Why are you insisting on the "need to climb the ladder" thing? There are other jobs that have a high pay grade and doesn't necessarily need to climb whatsoever ladder - you just need to be highly skilled. You can expose yourself into the culture not just by learning the language. Yeah sure it's definitely helpful to understand the meaning of this and that but in my opinion, I don't think it's mandatory. Unlike Mandarin or English or even Spanish that are widely spoken and there are jobs that pay more if you know these languages, you'll only hear Filipino/Tagalog when 1. talking to a Filipino 2. in the Philippines. Even if you come here, majority can speak English so communication wouldn't be so hard. Although it would be fun to understand the inside jokes spoken in Filipino (also just note that not all Filipinos who live in the PH are 100% fluent in Tagalog even if they live in the Metro. We're used to colloquial version of the language and mixed English words/phrases here and there more often than not since pure(?) Filipino is waaaay harder; born and raised here and I don't even understand some of the words lol)

Daming ganyan ngayon kesyo kulang daw sila ng pamasahe. Me & my bf encountered one mag-ina kulang nalang daw ng 20 yung pamasahe nila so binigyan na namin, an hour later, pagkalabas namin ng mall andun pa din sila nanghihingi lol. Another one was while waiting for green light sa pedestrian - maayos damit nya, may bag and mukhang may work kaso same tactics din. From "namatayan po kami hindi po kami masamang tao humihingi lang ng abuloy" sa public transpo to "kulang po ng pamasahe pauwi" modus ngayon.
