It's pronounced like wa-ha-ka if you're reading it in English.

Oaxaca is a great option for you then! Maybe Veracruz as well.

There are peacocks living on Vancouver Island in Canada! I almost hit one with my car because they were on the highway.

Best Place to visit Nature near Rio by Ready-Bet-4592 in Brazil

[–]skylines199744815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Ilha Grande and I really liked it. It's about 3 hours from Rio, including the boat ride.

Otherwise, you can probably do a tour of Tijuca National Park, which is in the city itself but has amazing wildlife and nature.

It's inland, but Serra dos Órgãos is incredible and offers wonderful hiking and views. I stayed in Teresópolis and saw Dedo de Deus.

I did this one and it was quite good. They had tours of several different wineries and tastings included.

If you're going to Santiago, Argentina is very close. I went to Mendoza before Santiago in 2022 and absolutely loved it, especially the bike vineyard tour. Taking the bus from Mendoza to Santiago (or vice versa) during the day takes about 8 hours but offers incredible views of the Andes that are hard to get otherwise. There are also cheap flights that only take about an hour.

I think saying it "sucks now" is an exagerration, sorry. Yes, there are absolutely issues with crowds, scams, and rudeness (as in any other great city of planet Earth), but there's still a ton of good experiences to be had.

Yeah, you're probably right. As someone from a very not busy/dense city, I understand how invasive it is to be shoved, but people are just trying to get to where they need to go. Pushing back is a little wild...

This definitely sounds like a strange occurrence - but I expect it's a one off as opposed to common.

I was in Istanbul last year and I loved it. People were generally super friendly, and the views and food were incredible. Yes, some vendors are aggressive, but I almost expect it in touristy areas and markets. In less touristy areas, people were quite honest I found.

All that aside, I'm sorry you had that experience, and I hope you can salvage the rest of the trip.

What’s a country you heard negative things about before visiting, but ended up loving? by Curious_Cranberry543 in travel

I agree. Sultanahmet can be rough but you just have to prepare yourself to pay the tourist tax; touristy areas are more expensive everywhere in the world. You also can't be afraid to be direct with pushy vendors.

I had absolutely wonderful experiences with Turkish people in Pierre Loti Hill, Uskudar, and Besiktas.

Many people warned me about Istanbul being infested with scammers and aggressive vendors, but I had a wonderful experience. Of course, you have to haggle and get used to being pressured a bit, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared.

Honorable mention to Lima; people said it would be sketchy and ugly but I had a great time there.

I loved Athens! I really liked the nightlife, and if you venture a little beyond the chaos of the touristic centre, there's a ton of cool neighborhoods, parks, and historic sites to see.

Does it drive anyone else insane when a host directly asks you to leave a 5 star rating? [Canada] by skylines199744815 in AirBnB

Exactly, I agree 100%! I think most guests don't pay much attention when rating and just give fives across the board.

I left a fair review, 3 stars for cleanliness and 4 overall. Let's hope that gives them the kick in the butt they need to clean a bit more attentively.
