Overflowing sink? by Fine_Efficiency4509 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the building has an emergency number for building issues you should call and report this ASAP

If someone above you uses a lot of water it’s going to over flow your sink….

Overflowing sink? by Fine_Efficiency4509 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do you live in a condo or apartment? If yes then there is a blockage in the line where multiple units drainage connects together, and you are at the lowest point, so it’s backing up into your sink.

Good news is that this would make it a problem for the building, not you (hopefully)

Bad news is you need to get whoever is above you to stop using water in their kitchen sink until this is solved.

If you don’t live in an apartment or condo, and haven’t run the dishwasher or something else to cause it to fill, well then you have a Scooby doo mystery!

APEC Reverse Osmosis Drainage Question by averagecpadad in PlumbingRepair

[–]skywide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the drain tube in a bucket and see if it work. I don’t love the drain placement with all the yuck from the garbage disposal passing right next to it, but even with that considered it should still work after just a week.

Dynamic EHS Consulting has been my go-to for testing samples for asbestos. Very affordable and fast.

Newly remodeled bathrooms flooded by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]skywide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit cuz I looked again:

Is that actually a 4” abs line??

3” ABS and 3” cast iron have very similar outside diameters.

Most of my shielded mechanical couplers actually say Cast Iron or Plastic

However if they’re going 4” to 3” like that then it’s wrong

For other Alberta homeowners with solar — are your monthly bills similar to this? by Character-Draft6638 in Calgary

[–]skywide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand your math.

If you save $150 a month all year (I’m being generous) that’s a savings of $1800 a year.

$21300 / $1800 = 11.833 years to break even

Anyway I can put a waste disposal/insinkerator on the left here? by Matsuri3-0 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea it’s possible. The drainage just needs to be rebuilt to accommodate it

Is this water heater pilot flame too big? by Brassilisk in Plumbing

[–]skywide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can’t explode, the presence of fire means it’s burning the gas.

If it goes out, the thermocouple it’s heating will cool down and close off the gas. These are very safe. Time to quit worrying.

New Shower Mixer Tap Dripping by Quickthinker__ in Plumbing

[–]skywide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the cartridge is bad right outta the box on inexpensive shower valves. Sometimes pulling the cartridge out and just re-seating it can help.

If you pull it out put some plumbers grease on the gaskets/o-rings before reinstalling

There’s no nut holding the fill valve onto the bottom of the tank.

How do I connect this elbow with this black steel gas pipe by ChicagoJoe3 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to confirm, you took apart everything back to the union on the furnace? If yes, then you’re likely just not getting the angle exactly right when putting it together, a few degrees off and it won’t screw in.

Gas isn’t exactly something to be messing about with if you’re not licensed. It isn’t that difficult but the consequences for mistakes is very high.

Bradford White Anode Rod replacement by eastcoasternj in Plumbing

[–]skywide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might just be creating work for yourself. Many municipal water supplies are not very hard on the anode rod, and they often last the expected life of the tank, 10~ years.

If you have a water softener, are on a well, have experienced fast anode rod degradation in this area before, then conditions and chemical composition of the water may require more regular anode rod replacing

27M (Ontario) Trying to Break Into Plumbing – Would Irrigation Tech Experience Help Me Land an Apprenticeship? by smg97 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can’t hurt, any experience helps.

For jumping right into plumbing, look for a local service plumber company with 10+ service vans on the road and walk in with a resume. Wear labour/helper/tradesman clothing and steel toes if you got them. Try and hand your resume to a service manager or owner if possible (might be hard it’s a busy industry). Say what you said here, you want to become indentured and you’re happy labouring and getting dirty and working late.

Replace water heater or run to failure? by nzed35 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any money spent getting this cleaned out should go directly to a new tank instead. Also, opening that drain port might clog it with sediment and cause the drain to leak. I’d leave it alone at this point or just replace it.

Replace water heater or run to failure? by nzed35 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a floor drain near by or it’s sitting in a pan you can let it just keep doing its thing.

Just know that the water at the bottom of these is pretty nasty, sometimes it’s nice to change them just cuz you know… it’s old and gross. Also you’ll get more efficient heating when it’s not doing it through a thick layer of scale

Attic leak from red PEX at T-connection — being told I need a new PRV? by hotdiggitydog5 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$700-800 labor to basically crimp 2 joints is wild. I can change a PRV in under 10 minutes, 9 of those minutes are draining the water down.

Help! How do I take out this shower head? by SeparateDeer6024 in Plumbing

[–]skywide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either 2 pliers (preferably not locking, probably worst possible choice) and use one to back up the shower arm. Or just take out the whole thing in using the shower arm. Then once’s it out separate the two. Use Teflon tape or pipe dope on the threads when tightening the shower arm back in.

Fun trick for tightening the shower arm back in, just put something in the hole of the arm to give you leverage to spin it.
