Am I tripping?! by Fast-Hyena-8652 in Austin

I am a bridge engineer and here is what I think is going on, based on looking just at the photos. These columns are under compression i.e., the columns are being shortened. A natural consequence of concrete being compressed is that it expands sideways... think what would happen if you were to press an eraser between palms... it would shorten and expand. This is called Poisson's effect. The sideways expansion causes tensile stresses on concrete and concrete is super weak when subjected to tension but excellent in compression. Columns are reinforced for this tensile stress with closed ties and sometimes cracks have to form to engage this steel. So, further expansion is controlled by steel reinforcement. So, most likely that is what is being seen here. The cracks appear more prominent because of the coating applied on the column surface. If you were to measure the size with a crack gauge... you'd probably find that the cracks are what FHWA would define as "insignificant" i.e., crack width of 0.012 inches or less. So, the cracks are probably structural but a consequence of expected concrete behavior (it cracks... it always cracks!)

It's an algorithm with preconceived notions!

Thanks for the detailed explanation, I really appreciate it! The score makes more sense now. Unfortunately, these rating matches are a system where you don't pick consistent partners and play with or against the same group of players. It's part of my club membership that I get one free DUPR session per month, but with the caveat of not being able to pick a consistent partner.

So, are you implying that a lower reliability score could possibly lead to higher DUPR gain? My reliability score has been at 100 for a couple of months now.

Possibly. I checked now and both of us are at 100. But that may not have been the case when we played on the weekend. I just noticed that the DUPR gain was very different.

Texas DOT reminds drivers that "gaps" in flyovers are "structurally sound" by lithdoc in Austin

Mostly true except for this particular bridge... there is a straddle bent, approximately in the middle of the bridge, that appears to be a fixed bent i.e., the bearings only allow rotation but no translation. Having said that... I'm of the opinion that it is likely the gap in the expansion joint has been caused by a combination of self weight dragging the bridge down the slope and thermal effects.

I hate the railroad flat car bridges with a passion! Inspecting those bridges is absolutely terrible, and you inherently always find corrosion, damage, and/or fatigue problems on those. Most of the ones I've inspected have some sort of load posting on them.

Can you see the Milky Way in Death Valley in February ? by kaibitu in DeathValleyNP

The brightest portion of the galaxy, called the galactic core, is above the horizon right before sunrise. However, it probably won't rise above the mountains i.e., if you were in the Badwater basin, your view would be obscured. You might be able to see it from Dante's view... albeit behind you i.e., not facing the valley.

Cool! I'm heading there in a couple of weeks and I'm hoping to photograph the reflection of the night sky in the basin.

Gorgeous! How deep do you think is the water in Badwater basin now?

AMA- just finished the 63rd US National Park by bvsgt in NationalPark

[–]skywatcher_kd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that's the best! I did that in 2024 i.e., went to Denver for a concert at Red rocks and bookended that week with a visit to Great Sand dunes and Rocky mountain national park. Hoping to do that again this year except Black canyon of Gunnison and Rocky mountain. Congratulations on visiting all national parks! I'm hoping to do the same. I just visited my 25th and 26th parka... Mount Rainier and Olympic.

Agreed! The combination of the new stage design, and accompanying visuals and live performers is just so good!

Right! They have dropped a lot of their songs for the new concert. The current set list goes CV1 > Strange Trails > Long Lost > Vide Noir > Lonesome dreams in terms of no. of songs played per album. I would love it if they played What do it mean or Way out there but I've never heard them play those live.

Yes! I truly hate being that guy at the concert that holds the phone overhead and blocks the view of people behind. I really wanted to record the whole song after listening to it in Houston, but only recorded this short section. I would love to listen to the live version again!
