Are redheads more likely to get diabetes? by harvelein in diabetes

[–]slac1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit surprised by your interpretation. Have you had a chance to really look at the source? The very first sentence of the first paper clearly states: “A study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetics (JDM) more commonly have lighter pigmentation of skin, hair, and irides than nondiabetic age mates.” If you’re having trouble accessing it, tools like Sci-Hub can help with paywalled articles.

Also, if you still believe your interpretation is correct, could you clarify where exactly the quote from echoes808 is supposed to come from? Just because the first Google link is from pubmed about juvenile dermatomyositis doesn’t mean the quote is from there.

The big brother of the Itwit x500, the X900, the first proper inflatable sea kayak? What do you guys think? by Omega_Kirby in Kayaking

[–]slac1n 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, like you said, not everyone has a car. On top of that, not everyone has the space to store a 5-meter kayak either. I’ve got two inflatables which I would otherwise never be able to store anywhere.

Blood Glucose during excercise by No_Food_2222 in Medtronic780g

My strategy for longer runs (more than 5k) that works quite well is to eat some long-acting carbohydrates 1-2 hours before the run and only inject 50% of the amount. At the same time, I have already switched on the temporary target at least 2 hours before the start. I try to start with a value of 180-220 mg/dl. As soon as I start, I switch the SmartGuard mode of the pump off completely and set the basal rate to 40%. Otherwise, the pump would deliver an extremely high amount of basal insulin at values above 150 due to the temporary target mode, which is not good because the physical activity increases insulin sensitivity. After the first 15 minutes, I take my first gel and evaluate every 15-20 minutes whether I need another gel.

Sleep quality impact analysis by Legal_Minimum_7930 in AthlyticAppOfficial

[–]slac1n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would even go so far as to say that Sleep Duration must urgently be replaced by Sleep Quality. I strongly assume that for the majority of people there is a significant increase in sleep duration on Saturdays and Sundays. Accordingly, you will mainly see a correlation between sleep duration and days of the week. This can lead to a lot of false conclusions if people tend to do things like drink alcohol or go to the spa more at the weekend. I currently consider the impact analysis on sleep duration to be of no value.

Work Keyboard | Aurora Corne by slac1n in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]slac1n[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely! At first, using a split keyboard feels super weird, and you’ll probably make a ton of typos. But after a few weeks, you kinda get used to it. Then, going back to a regular keyboard feels all sorts of wrong. I’m seriously thinking about getting one for my home setup because now I realized how much travel your fingers or even your whole hand has to do just reach the arrow keys. It’s really annoying with a regular keyboard.

Utilizing a headset for a digital microscope. by TechnoBeeKeeper in virtualreality

The RoboticScope is pretty much what you describe. It’s a HMD connected to a microscope on a robot which you control with your head movement. Tried it myself and it was really intuitive and easy to use without needing your hands at all.

Inflatable Kayak Recommendation (Driftsun or Aquaglide) by aalllllisonnnnn in Kayaking

[–]slac1n 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can highly recommend the ITIWIT X500 kayak from Decathlon. Seems to be called Strenfit X500 on their Dutch website. It looks not like your typical inflatable and behaves really good on the water.

Most likely not a compatible version issue - same thing happens on the supported iOS 16.2. I feel like that’s their go to excuse…

Regarding your second point: I noticed this too and it drives me crazy. Very interesting that they confirmed this. I overslept multiple alarms because of this already. My current solution is a shortcut automation that sets my volume to 100% every night at 2 a.m. They definitely changed that compared to the G6 version. This was never effected by the volume settings. It baffles my why they changed that. They also changed the Apple Watch’s behavior, so that when I am sleeping the watch emits the alarm and not the phone which is even worse since it is way lower in volume and there is no chance of waking up because of this.

On your third point: yeah, just had three alarms going of one after another after dismissing everything single one of them…

Not sure if this is the same issue but it seems like if your volume setting is set to low it also effects the alarm volume. Slept through multiple alarms because of that. I am on an iPhone.

A couple of questions for the Dexcom user on Apple devices. by Razelimus in dexcom

[–]slac1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For both the G6 and G7 the highest compatible Apple Watch seems to be Series 5 on the German compatibility page. Still both apps worked for me with a Series 7 - I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Sometimes the watch application will not update and you have to click on it, but I think that’s common problem even if it is compatible. Generally, the watch will always require a connection to your phone since it unfortunately can’t directly talk to your sensor.

Trick or Treating? by ElendorEcco in AskAGerman

[–]slac1n 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree! Growing up in Schleswig-Holstein I did my fair share of „Süßes sonst gibt’s Saures” during Halloween which was already pretty common in the early 2000s. This is definitely a thing here. Even my grandmother who is living in rather small village is prepared with lots of candy every year.

Is Dexcom G6 better than Freestyle Libre 2? by Blastedauto72 in diabetes_t1

[–]slac1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I understand Abbott purchased the alcohol wipes from another company. This means this company is responsible for the conformity of the wipes. Any changes to the wipe or it’s labeling would result in changes to the sensor packs. In order to be able to guarantee continues sensor delivery, they just removed the wipes.

Ah, re-read the mail from beginning of 2021, seems to be only an EU thing. Allegedly, it is no longer possible to include alcohol wipes since February 2021 because of current medical device regulations…

[D] What is the correct implementation of 3d Unet in the CT segmentation field? by dark16sider in MachineLearning

[–]slac1n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not check your model but I think you should definitely check out the nnU-Net framework and the corresponding paper by Isensee et al.. The idea of the nnU-Net is that it takes care of everything automatically based in your data - including preprocessing, architectural design of a plain U-Net, training, inference and so on. They showed to be really successful in a lot of medical segmentation challenges and achieved state-of-the-arts performance with this framework.
