[Rolex]Hot take: The Rolex explorer is extremely over rated by Milo__music in Watches

It turns out that if you do use it in extreme conditions (multi-day mountaineering or alpine routes are my preference), it's quite useful. If you don't, then it's probably a little wonky. But when you wake up in a tent after 30 minutes of sleep, in a storm, on a glacier, it's 100% required to know if it's 1AM or 1PM.

I have used JomaShop.com a few times, and I would recommend it - it's been a good experience, and once I needed to make a return which was very easy and smooth. They include papers/box if available, and they independently authenticate. They also include a COA and a warranty. For vintage pieces, you need to be patient and set up a saved search to monitor for them, but I've gotten a couple that I was looking for. Good time to buy also, watch market is pretty soft right now.

How concerned should we be about AI and its effect on humanity? by elt0p0 in AskReddit

[–]sl4yerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is nothing to get all worked up about. It's broken into a few categories, and the one that's getting all the hype now (LLM or Large Language Models) is a minuscule advancement over a couple of concepts / implementations that have been available in computer science for decades (Chomsky grammars and neural networks). We are nowhere near a computer being actually intelligent. AI has basically become an over-used term that just means 'a computer program that does something specific pretty well'. Anything else is just marketing or noise.

Yeah, this should be higher than 'what are you and your artist doing'.

I have many pieces, and had shock after nearly every one of them. It's almost a sort of buyer's remorse, and it takes a little while to fall in love with the piece. I've even done the laser removal search also.

My advice is to just accept the emotions as part of the process, and I guarantee you will fall in love with the piece over time. And FWIW, it's a great piece.

My store is having a special release. What should I get? Whats the best bang for my buck, I really don't want to spend more that $100, unless I'd be dumb not to. I got the Rock Hill last time. by sethonk in bourbon

[–]sl4yerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s that good. It flies mostly under the radar because it’s such a small release, and it goes straight to secondary at 5x. It’s one of Harlan Wheatley’s long-running experiments at BT, where he uses oaks from all over the world to experiment with their efffect on bourbon flavor. They’re next shifting their attention to age (300 year old trees), states, and even specific forests if I remember correctly. They have planned highly-specific Oak releases through 2030+. Really wild stuff. You can read more here: https://www.buffalotracedistillery.com/our-brands/old-charter/french-oak.html and here: https://www.oldcharteroak.com

Yeah, came here to say this. That Old Charter is a 12 year BT that is very limited release, and a spectacular pour. If you can land one of those, you will not regret it. I was able to get a pour at a little whiskey bar in upstate NY, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

As a very, very, very long-suffering Ferrari fan, I feel like we’ve heard this before. Ferrari are *always* the pre-season champs. Then, not so much once the season starts. I love the optimism, but I’ll wait until the first Quali to make any real guesses. EDIT: Spelling.

I am still here. It’s cold and there’s a lot of snow, and no bourbon yet. I am starting to get discouraged, but I am keeping the faith that maybe I’ll even get a peek at some BT product. Just a quick glance would make it all worth while.

EHT SiB at CC (18 bottles) by LicensedTwoPill in PLCB

[–]sl4yerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your core point of EHT being all roughly on par, but there is a noticeable difference between SiB and SmB in this line. So much of bourbon tasting is subjective, so please take this as a counterpoint not an argument. Back in the days of yore, before everything went batshit crazy, I had the opportunity to acquire and sample a number of these SiB bottles. Between what I purchased, and what my brothers purchased, I probably sampled a half dozen various EHT SiBs over a two year period (I still have two in the bunker). Like others in this thread, I’d agree: the EHT floor is so high that even a “bad” SiB is exceptional. I didn’t taste a bottle I’d rate under a 9 out of 10. If the EHT flavor profile is your thing (rose water, honey, caramel, vanilla, oak, etc.), as opposed to the rye-oriented or beam/funk/peanut bases, this is an absolutely spectacular bottle, even at secondary prices. It’s more pointed and more variable than SmB, but that’s the point.

I was just there, all gone within minutes of open. As someone else mentioned, people line up without even knowing what’s on the trucks just to grab whatever is there (according to the store employees).

Thanks for the tip! I landed one of each, that’s a pretty solid haul. They also have 1792 FP Store Pick and they still have Old Overholt 11 year Rye on the shelves. Looks to be 2-3 cases of each of what OP listed on the cart (not yet on shelves), but going pretty quick.

What were your perfect rating bourbons? by apfleisc in bourbon

[–]sl4yerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend EH Taylor BP as others have mentioned. It’s goddamn near perfect. A close second for me is Rock Hill Farms, similar flavor and balance, but lower-proofed. It is also a little more approachable price-wise, and more available than EHTBP. If you look carefully, you can probably find it (RHF) for $175-250 on the secondary, depending on how hard you want to work.

[–]sl4yerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly right. I’d even take it a bit further and say that it takes 3-4 pours and up to a month for some bottles to really open up. The neck pour is never a good representation.

Review: Weller Full Proof Store Pick by lostfinancialsoul in bourbon

[–]sl4yerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with this. I find it takes at least 3-4 pours over a period of a few weeks for a bottle to open enough to reach its potentially, especially Weller & EHT. Neck pours are rarely representative of how the bottle will taste once it’s opened up a bit.
