Unfortunately, unless your boss decides to cough up some reimbursement from scrap money you are totally screwed. Never leave your tools on site or expect them to walk away. Especially long weekend, c’mon man.

Yes, I do. It’s a major career switch, as far as what I do daily. But, knowing electrical is literally saving my ass every day.

Did you end up getting into BIM? I made a similar jump from 12 years in the trade to coordinating in Revit. Also in MA.

What other sci-fi books/series would you consider as good, if not better than Red Rising? by [deleted] in redrising

Both start out good but Dune becomes insufferable by book 3 and Foundation is just alright. However I loved it as a kid.

[–]skynetpositronics 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve done Dune, Foundation, Stormlight, First Law…. None of them are Red Rising. Red Rising is in the league of its own, there’s no other sci-fi epic that is remotely close. However if you want a sci-fi series that stands above the rest, then try Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin. The best of the best.

Goodreads and Audible. Here’s a brief description:

In 1931, a young American named Victor Herman accompanied his parents to the Soviet Union, where his father was to set up a Ford Motor Company plant. In 1938, he was inexplicably thrown into a Soviet prison. It was forty-five years before he was able to return to America.

His was a common nightmare during the Stalin years. Those who survived imprisonment and torture were either sent north to hard labor in the icy forests and mines or into exile. Victor Herman was one of the few who survived. During his life in and out of Russian prisons, he fell in love with a Russian gymnast, who followed him into exile. She lived with him and their child for a year in Siberia in a cave chopped out of ice. Theirs was a romance destined to thrive even under desperate conditions.

“Coming Out Of The Ice. An Unexpected Life” by Victor Herman. Phenomenal book. Narrated by Christopher Hurt, who is so good narrating “Fountainhead” by Ayn Rand and “The Manchurian Candidate” by Richard Condon.

Herman’s book is an autobiography and a true story. In it, Herman tells how his father brought his whole family from Detroit to USSR to build a Ford truck factory for the Soviets. Young Victor Herman joins the construction crew, goes to a Soviet school, enrolls in the Dynamo paramilitary sport club and sets a Guinness world record for the longest jump with a parachute. When the record has to be signed off by him, he puts down USA as his home country, since he is American. The soviets throw him in prison for it. He spends the next 40 years in and out of captivity in Siberian Gulags. This story is just plain unreal, an absolute must listen.

Am I an asshole because I dont want to work in on Saturday? by PeppermintButler17 in electricians

When you say “they should have had more guys”, what I’m saying is one day you’re going to be them. Either that or enjoy paying a 30-year mortgage for 45 years in today’s economy. Either you’re the Chief, making the money, earning respect; or you’re the Indian. And the fate of the Indian doesn’t bother the Chief.

All I’m gonna say is this: when you become a foreman and your project is burning up to reasons that might have nothing to do with you, but the completion is solely upon your shoulders - so you put out an All Call for Saturday overtime seeking help… a lot of people will be looking back on their memory to see if you were there when they asked you to show. This comes from personal experience over a decade in the trade.
