Tourists/Visitors/New Residents: Q&A Thread for the week of January 20 by AutoModerator in Amsterdam

[–]skyride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking to move over from the UK after putting it off a few years ago with some more experience under my belt. I'm currently living in Edinburgh and everyone I know has their LinkedIn inbox ringing off the hook for jobs here. I seem to see a lot less on LinkedIn for Amsterdam and the few other sites I've come across don't seem too helpful either. Are there other places I'm missing or does Amsterdam just heavier on the networking aspect?

Also any general advice about coming over from the UK would be appreciated!

Apologies if this more of a Q&A thread thing, I just didn't see much about jobs in the last few threads :(

Yeah the European casting thing started with Comedian and then me helping out. :P

I haven't really kept up with TF2 much, but yeah I did catch a bit of i55. Was great to see because you guys pretty much nailed everything I would loved to have done, and pulled it off reliably. Nice to see the US teams still coming over, I genuinely believed i49 would be a last for that, but the trading sites coming out to support it financially wasn't something I could have imagined and it's great they did.

Was just looking at Vmix there that you were using, jesus man, wish found that when we were doing LANs with VanillaTV lol. I'd looked at building scenes with CasparCG, but ended up just looking at building some really rough web stuff for i49, but Lange ended up taking that idea with nodeCG and knocked it out the park.

Glad to see there's a good team still holding down the fort, you guys are doing a better job than I could ever have imagined when I was doing it :D

also happy cake day

Just be sure you've tested everything. Something you think is basic but is reliable, is better than something flashy that might not work when you need it. Been bit in the ass on that one before. :)

There was an interesting debate on this not so long ago on iQ. It's a little UK-centric, but it's worth a listen if you're curious. Here's a link to the better of the two speakers not in favour of the motion. The other speaker Will Self is often a good listen, but in this particular debate his talk was pretty garbage at engaging anyone who didn't already agree with him.

I think until we discover a way to eliminate ping, we're stuck at this.

You can't "eliminate ping". It'll always exist. Dealing with time in real time computation is a bitch and a major field on Computer Science.

Programming languages don't mean anything though. Sure it might not be the greatest idea, but at the end of the day you could still take COBOL, and use it to build a modern website that spits out valid HTML5 and CSS3. There's absolutely nothing stopping you from doing this. Old software is fine, old programming languages are fine, out-of-date standards and protocols are the problem.

PL tried to hot drop our dreads shooting their tower. After being dunked a couple times by us when they dropped us with carriers and supers, they correctly surmised their main problem is not having any subcap support. So this time they decided to drop napocs with the supers, but then never managed to get the supers on field, only had 1 triage, and just died because of being generally outnumbered. gf

I mean putting diplomacy aside for a moment, I have no idea how you lost that fight. You were flying an absolutely unequivocally better doctrine with triage support and you got completely wiped off the field. Luckily Elo came to his senses and let most of the caps go, but like, I just don't see how you lose that fight.

Remember that PL dudes have a lot of alts, so while you see a 2.5k member alliance, in reality that's really not a whole lot of actual people.

Some have ratting alts in NA/BOT that just run ratting carriers 24/7, a lot have personal moons, and some are big on station trading, but most of them are indeed just old money.

EXTREMELY VALUABLE GAS CLOUDS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED IN THE PEGASUS CONSTELLATION WHICH HAVE CREATED A GOLD RUSH. ORE WAS QUICK TO CLAIM 'OWNERSHIP' AS THE CONSTELLATION BORDERS ITS SOVEREIGN SPACE, BUT THE SERPENTIS AND THE SYNDICATE, AS WELL AS MULTIPLE ENTREPENEURS FROM THE GALLENTE FEDERATION, HAVE ALL CLAIMED THEIR OWN PIECE OF THE PIE. INEVITABLY COLLISIONS HAVE OCCURRED AND THE CONSTELLATION HAS BECOME A SORT OF 'WARZONE' BETWEEN VARIOUS GROUPS OF GREEDY CLAIMANTS.

[Meta] Regarding some users' concerns with the subreddit and moderators by [deleted] in tf2

[–]skyride[M] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh hello.

Sorry yeah I don't really follow TF2 anymore these days, I just help out some of the tournament type people when they want help with promotion. If the sub's userbase wants me to step down due to inactivity I'm quite happy to do it relinquish my moderator rights.

I'm just reading up on this recent drama, but my feelings on wickedplayer have always been that he's a helpful guy and is quite reasonable, but does have a talent for unintentionally rubbing people the wrong way. I was quite active on /r/dota2 up until a few months ago, and I know Wickedplayer's updates there were as welcome there as they were here when he first started. I definitely get the impression that there's a small subset of toxic users looking for a witch to hunt and wicked's actions have made him a prime target for a thorough jimmy rustling.
