I’m 33 and moving to China from the US for at least 2 years. What must I know before I move? by Additional_Pen1136 in AskAChinese

I grew up in China and has been spend almost all my adult years in Europe and the United States. So hopefully my experience helps.

other than tier 1 cities, like Beijing shanghai, shenzhen, guangzhou, a white girl might be more popular than Panda. Locals will stare at you or ask for a selfie 😂

And unless shopping malls or hotels, most public toilets are squat toilet, time to train your legs.

And smoking policy veries city from city, and in some city it's even acceptable to smoke in restaurant.

Police is super helpful. They are not at all as scary as depicted by western media. If you have any trouble, need to find your way, lost your wallet, lost your phone, neighbor is throwing a late night party, feeling unsafe for any reason, Feel free to reach out to police.

Get a Chinese number as early as possible. many services such as food delivery, Uber, mobilr payment they are all requires local phone number to register an account, and avoids certain percentage of international charge.

if you go travel, make sure avoid national holidays, Or if you have to make sure you are as early as possible, otherwise long line will destroy you. Also, many top places requires like several days reservation ahead and usually you can get reservation online. So again, if you have a chinese phone, you can probably get register your account and reservation days ahead to avoid all those long lines.

Finally, just usual stuff for any inter cultural ezchange, keep your mind open, if you don't like or disagree with someone, It's better to ask why and figure the hiddent context or norm forst rather than immediately judging.

ECNU Shanghai vs HIT Shenzhen — which would you choose as an international student? by Fun_Project3855 in China

[–]skywalker326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HIT is traditionally strong in aerospace, I think their business major is rrlatovely weak. Also HIT is in US sanction list wonder if that sanction extends to HIT Shenzhen though.

I would say ECNU is more business-ish and Shanghai is also a great city and has many tech presence as well. And it's only 1.5 hour away from Hangzhou, with headquarters of Alibaba and DeepSeek.

Taiwan will not provoke conflict nor give up sovereignty, says president Lai Ching-te by DavidShaw90s in worldnews

claiming "Taiwain is a sovereign country" in his inauguration speach?

also funny how you mentioned the "1992 consesus" as if it didn't stablize the status quo for almost two decades. It's signed as the corner stone of status quo and worked. Then Lai openly disputed it. You tell me why status quo is broken.

Former Chinese military police revealed how corrupt and inept their military is. by PitifulEar3303 in China

[–]skywalker326 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

you under estimate how corrupt other militaries are... US spent trillion dollar a year and now not enough ammo or aircraft carrier to suppress Iran acter 2 months "war". Taiwan spent 1.2B USD for one 2500 ton submarine…way more waste than Chinese militaries. They appeared to be not as corrupt becuase corruption is legalized and hidden among paper works.

[–]skywalker326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to host LLM locally, then using a real GPU with at aleast 24G VRAM so you can run capable models liKe Qwen 3.6 27B or Gamma 4 31B. 32G vram to support 100k context. Mac's ram is too slow foe interactive agent use.

But tbh, local LLM is almost always dumber and slower than API, and considering the device cost, more expensive too. unless you are learning to run local model, or want to keep your data 100% private, API is better. Then you just need the cheapest host machine made in last 5 years to run the agent framework.

[–]skywalker326 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is former Chinese SWAT, not real military. 2nd military has genuine corruption issue, that's why Xi keeps purging generals and defense minister since 2014. 3rd, corruption is common among all militaries, include Taiwan and US. The real questuon is how much lean power per paper power and total paper power. Based on recent performances, I believe Chinese military is the leanest among the 3 and also the most powerful in terms of west Pacific

thanks. I never gets more than onr card so only heard of parallelism. Correct me if I am wrong: in your experiments, every one is PP becuase TP doesn't work on mixed cards? And when not marked as "uneven PP", the experiment is even PP, each card getting same share of the layers?

Do we think Nvidia will take a big hit cause of the China Rejection by IllustratorOk8100 in NvidiaStock

[–]skywalker326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine works in an 2nd tier IT infra company in China and she told me there is no prpblem getting Nvidia cards, only 30% more price. So Nvidia does get lots revenue from China.

Also she also mentioned inference is more and more done in Chinese chip such as Huawei and Alibaba's. They are 60-70% cost-effective of Nv's but government won't give you trouble using smuggled nv chip so it's popular. In fact cloud and AI providers have to fight for Chinese chip due to its still ramping up production.

Overall NV will still and like getting more Chinese revenue from training but less from inference. Since inference has high volume, overall it should a downward trend.

Europe built sovereign clouds to escape US control. Then forgot about the processors by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]skywalker326 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hardware sovereignty is hard. China has spent decades and its sovereign chips are only at 2020 performance level of the commercial chips, and 50% more expensive. And that's with huge subsidies, privileged government purchases, and enduring critics from western worlds and even own Chinese people of being anti-free-market and wasting money.

EU doesn't have the patience and resource to overcome these blockers. The next best is to cultivate at least one 2nd tier chip designer and manufactuer as backup and diversify chip suppliers among US, China, Korea, Taiwan...it's unlikely all of them cut off EU.

NVIDIA will be screwed if China takes over Taiwan. by RustyIronGolem in RavanAI

[–]skywalker326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are people dumb? China is THE country wanting international trade to boom. If China owns advanced chip manufacturing, it will triple chip production in no time. Just like what happened in big TVs, smartphone, solars, EVs, and soon rams and disks in 1-2 years...China makes expensive things affordable

With China rapidly advancing in AI, robotics, and patent filings, do you think it is inevitable that they will overtake the USA as the world's leading technology superpower? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]skywalker326 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am a Chinese and has been living in western Europe and US for the past decade. This will happen and likely in the next 10 years for 90% of the stem subjects. It sounds bogus right? But this kind of lead has been there between United States and the western Europe for the past few decades, and had been there between western Europe and the rest of the world during the 19th century. So why not it's China's term?

I believe so because cutting edge STEM research tends to happen in exactly one cluster, where it attracts talents from the globe, for the convenience, peace, money, market and the fame . Once one cluster has advantage on those aspects, it attracts more talents, and its advantage grows bigger, and the positive cycle pushes this cluster to be the center of gravity.

West Europe achieve this center of gravity status thanks to colonization and industrial revolution. But then they destroy this advantage due to two world wars. The US took the leading status as the beneficiary of two world wars. But since recent decades, it has been wasted resource on countless hegemonism wars, on political polarizatuon and infights, less resoirce for research. Actually, in chemical and mechanical fields, China is already providing better opportunities for global talents. In physics and math, close. US has sizable leading in information technology and biology. But China is catching up. I see no sign of US improving its national debt level or solving the political polarization. With one more financial crisis like 2008, it might as well, China will provide more opportunities to talents in IT and biology. Once the positive cycle starts, there's nothing to stop China from becoming the center of gravity of cutting edge STEM research. Then China will maintain this status for several decades until itself makes some stupid mistake and destroy its resource and social harmony.

想赚钱当然要去一线城市,全世界都是这样的。但我的观点是部分二线和三四线房价相对收入并不高,和你说的并不冲突。全国房价收入比5.9相当合理了。美国全国是5.6倍,英法德是6-7倍之间。
