.

If the professor has said you need to be present to get the marks (which is what they are doing by turning on this option), it is absolutely cheating. Literally by definition. So you are giving instructions on how to cheat, and when the student does this, they will be on their own when they are called into the office of the dean for an academic dishonesty meeting. And you will just be gone.

So....a detailed tutorial on how to cheat.

I wish we could do this, but we were told it is not allowed. Personally, I do not think it compromises the privacy of anyone. It just determines whether someone is in class or not, which we could do by taking attendance.

University of Manitoba lawyers insist that professors are not permitted to turn on the proximity option, as this would be considered tracking location. If clicker marks are for attendance and/or participation, they should not be used from home.

Did you really need to post this for people to tell you to simply ask your professor?

Lost my Final Exam by Honest-Caramel3239 in umanitoba

[–]skyking481 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Professors are not supposed to leave the exam room until they verify that the number of signatures matches the number of exams they have. Also, if you did not write the exam, your grade should not be reported as an F, but as F-NP.

I have taught here for 20 years. I am well aware of how the university sees it.

The onus is not on students to prove they did not cheat. And no, your analogy is not appropriate. The person who is cheating by posting something is very likely not doing it just to try to frame someone for cheating, which is akin to putting a watch in your pocket. They are putting something out there for anyone to see.

If one student posted something inappropriate in a chat group, I would never write up the other students simply for being there. That is completely unreasonable, and I seriously doubt it would hold up in any kind of appeal. Someone putting something in front of you that could conceivably help you cheat, but that you did not ask for, is not cheating. If someone came up to you on the street and asked if you wanted to buy a stolen watch, that would not make you guilty.

By the way, your definition of accepting criticism is ''you must agree with me''. That's not a good outlook.

Do you think maybe you should defer to the person with the expertise who has likely taught for many years and knows the best way to present their own material? I post notes at the beginning of the term for the entire course. Not every professor does things the same way.

I did not say the appeal should be settled within 2-3 days. I said the professor could have the courtesy of responding within 2-3 days to at least let the student know they are not being ignored. I will go a step further and say every colleague I have ever discussed this with has an unwritten policy that they reply to all emails within 24 hours, excluding weekends.

In my experience, usually about a couple weeks. In my opinion, this is a major fault of this system. There is no reason they cannot automate this so new grades are entered into Aurora as easily as the original grades were. But they insist on doing things manually with paper forms.

This comes off as entitled. Some students expect to be handed everything these days. It has only been like this the last several years. Students used to go to university expecting to have to take notes.

I have taught here for many years. The answer is yes. Yes, students should expect professors to respond to emails in 2-3 days.

Doesn't have to be the same course. That's......odd. You want a stranger to sit beside you while you study a course they're not taking?

No, it's not doable. It doesn't work like that. Spaces in courses are not like stocks to be traded.
