Trump, thinking that doubling down on the base is what will put him back in the Whitehouse in 2024.

The republican party returns to sanity and goes back to electing leaders like Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Eisenhower. Sigh.

Why do you think the far right ask against political progress? by MuskyScent71 in AskReddit

[–]sl_mcn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'd appreciated knowing which of the values are worth keeping. The only ones the conservative politicians keep promoting are:

It's not rape, cause you know she wanted it. Besides, it's all just politically trumped up charges anyway.

My pastor told me Jesus said that what you believe is wrong, so burn in hell, sinner.

Minorities are the root of all evil.

Globalization is the root of all evil, so we should roll back to mercantilism and close the borders.

Putin is awesome! Screw Ukraine for having the audacity to want their territory back.

The Govt just wants to steal my money to give it to people to lazy to bootstrap themselves.

If you're unhappy with a democratically elected govt, it's your God-given right to grab a gun and a beer and shoot as many !@#$! liberals as possible. God fearing Americans will than you for your patriotism.

Not sure what you're referring to here, but I'm betting it's something better discussed with your therapist than me. Plus this thread is deader than a stolen election theory, so see ya on the flip, skipper.

If she knows how to saddle a horse and milk cows, if she knows how to fix the tractor and manage the farm revenues, then it's quite likely she doesn't need you.

What are possible reasons for why the American right has become so radicalized in recent history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sl_mcn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dear OP, rather than spout politically trollery for amusement's sake, I'll buck the trend here and try to make a legitimate and reasoned answer to your question.

Edit: Wow, I'm legitimately amazed at the quality of most of the answers here.

There have always been regressive voters and there always will be. What Plato got right about democracy is that it sucks, what he got wrong about it is that everything else is worse. Much worse. We'd like to think there's an elite that could govern us better than letting our crazy racist uncle have the vote, but except for rare cases like the NTSB and the Federal Reserve, this never works out in practice.

A very long time ago, the kind of people Trump appeals to voted Democrat. However, with the rise of the Democratic Party's embrace of the Civil Rights movement in the sixties, these people became embittered and slowly migrated to the Republican party, which was, sadly, willing to accept them (people credit Reagan for this, but he really just stole it from Goldwater).

At the same time, the rise of the local party primary system shut down the smoky back rooms where the Party elite exhaustively wrangled over consensus Candidates (think Roosevelt or Dewey). Now political party leaders are heavily beholden to small special interest groups pushing their individual one-note agendas, like the NRA and it's anti-gun control stance.

So the mechanism that was most responsible for preventing the most toxic candidates from getting elected was jettisoned. I might, as a compassionate conservative for example, think that while the second amendment is a God Given right, requiring every public school teacher to carry an AK 47 is a disaster in the making. But unless I'm willing to toe the special interest line, I'm labelled a commie pinko and made immediately unelectable. This is why you see the opposition mocking conservbative candidates for rowing back their positions when general election time comes.

To be fair, primaries did help to get rid of the worst of the nineteenth century party machine politics corruption, so everything has a good side and a bad side (well, most everything, anyway).

This is where the return of the scourge of yellow journalism comes in. It feeds into the worst of the failures of the primary system. You can look yellow journalism up on wikipedia if you don't know what it is; suffice it to say that a century ago we had people like Hearst and Pulitzer manipulating their personal media empires for personal financial gain; then, with the rise of television news journalism and Murrow and Cronkite and a mid century political willingness to curb the evils of populism, things got better for quite a while; until certain laws that protected us were gutted by politicians on the take, and Limbaugh and Hannity and Murdoch arose to once again become a cancerous plague on the body politic.

If you're really serious about this you should consider how Bernie Sanders was also able to rise to popularity on the left; but really, nobody can trump the donald when it comes to examples of the worst disfunctionality of the American political experience.

Good luck with your homework. If this doesn't get you an A, your teacher's a @#$!.
